Harley VS. Honda. Bike History anyone?
« on: August 11, 2005, 11:46:28 AM »
Here's a discussion that was started a few days ago on the Tech Forum ("What's wrong with this picture?" about changing tires). It started out with a few snyde remarks about Harleys (ok, I made 'em!), but has led to a very satisfying conversation about Bike History.
What are your favorite Bikes? Do you have photos of them that we could see?
I, as many of you might be, am partial to Hondas...I've loved them since I was about 7.a neighbor kid had a Cub about that time...the first bike I ever rode was a Dream, with those nice plastic fenders, and all that nice squareness (I will own one someday, so help me!)...I loved how the guys in the ads all wore Chinos and Madras shirts, and more importantly, how they all seemed to have a cute chick on the back with a Miniskirt and Go Go Boots.
Contrary to my tirade on the other forum, I do like Old Harleys and Indians, and any other old Classic. I do hold exception to the newer breed of Harleys though (Except V-Rods, which have a Porche engine)..I think they're crude. The engines shake and vibrate, and until recently, they leaked oil.  Until the Evo engine, Harley was pretty much using technology that they've used for 100 years. Given the choice, I would much rather have a VTX for around half the price of a Harley.. Oh, and they're incredibly expensive. A friend of mine bought Shadows for both he and his wife, and a Box trailer to haul them in, for about the price of the Harley that he originally set out to buy.
That's the brilliance of Honda...they've reinvented the Motorcycle over and over, not doing much copying on the way. and it all is mechanically outstanding...and they've maintained a reasonable price point.
So, if Superman and Mighty Mouse got in a fight, who would win? Any Takers?

OK Honda wins every time, but can I correct you on a few points without you thinking bad of me?
Talk about copying, Just take a look at the late Fiftys early Dreams/Benlys then take a look at a Fiftys NSU.
The deep valenced Fenders/mud guards on the Benlys (Dreams in the States) where steel not plastic.
The 50 Cub  and C200 90 had plastic, but who gives a sh1t Honda win every time in my book as well.

So Dude, What is it that makes A Honda Just a Honda, and a Harley a Harley, and why the competition? My God, there are places I'm almost afraid to go with a Honda.. Oh, good retort on the Harley forum.
I just think Hondas have always been refined machines, and by copying, I guess I meant that mechanically, Honda has been a trailblazer.
Anybody got anything about older bikes?
I really did think those fenders were plastic..I've seen Dreams since and never questioned my memory...I was 11 when I rode it!

The '69 CB750 turned 35 last year and was inducted as a full antique by The AMCA (http://www.antiquemotorcycle.org/FlashFrDr/NewFrpage/fr_door.html).  I got involved with them a few years ago, and The Indian 4 club (whos meet is going on this weekend in Tiffin OH) about a year ago, I think because of my interest in historical things, but also, because the people are great..much like the people on this forum..My bikes got 21 years left 'till it's 56..it could make it..
I enjoy the jousting too, but some people take it really seriously though. I have a friend who bought a brand new Shadow, only because he couldn't afford a Harley. The original seat said Honda on the back, so he put black electricians tape over it until he replaced the seat...
What is it that makes a classic? I knew the first time I saw a CB750, that I would own one..I can see having a string of bikes..cb 750, 400, 500, 350, Dream, an original CUB...What is it that makes an Indian Cheif or a knuckle head (my favorite) or an Excelcior classics? Some are classic only for their looks, some mechanically.
You don't find people collecting say rare Suzukis of the '60s and early '70s...you see people covet Yamaha 650's more than others in that line...the Early Kawasakis were a ground breaking design, but not many others...why are so many Hondas Collected, or Harleys for that matter?

Ces,

I think a bike becomes collectable and a classic when ppl start paying silly money to get their hands on them.
Take the old C92 and CB92. Everybody wants CB92s (very silly money) not as collectable the C92s are quite cheap.
I am in the process of building a CB92 but if you buy the parts that where common to both bikes you get them for a lot less.

Sour grapes. I can afford a Harley, and I like them, but I believe they are simply overpriced. I don't need any other reason.

There is a proverb in Spain that says "everything that is not imitation is dire plagiarism". If you would be a johnny-come-lately into a well established market and you would like to penetrate into it, would you risk with a totally new design or would you offer whatever the people like? Once you are established it's time to innovate and risk, because as the indian proverb goes, "only the stupid check the river's depth with both feet".

Hope to hear from you soonest.

Its about technical innovation.

Harley riders (new) can puff up thier chest and say "Its a Harley!" all they want. I just have to laugh!

That just means you overpaid for an inferior product.

Is a Harley better technologically? Construction? Quality? Performance?

NO. NO. NO. NO on all counts.

Harley riders feel free to get pissed, you just will not win an argument on merit. There are bikes out there that do exactly the same thing as Harleys that are flat better across the board.

So, I've said it before: Half the performance at twice the price.

Buy into the "image" all you want, its just that, an Image.

There was a BMW commercial here in Spain a couple of years back. The only thing that it showed was the left arm of a driver stretching out of the window, going up and down as flying (probably you have done it some time, maybe as a passenger), in different sceneries and with a little hint of goosebumps. The car was'nt rolling at high speed and was never showed, not even the emblem. At the end, the emblem and a simple question: Do you like driving?

They hit the bull's eye. They didn't need to show the car; everybody knows a BMW. What they were selling was a lifestyle, like if BMW says that you if you like driving you gotta have a BMW. Is it true?

Since then, you better don't stretch your arm or people will think you are a poor man that can afford a BMW -really-. #$%*! Can't I enjoy my car or stretch my arm just because BMW says so?
