I have removed many of them, both male and female. In many cases the tang will break when you bend it back into place. And even when you clean them thoroughfully, in many cases the socket plastic is old and will break easily.
Bottom line: for the price of new connectors and sockets -about 2 bucks for a set of male-female socket and plug and 4 male and 4 female connectors- it takes less time to cut the old wires and solder new ones, using new sockets. Sorry I don't trust much in crimping; in my opinion a good soldering gives much better electrical connection and much stronger mechanical union, though I press the connector tangs over the cable for the sake of it. I could tell you the method I use not to put a wire in the wrong place, but I'm sure you can devise your own one that very probably will be the same than mine....
