Today went to MRiecks place and saw my beautiful ported head...great job Mike!







I prepped and then Mike painted it black...











Installed the valve oil seals...





then hardened Vesrah valves with Kibblewite springs





Seating the valves Mike-style..



Discovered the 350 rings for my Wisco 812cc pistons wont fit - the top ring needs to be 1.2 (not 1.0 that comes in the 350 kit)...





Cleaned the engine surface...





Getting closer....

 Actually the top ring needs to be 1.2mm as Andy said. The CB350 rings 1.5mm.  I thought the pistons were old Action Fours and, as Andy discovered,  they are old 64mm Wiseco's. Rings are 1.2, 1.2 2.8....basically an XC ring pack EXCEPT for the top ring (XC pack has a 1mm top ring). So...a call to Total Seal is in the books for Monday.

thanks for all the comments! As usual this wouldnt be possible without Mike Rieck - its like going to CB750 engine-building school when visiting Mike - you always learn something!

I've been there once and learned that.  ;D

As for the ring, I was going to suggest calling total seal and seeing what they had to offer. Then I saw that Mike already has that in mind.  ;)

Progress today! Mike did a great job and sorted out the pistons, getting them recut to take the ring set then sorting out a troublesome spacer issue as well. With that done he successfully used the spiral locks on the pins and then single-handedly  put the cylinder block on...



Then it was adding some copper to the Cometic gasket..



Then head went on..



And torquing down the bolts according to manual specs...doing it increments..7 ft lb then 15 ft lb...



And retorque after an overnight sitting...

Next time - cam timing and then cam cover on and home for install..getting close!!

That motor looks great.  I had deja-vu from that picture of you torquing the cylinder head.  I just did the same thing on saturday.  Look to see which one is next and torque - repeat.  I can't wait to see that motor in the frame.

Its a Megacycle cam Art but I forget the specs. Ill check this coming weekend when we set the cam timing. Basically Im going for more mid range power without sacrificing low end.

So today was the final stage of the build - sorry no photos as I forgot my camera  - anyway it was timing the cam...a Megacycle cam - fitting the 125-65 specs. Mike set up the timing apparatus - basically a big wheel attached to the rotor that had degree markings and "exhaust close" and other such words marked on it. He then turned the crank and using some fancy gauge timed the intake and exhaust sides using the ADJUSTABLE cam sprocket to get the best lift and duration settings. Really impressive stuff to watch and his attention to detail is very impressive. Basically he got the intake and exhaust to near match at around 105.25 or so. At the end of all this hard work the specs on the cam matched pretty well with the ones in the catalogue!! 125-65, 105, etc etc...and with this stage 2 port job (which looks amazing!!) the dyno run will tell all ;)....

Getting very excited at the prospect of running this engine afterall this work...

Final thing to do - put alternator cover and gear cover back on, cam cover on and then....take home and install....since I need to arrange a helper and car this will be anytime in the next 2 weeks....

Im not to sure myself Art but you are probably right that its valve related. Maybe Mike will chime in an set us right. There is even a stage 4!

Finished the engine last night and buttoned up the cam cover, alternator cover and gear cover. The neutral wire split in two so that needed to be soldered then heat shrink tubing to seal. All done!!! Wooohooo. Now just to arrange pick up and install ;). The top looks great with the black fins and polished head but the bottom half though painted a few thousand miles ago is looking a little worn...but thats ok this is not a garage queen but will be a useable road racer  ;D

Of course when I said I was finished Mike comes over to add a hex bolt to the tach seal hole and gave me a good telling off for trying to fit the new tach seal in without removing the old one...it looked to me as though it wasnt there but there you go...easy mistake to make ;).

Big thanks to Mike for his continuing patience and superb attention to detail. Really is very impressive and you couldnt ask for a better mentor/engine builder/SOHC expert helping you. More updates when its back in the frame and fired up then followed by a dyno run to see what it can do....

