What am I getting into???
« on: November 21, 2007, 09:37:38 AM »
Ok,
I've been chopping CB750s for a while now but I might be bringing one home that is too nice to chop.  I've been after my uncle for a bit to acquire this one and he's giving in (soon I hope).  It's a 1970, neck dated 11/70.  Frame 10664XX and engine 10669XX.  22,XXX miles.  Someone dropped it off at his house years ago to rebuild the carbs.  Couldn't get the parts (he's not real good with the internet) so the dude who owns it said "forget it then, I don't want it back".  It's formerly root beer brown.  Tank is original but very sun faded and has a dent on the left.  It's got the correct brown headlight bucket/mounting ears.  It's got a set of HM300 pipes that look like the large diffusers and I think the fat clamps.  No rust or dents that I can see, just covered in oil from a leaking sprocket seal.  I think they'll polish very nicely.  It's got a vetter fairing and a sissybar/luggage rack that have to go.  The seat doesn't have any rips, can't see the pan because the key is missing.  Also, the top triple tree is really weird looking.  The gauge mount is one piece with the tree and it's huge.  Is that a '70 thing?

Anyway, what am I getting myself into here?  I've always wanted a nice stocker to park next to my chops for a before/after kinda deal.  Also, something reliable/comfy to ride.  I think this might be the one.  What other parts should it have and how do I tell if it's got 'em?  I know it's missing the sidecovers.  The fenders are decent, no dents, just dirty.  Hasn't run in atleast 10 years.

the top tree is a 69-71 thing I believe. there are several guys on here that can give you every last detail but i am not one of them. I do agree that it would be a sin to chop it.

69 -72 actually..but early 69 is a different part #

So 71? and 72 have steel case instruments without bottom mount studs.. 71 must have indicator lights in them..

Also, did the K1s get a lock for the seat or did that come with the K2?  I know the K0 just had a latch, no lock.  Maybe you can get under that seat.

You probably already know this but you might be able to find the key on feeBay? The key code is on the face of the lock - type it in the search engine, check 'search item title and description' and maybe check the boxes to search the feeBay stores too and (maybe) voila!

There are several sellers offering them that come and go - I found mine this way and picked up 3 of them for like $15.  :)

Also, is that an Amen Savior frame in your avatar?  maaaaan I want either one of those or the Santee swing arm frame REAL bad for my next project.  :P

Yeah, that's a savior frame in my avatar.  I'm currently ridin' a '72 motor in that frame.  I got a wicked set of invaders, 21/16, that are going on this winter along with a girder front end.

I;m gonna snap some pics of the K0 tomorrow morning and get 'em posted.  She looks pretty sad with a cracked vetter fairing and a tall sissybar/luggage rack but under all that is a nice stocker waiting to be rode again.

It an Amen.. I did 800 mile days on mie or more.. I made bag mounts for it! But the Santee would be more comfy (swingarm one)

I would love to do up a Amen rigid just for looks.

My buddy 1080 that lurks on here has a Savior 836cc, his brother has a Kawi 750 Saviour.. that has done a 10 sec 1/4 mile.. not kidding on that. They had theirs since the 80,s.. I got rid of mine in the 80's.. red bike we posted a pic of a while back..

Nice frames..

Hey there JL, nice find yes the first three years had what some call the unicorn on the triple tree with having the chrome rings with a screw in between the tach and speedo they are sought after a good bit I sold one to a guy in france and one here in the states. big bucks for what they are. Now on your other  ride the chopper, I built one but used a chopped stock frame with coffin tank and a custom rear harley fender, front fender off a 440 kawi all painted sunburst yellow(one of a kind).      But my baby is my 73k/70/836 engine. but it is so cool to jump  on either one of them and go for a blast such a big contrast in rides. Biulding a cafe now out of a 73 750. good luck with your new perchase Craig in Maine. 30+ year collector of the old seven five ohs

PS you will get all the help you will need in here GREAT BUNCH
seven fifty four ever its not the destination its the journey Ive been collecting these old dinasours for 33 years . they are quite an ICON

Nice frames..

very kewl!!  hard tails look rad but I already kinda have back issues so I am thinking some kind of suspension on back would be wise. Are all of those old Santee and Amen frames CB750 only?  just wondering as I don't think I have ever seen a 500/550 one. I wish I would have had the money for this Santee frame, as it looked like a real nice original:

I have been looking at some of the last few issues of 'The Horse' and have seen several real nice Honda choppers & bobbers - old school, so I think I am kinda hooked on them now!..  . . he he. That's a pretty cool magazine and I like that they actually have the occasional woman riding bikes instead of just draped all over them (though, there are plenty of those too. . . ::)    lol   )

Alright got a few pics.  It's a bit dark, but you can see how easily the dirt wipes away from the pipes and the gauges.

She deserves to be restored to atleast a decent rider.  I definitely need sidecovers, the PO put on those JC Whitney black ones after he lost one on the road.  Anyone got a set of Candy Garnet Brown sidecovers???

BTW, for choppers with suspension check this one out:

I didn't build the frame, but this is my winter project.  Getting a turbo SOHC engine.  It's a HD saft tail rear section on a monstrous custom frame.  Rake's only 38 degrees and the frame is still all of 9 feet long.  +8 sporty front end, fatboy rear wheel, etc.  Needs a bigger tank, big oil tank, and big electric box...

You will get high quality pattern sidecovers, in black so you can paint them, from www.davidsilverspares.co.uk
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Does anyone sell a close approximation of "Candy Garnet Brown" paint?  I'm going to have to repaint the tank and the sidecovers.  I think I'll buy them from davidsilverspares which means they'll come black.  Also, my tank has a black decal on the chrome trim at the bottom of the tank, plus the gold decals above the emblems.  Who sells those decals?  Are the tank badges removeable/reinstallable?  What about the chrome?

JLeather, Here's a start:

Candy Garnet Brown paint:
http://www.vintagehondapaint.com/

OE Honda Gas tank molding (set) 1-right side & 1 left-side with the black stripe:
http://www.hondanuts.com/cb750.html

Optional miscellaneous decals:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB750-K1-K2-warning-service-label-set_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35593QQihZ004QQitemZ140163541887QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Gas Tank decals: Usually available from the "ReproDecal" vendor listed above.

Tank badges are removable and can be reinstalled as originally designed, each emblem has two mounting posts.

I have an extra set (New-In-Package) of the gold/black tank decals - PM if interested

Hmm, that paint kit isn't too bad.  Is it really something I can do myself or should I leave that one up to a professional?  I can use the downdraft booth at my Dad's work.

So, the chrome/black tank molding I can remove and throw away and buy completely new ones after I paint the tank?

Also, the Hondanuts site lists K0 as ending mid 1970 with the 1044XX number.  Does that mean mine's not actually a K0 even though it's a '70?  It's got the 2-hole rear fender and 2-hole taillight as well as the "unicorn" gauge holder.  If it's not a K0 it will have different sidecovers.

It's a K1.  The gauges and color are K1 items.

Ah, well I guess that makes it a bit cheaper to Resto it.  Is it supposed to have the ducktail seat, or is the flat one on it correct?  What's an average price on a nicely restored (not museum quality or anything) K1?  What's it worth in it's current state?

Flat seat is correct.  A good, well-maintained, low mile K1 sold on eBay for right around 4K a month or two ago.  Current state is hard to say.

I'm not a painter so I can't comment on the level of expertise required on the paint kits. They have produced very good results for the other members. See this thread:

The old/new tank moldings are a quick swap out as the tank tabs hold them in place.
