It must be more than just a spy satellite. But your right, they try to set the rules, but don't live by the same ones. It must be pretty big tho, if they figure they can shoot it out of the sky??

But don't blame the American people, we can't control our government either. >:( >:(  We just supposely elect them. ::)

I love that line from V for Vendetta- "People shouldn't be afraid of their governments.  Governments should be afraid of their people."

...but the US is just too big for us to have one massive riot.  Shame.

George W hasn't hit it yet!! Perhaps another embarassing moment?! I'd like to think hydrazine or any other rocket fuel would burn up during reentry?! The space shuttle sure sizzled didn't it!

Gerry, they recon the shuttle broke up during re-entry but a lot of large pieces managed to make land fall.

This thing is going to be destroyed as it has toxic fuel on board.

Another reason they want it destroyed is so it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

That's all according to what we are hearing from TV in the UK.

hmmm.

I don't think it's quite the same thing....

For starters, China's weather satellite was merely old, and not about to deorbit and rain debris on Peking.

They scattered their satellite as an effing test of an effing weapon - to send a message(we can do yours too).
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/23/world/asia/23cnd-china.html?_r=1&hp&ex=1169614800&en=d9317a9a60f6aebb&ei=5094&partner=homepage&oref=slogin

Most of the thousands of little and not-so-little bits are still in nice stable orbits, and will remain so for some time. right along with the rest of everyone else's satellites. it's getting busy up there.
http://www.space.com/news/070202_china_spacedebris.html

On the other hand, our wonder of modern science is about to fall out of the sky. Wanna play catch with a nuclear reactor? might be better if we blow the dam thing to bits before it comes down, right?

Remember Skylab? That thing came down in one piece and rained crap on Perth. Nice big chunks.

whatever.

I think they just want to prove they can do it. What good is having weapons if you can't prove to everyone else they work.
When I was kid the US and the Ruskies were setting off A bombs like bottle rockets. So, now the Earth poisoned and my generation is the first who were born with Strontium 90 in our bones.

It will be very cool.  Remember the "star wars" missile defense system from the '80s?  Made the whole "arms race" obsolete instantaneously.  Sure is nice not having to live with that "cold war" crap.  Remember the air-raid drills in school?   Fallout shelters?

I was happy to see those stupid, paranoid movies about the human race getting blown to bits in a nuclear holocaust disappear.  Remember "Late, Great Planet Earth"?  Remember the term "Nuclear Winter"?  Those movies gave me nightmares when I was a kid.  Too bad those stupid movies have been replaced by paranoid apocalyptic visions of global warming and conspiracy theories about 9/11.

That scary, alarmist apocalyptic stuff really fills the seats, huh?  What makes people so sure that governments and corporations want nothing more than to destroy the planet and the human race?

Aw, come on, Bob.  What could be better than pumping lots of money into the economy by hiring some of the smartest people in the world to shoot off rockets and stuff?  We could certainly waste the money less productively.  Maybe we'll even learn something in the process.