Not speaking for Mike but my take on his valve jobs (Mike, slap me if I'm wrong). I have a III and a IV.

Stage I - standard valve job
Stage II - standard valve job with porting and maybe KPM guides and springs
Stage III - 33.5mm KPM Black Diamond stainless intake, 28mm stock size stainless exhaust, KPM guides, springs & Titanium retainers with serious porting
Stage IV (also referred to as a Serious MoFo) - Lighter weight valve train. 34mm stainless Kibblewhite (KPM) intake, 28mm stainless exhaust both with 5mm stems vs 6.5mm on all above, KPM guides, Titanium retainers & springs (narrower than stock), and the best port job money can buy. It does take some serious cash for this option if you really want the best but you get what you pay for.

Somewhere along the road he has the head shaved but I'm not sure at which stage or if it's as needed.   
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

So it has come to this...the day before starting the 810cc K2...it has been a long 6 months since dropping the engine off with Mike R when it was 20F followed by many follow up visits when time allowed.....and yesterday thank to Chris (with car) I got the K2 engine from MikeR and what a difference from when we dropped it off in 20F cold...it was 84F and humid! I was riding back home and Chris was in the car....we got back to my garage and installed the engine in the frame....followed by celebratory beers ;)

Spent today rebuilding the K2 and by 3.30pm it was finished! Now after adding a quart of oil to the head and leaving it on the sidestand tomorrow is the real test - starting it for the first time...

Here is how it looks as of this afternoon...







so that makes 2 CB750s ready for a summer of riding...check out the new K0/K1 bars on the K4....soooooo comfy!

Bike runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Vroooooooooooom!!!!!!!

Sunday morning and go out to the garage under heavy skies....add 2 quarts to the oil tank to join the other quart I had added to the head yesterday.

Using my new Honda key switch (thanks Phactory (Phil) - much better quality than those cheapo Emgo switches) I turned on the K2 to discover it was blowing fuses and the rear turn signals didnt blink and K0 tailight was staying on all the time. I had changed the tail light over the winter so checked that out...one issue the green/yellow wire and green wire were mixed up...sorted...blinkers now blink....tailight still on...mmm....ah yes rear brake pedal switch was too tight...adjusted that and now very sensitive to rear pedal...nice...

Ok moment of truth...turn the starter over with kill switch off...then...kill switch on...fires up almost instantly! Takes 1-2 secs for oil pressure to kick up to 70psi.  Very little choke needed (running rich with those 120 mains most likely - check Denso plugs in the future)....idles a little off but with throttle on nice and smooth...all 4 pipes are hot.....but a ticking from the front #1? Ah stupid me forgot to tighten the plug cap to the plug...all better...ready to ride...but its raining all day today...will need to wait...but the hard part is done...and those HM300s sound amazing!! Its going to be a fun bike to ride. Crisp throttle response and a very smooth clutch (bottom end previously rebuilt). No smoking from exhaust or anywhere else...no leaking carbs...all clean and ready to go.

Test ride report to follow sometime this week...

Well before the BIG storm came I went for a quick test ride - 2.5 miles  - all under 4000rpm...first problem...no rear brake  :o. Ok not a huge problem and still managed to get a feel for the engine...needs a carb synch but it is smooth as butter  ;D No major surprises yet but feels good so far.....looking forward to more...nice crispy throttle response.

In the meantime...rear brake...removed wheel and checked pads - look very glazed and so sanded them down...reinstalled...no difference...even at max adjustment no braking action....look at the pics - see anything wrong (aside from needing more adjustment) with the position of the arm? Or anything else? The screwdriver tip indicates the position of the wear indicator...pads looked pretty worn - could it be as simple as that?







Any thoughts?

Jerry - as soon as this weather clears its break in time and carb synch and then Dyno ;) . First on my list for sure.....and at the same time getting the K4 road tested after all the work been done on that...
