Suggestions on replacing exhaust?
« on: September 02, 2005, 01:46:29 PM »
Hi:

Haven't written in a while, been too busy riding!!

Well, my #1 pipe on the original 4-4 finally cracked.  I had fixed a hole last year with JB Weld, Beer Can, and some bailing wire.  But Obviously, the steel inside is rotten.  Too bad, because the right side pipe is in good shape -- that why we only see the right side for sale....

Anyway, I have two options:

Mac 4-1 OR
Replacement Mufflers.

I like the 4-4 look, but I don't know how it will look with replacements.  I don't want it to look cheesy, so I'm asking you guys what are my options?

What companies offer original looking clamp on mufflers?  How do you like them?

Or, should I just go with the 4-1 MAC system.

Thanks,

Zeke

Well I stuck with 4-4 and got slip ons. The problem we face is that our bikes use a smaller diameter header than what is used today. I have to get adaptors made for my pipes. You can probably find something with a smaller opening though. I got slash-cut megaphones that are 24 inchs long or so. A bit shorter than stock but look very good. I will have to weld a bead around mine but was told If done right, I could polish the weld joint to shine good so it is not noticable.

hi
had a quick look at csml and david silver spares neither have any cb 650 exhausts in stock so if you want to keep 4 into 4 it looks like slip ons as for the slip ons being a biger diameter not a problem just get a peice of copper water pipe that slips over the headers that should take the diameter up to the slip ons if not put two peices on make a cut in the second peice and open it up a bit if its a bit big just file it down a bit before the final fit just smear jb weld over it you should get a good seal if you want to make sure fit a stainless steel exhaust clamp over the joint one of my exhausts has had a replacment muffler welded on it showes even with polishing its the diference in color between chrome and steel i finished up painting a half inch band over the joint in aluminium paint did the outher 3 to mach them up

merv   ;)

Tried the jb thing but it did not work. What happens is that without a solid mount the pipes flex and break the jb. Course I used jb quick but you have to mask areas to not make a mess then you have to pull the mask before the jb sets.

Guys:

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I've looked at the slip-ons on loudfastugly (yeah, out of bidness) and a few look pretty good, but are definately longer than mine.

These are only about 17" long.

What mfrs are your favorite?

Thanks,

Zeke

Try Mikes XS.

He's got a cool set of 15" Reverse Dunstalls. A set of 4 would look mighty cool.

Check JC Whitney (I know, I know...) They have different style slip-ons with adapters that go down to 1 5/8" or so.

I've made adapters out of sch40 steel pipe, cut to length then sliced long way with a hacksaw so they tighten up when you clamp 'em down.

I'd rather ride a Yamaha than eat worms.

Thanks, KG.  -- that site is nicely done.

I didn't see 15" but I did see 17" which is essentially what I have.

I have to say, that many of these sites with replacements really suck -- they don't have pics of half the stuff they sell.

I'll keep looking though.

I wonder what it would cost to get my header pipes re-chromed....

Howdy:

These 3 pc reducers are pretty cool and cheap -- looks like they are universal.

huh, I didn't know that loudfastugly went out of business. Some friends and I went there once to get parts, and the visit ended with Brian yelling at us and kicking us out of the shop. well, he kicked my friends out--by that time I was in my car, engine running, ready to make a high-speed getaway.

I think he lived in that RV parked out front.
