well, it is over 2 liter so there is a possibility it could do it, when you hit the nitrous button  ;)

Having owned a Hellcat, and messed with 10 or so other models including 3 HiPo Merch 120, 240 R conversions I have never seen those type of numbers.  That includes a S&S 124 that was blown.  Just wanted to see what he was doing to get those numbers.  The Merch engines on the Feds got a bad wrap due to most owners not following the break in instructions.  Damn good engine once broken in properly.  FUN BIKES!

A local guy make 155 or more carbed  2 L or smaller with heads of his design...his blown motors are 200 or better..178. On that bike seems high, but 140 is not unheard of..
The 155 hp carbed one is a 200 mph bike, it runs at Bonneville..

Would love to know how he got 178HP out of the Merch engine?
He did an absolute ton of port flow testing with different configurations, and specified his own cam grind. The intakes are reshaped, and sport epoxy floors. He did mention that PipeMax, and engine analyzer gave him very repeatable results, each time the engine was reconfigured. As a consequence, he built the engine in virtual form, the last two times. The last reconfiguration gained a whopping 2hp, but slightly more torque.

B.

Yes, i doubt the 178HP as well...
Sorry I don't have better tech info to underscore how much development has gone into it, but each time it was re-engineered, and he told me the details, I had more trouble remembering the timeline. Somehere around the third, or fourth time, it all turned to soup in my head.

Will see if there's an older dyno sheet in one of the computers.

Best,
B.

Sixgunsrattlesnake,

here are a couple more.

bgfootball67, Retro Rocket,

Here's a little about the specification, and it looks like the cam isn't a custom bit. What's more, I was off on the displacement. All of the unexpected power must come from the extra 3 cubic inches.

"124cuin (4.25 bore x 4.375),w/approx 190rwhp sae (previously 176) on pump gas.
Custom titanium valves(2.2in/1.7ex), Super D carb, Wood w75 cam, S&S aluminum rods,
custom 12.5-1 Ross pistons, custom exhaust, custom 3" primary, S&S Baisley intake, etc."

Best,
B.

Sorry Slow but I still don't believe those HP numbers mate. Since we started this conversation I have been reading up on big HP Harleys and most if not all I came across running close to those HP numbers were running high comp Alcohol engines or were running superchargers or turbo's in big money engines and most were track bikes........

Here's a quote from a 62 year old guy on a Harley forum discussing someone bragging about getting 200HP out of a street ridden Harley...

"I have GPE 154 CI and it was supposed to make over 200hp and the best dyno pull its ever done was 177, and thats on Race gas with 2inch primary exahust tubes feeling into a 4 inch straight collector. And no its not a street motor, so anyone saying they are making 200 on a street Harley is on the crack"

I don't know a great deal about Harley engines but one thing I do know is that it takes sh1t loads of money to even come close to making that much HP on a Harley, lots more to make it reliable, daily ridden, I doubt it.  I have been listening to guys brag about their big HP cars and bikes for years, even had a guy tell me of his huge HP engine in his car, when i asked how her came to the numbers he said he had added up the manufacturers projected "improved" HP numbers like, air cleaner 5HP, exhaust 15 hp, computer 20HP, and so on, he added all these parts proclaimed hp improvements together to come up with an astronomical HP number that was completely stupid and not even close to what he actually had, we all got a good laugh out of that one... ;D

I talked to a buddy that has built 175 + hp Harleys, and he had his doubts.. Furthermore he knows at least one of the owners Of Confederate, and the fellow that split off from there and went on his own...
But hey show us a dyno chart and we will look at that..

Gentlemen,

I have made the mistake of doubting my brother's word a few times. Each time, to my own embarrassment. It's funny that you say huge money, but he was a professional racing engine builder for years, and also built some of Don Proudfoot's best custom Titans. As such, it's his time that others paid huge money for, and this engine has swallowed, literally, hundreds of hours of his time, and ample perseverance. This particular engine has been under development for a long time, it's not simply thrown together because a manufacturer has claimed gains. As I mentioned to you guys previously, This has been a long evolution. Not every step showed gains. The last one did, and fair ones, at that. None the less, I totally understand that you feel dyno sheets are the proof of the pudding, but many of us know that there are a lot of exaggerated dyno numbers, as well. Still, it would establish a better basis for conversation, and I totally get that.

Please don't confuse my brother, a man for whom, especially in this arena, I have tremendous respect, with some twat whose understanding of the internal combustion process is limited to adding aftermarket parts manufacturers claims; it's a bit insulting.

Lastly, allow me to address one point. WHO THE #$%* SAID HE RIDES IT DAILY??? This is a racing machine, dressed up as a road bike!!! Even in earlier iterations, it won plenty of dyno drags.

Anyhoo, if he blesses me with a dyno sheet, I'll most happily share it with you guys. Personally, I think the damn thing would be awesome anywhere over the 176HP it was at, last time around.

Best,
B.

These are from last time around, the 176 HP rendition I mentioned to you. The difference, between the two, is in the exhaust systems used. The first one used a 2"-2 1/8"-2 1/4" system, where the second one utilizes a 2"-2 3/8" set-up. Each has the first step @ approx 9" from the port.

The next dyno run won't be until next fall. He lives in Phoenix,  AZ, where ambient exceeded 120^F, last weekend. He said there's no point, as the air correction factor will completely  f u c k  u p  the readings.

Best,
B.
