Wine Drinkers???
« on: March 06, 2008, 03:57:00 AM »
My wife brought a few bottles we'd not seen before back from a recent trip to MD.  We opened one about a week ago and it just blew us away.  It was a bit pricey for us but DAMN it was good.  Anyone heard of Spelletich Cellars?  We had their '03 Zin and we've not yet opened the '03 Bodog but I'm hoping it's as good.  This Zin almost reminded me of a very light port.  Much more complex than most I've had before.  We've checked all of the wine stores in town and distributors in VA don't carry it so we have to go back to MD to pick up another bottle or 2 and put them in the basement with the "special occasion" bottles.  I think one guy said they only produce about 4,100 cases / year.  Just thought I'd see if anyone else has stumbled upon this little winery.

Not really limited except that they don't make much ;D

Here's their web page.  The place we got it from was several $$ cheaper than ordering direct so I'd say ask around if you're interested.  If you're near Thurmont, MD, I do know a place...

Now that I've gotten older, its hard to imagine how I actually drank Boones Farm in my younger days.
 DG

No joke.  We used to pair a lightly aged Boones Farm with a complementary MD20/20 and a double cheeseburger.  Very delicate with a strong nose and lingering finish ;D

My wife loves Linganore, especially the sangria.  Spelletich is actualy a Napa valley winery (she just happened to find it in a MD liquor store) which is why I was so surprised.  I've had dozens of Zins from Napa and none came anywhere close to this.

Anyone ever heard Lewis Black's book on tape?  He talks about Boone's Farm.  Something along the lines of:

"We left for the concert after a strict diet of acid and Boone's Farm Apple Wine.  If you've never had the quality of nausea brought on by a bottle of Boone's Farm Apple Wine, you're in for a real treat."  ;D

Fond memories of Boones Farm Wild Mountain (Blueberry?).  I came home one night, after a bottle of that stuff and proceeded to get sick.  My Dad took great pleasure in my agony.

Nowadays, I prefer bubbles in my wine.  And none of the local wineries here in VA or MD make it.

Maybe they carry it in NH Andy. Or you can order it and for pick it up. When in Boston, I take a quick side trip up to NH. Somewher in my family tree there must have been either smugglers or pirates. ;D

Didn't Boone's Farm have a TV ad with a granny on a bike?

We like the wines from the Golan Heights winery, and Dalton.  My wife's favorite wines though are Cardovas from Spain.  She thinks the Rioja is the best kosher drinking wine (quite dry) that she's ever had, and will drink it with any kind of meal.

Never drank Mad Dog (Mogen David) even as a partying kid.  That stuff is cough syrup!

Sorry can't drink the stuff, I worked with a guy who had to drink it, I would wait till he came in extra grouchy the next morning and bust his chops by asking him how many boxes he drank last night. Then i would print little pictures of wine boxes from the computer and tape the up in places where he would eventually find them.
I farted and made my son cry.

I'm probably going to get a grilling for this post, ;D ;D ;D
but I can't help but chuckle reading about everyones' wine experience 8)
I remember my first encounter with wine. (Probably shouldn't say this ::)) but back in the early 70s my buddy and I would ride around in the little town we lived in drinking Strawberry Hill while on acid, passing the bottle back and forth between us, all the time on my new, first generation CB750 Super Sport. :-[ :-[ :-[ Man, the things I used to do; it's amazing I've lived to see 54 y/o. :o :o
Now to jump ahead many years. I've been in the retail wine business for over 25 years.
Needless to say, Boone's Farm is not on my favorites list. ;D ;D
Cvillechopper, I'm not familiar with the winery you posted about but I'll keep my eyes open for it. Some of the California Zins tend to be high in alcohol (somewhat late harvest in style); and they can come across as a port. For a similiar style check out Rombauer's Napa Valley Zin. Here in the Memphis market it sells for around $28.
Time to stop rambling; But if anyone has a wine question or needs a recommendation, feel free to ask, either in this thread or via PM, or email.
 And remember..................................
I'm a consumer too. I take pride in locating and recommending wines that drink a lot more expensive than they really are.
Believe me, I'm going to be asking a thousand questions regarding sohc4's, so don't hesitate to ask me about wine.
I know; I know. It's a dirty job but someone has to do it, right?
 CHEERS!
Jim

Well this is a Cidery Wine... It needs to age a minimum of 8 weeks, but is best after about 4 months.  It sits at about 10%ABV and will knock people out as if it is much stronger.  This batch was only a 1 Gallon test.  I have 6 gallons more that are about 1-2 weeks away from bottling.  I am just waiting for them to clear.  It also is good both carbonated and non-carbonated.
