Aftermarket rods??? And other Hi-Po engine Q's
« on: November 10, 2007, 06:14:34 AM »
So, who makes a set of good aftermarket rods for the CB750 that can be run alot. I remember readin' discussions that the aluminum ones are only good for draggin' cause they'll stretch if you run 'em a long time. I'm looking for something that I can run on the street. Who makes a good forged rod? Steel??? Or, how much can the stockers take? I've got a set that was shot-peened and lightened/polished a bit. What kind abuse can they take? Not looking to drop a grand on Falicons or anything.  Also not revving to the moon, though 10 pounds of boost may be in the future...

There are basically Carrillo's and Falicons. Carrillo's are even more expensive. Maybe you could find a used set.

Both are aluminum alloy. I helped replace a 750 motor that had the crankcase ventilated by a RC Gold conrod... I haven't trusted alloy rods since then. Maybe on a drag bike that runs very little and gets new parts regularly, certainly not on a hotrod street engine.
By "very little" I mean that a street bike going for an hour's ride puts more turns on the motor than a drag bike engine will do in its entire life.

Yeah, I've already decided I don't want aluminum rods.  I contacted Dynoman and it's around $850-$1000 for a set of Falicons or Carillos.  I might just keep my eyes open for a used set somewhere.  I'm also going to contact Baltimore Heat Treating and talk to them about what they can do with a stock rod.  A set of balanced stock rods that are shot peened and cryoed should be strong enough for my application.

The stock bolts are the big problem.

Yep, stay away from those aluminum rods - sell them on ebay, or polish them and put them on display in the workshop  ;)

As for the bolts, does anybody know about stronger aftermarket bolts for the stock rods?  Carrillo maybe?

Sam...APE has ARP sets for the ZX11 and FJ1200. I don't think he has them for the CB.

I tried to find my correspondence with ARP about a replacement set of 5/16" bolts for a set of RC rods but must have already erased it. Yes, they can make a set of bolts but do not have them ready made. The first set if I remember was well over $400. The time and expense of setup for 1 set is terrible. Who can afford a set of rods with bolts that expensive?! Now if Buzz can supply a set of Carrillo rods with bolts for $1000 then you'd better buy those bad boys because $1300 is probably a more realistic figure these days. Perhaps I need to add a set to my shopping list with Buzz at that price.

Yeah, he quoted me $895 for Falicons and $995 for Carillos.  Are Carillos much better?

It depends what you are going to do with the motor/ how much abuse/ at what sort of revs.

Is this going to be the 900 motor with the Rayjay turbo ?

Might very well be a 1080 motor with the rajay setup.  In a perfect world, according to calcs, a 1080 at only 4-5 lbs of boost is almost 130 hp  ;D ;D ;D  Dragman has a turbo 1080 kit that's low-compression flat tops.  Pondering the options/consequences.

The 1080 unless you find a block that is fully finned will run very warm on the street.

Let me get this right..rather than take my suggestion to simply cut down the pistons out of any of the kits, you would buy a kit that is bigger and more expensive and prone to overheating..just to get ready cut pistons.

And that you dont seem to like the price of a good set of rods, but now you are looking at a 1080 kit?

All righty..

I can't arque with 754's train of thought.....what you are talking about is very time consuming and expensive. Those old RC blocks were PITA on the street just NA. Put boost into it and see what happens.

Dragman on this forum has a 1080 turbo kit with the jugs already setup that I'm thinking of running.  Just trying to figure out if it would work on a street motor.  It's not an RC block, it's a stock block that had the air-passages between the cylinders rewelded and bored for bigger sleeves.  It's got full fins around the outside of the block.  Assuming the boost is kept to a relatively low 4-5 pounds and I run meth injection to cool it (along with an oil cooler and a big oil tank) it might be an ok street motor.  I am seriously considering the Carillo rods.  Just wish I could find a used set.  I wouldn't go as big as 1080 except I'd be getting a great deal on it.  If the 1080 is really too big I can swap out the pistons/jugs without changing the cam/rods/bottom end.  Just a thought.  If I build the bottom end strong enough for anything I can bounce around on piston choices.

Summit's got the turbo rebuild kit I need, and I've already got a ported/polished/big valve head with high lift springs and TI keepers.  Still pondering combos.

You might have to change the headas well if it has been squished for the bigger pistons.

Ah stock cylinder,, well they just cannot take it, thats why they are welded..do you know that the sleeves actually are showing between the fins if you bore a stock cylinder that big.. and that they are just not reliable..  Basically not very useful if you plan on putting any hours on it.

Insread of buying someone elses cast off parts, why not start at the bottom end and do it right for what your plan is.

If you plan on running the turbo and using it at all you will need to strengthen your bottom end.

Wether you do or not is your choice, but if you dont, you will wish you had..

What else does the bottom end need besides the rods?  I thought the stock crank was plenty strong for what I'm planning.
