AGM battery - Year report -FYI
« on: November 07, 2007, 03:51:19 PM »
Another thread reminded me that its been at least a year since replaced my old acid battery with a sealed AGM unit...here is my report - applicable for a CB750 (and probably the rest).

1. Battery requires no acid - its sealed! Therefore no acid drips on my HM300 or HM341 pipes  ;D
2. Battery has never been re-charged since I got it - drop in and go.
3. Battery has never run out of juice or let me down in any way. Even now with temps in low 30`s (like this morning) I press the button and go.
4. I ride 4 miles to work (8 miles round trip) each day through slow-moving traffic mostly....so battery recharging is probably just enough but with the old acid batteries wasnt always the case.....
5. Im sure the bike is running better! (subjective I know but there you go...).
6. Easy to maintain - nothing to do!

Thats it....for $62 from Advance Auto Parts Im a satisfied customer  ;D

cheers
Andy

+1

I'll add that my cold starting is much easier.  I've had to leave my bike sitting out a week at a time since garage space is presently occupied by flooring materials.  >:(  Temps are down around freezing at night.  Even so, the battery cranks nicely come morning; and it hasn't been on a charger.  I think the AGM batteries really pay for themselves in convenience and reliability.

I have been using a Dekka battery in my "K" Z1 for about 18mths and my CB750 1976F1 for about 9mths with no problems.
They seem to hold their charge much longer and have slightly more cranking power.
Needless to say there is no chance of getting acid on my expensive pipes.
They are about twice the price of a normal battery, but IMHO worth it.

I had problems with that type of battery when I had my VFR.
My ride to work wasn't enough to replace what the starter and lights had taken out of it in the winter months.
Once it went flat that was the end of it, even after a good charging overnight it wouldn't hold it's charge and had to be replaced.

Sam I think you had a bad battery. I got an agm and have never touched it since putting it in. Oh I checked the voltage a couple times but it was always excellent and has always done good. There are more cranking amps then a regular lead acid. A regular is around 115 or so and my agm is closer to 200. That can make a huge difference. I will not go back to a regular lead acid.

it was 2 years this past august since i got mine at advance, never a problem with it going flat on me, even with a screwy regulator/rectifier.

I will get one this week. Thanks for the tips. I understand batteries are going to skyrocket due to zooming lead prices.

I have had an AGM battery in my bike for 18 months and 13,000 miles.  Not one problem with it.  I paid right around 50 bucks at Batteries Plus, at the time it was only 5 or 10 bucks more than a standard battery.

Someone needs to leave their lights on overnight to flatten it then see how long it lasts after it's been flattened.

I did that once, left my key on for weekend.  Needless to say it was FLAT.  I placed it on a battery charger for a couple of hours and the bike fired right up.  This happened last January and was during a time when there was too much snow on the ground to ride much.  I rode it twice, and even fired right up after sitting for seven weeks.  I can't tell it ever happened.

OK I tried to search for one of these batteries online at Autozone and other sites. What P# of Battery # would I need for a 1978 750K? The more I searched the more conflicting the information.

I would also like to know which part number agm battery fits for a 1971 cb750. The one that parts unlimited lists is about 1/4" too wide to fit.

Back in April '05 - Installed a Yuasa YTX14AHL-BS in my (stock) 750K4. Solid performer and no worries about acid overflow spillage. Wonder how long it will last?

The Yuasa website lists this battery for:  Honda - CB750K Four  1969-1982

I installed a Westco (Panasonic) AGM battery in my 750F in June 2001.  It is still going strong.  The one in my R100GS is a year older than that.

did the earlier 750s have a different battery, that seems to be the same p/n as the battery that was too wide? I was going to buy it off a coworker but tried to install it and it wouldnt fit.

Bobby, here is a start. The batt is expensive but keep checking on it and wait for a sale.
