Thinking of doing some paint touch up on engine...
« on: June 10, 2008, 09:23:04 PM »
Greetings fellow SOHC'ers!

I've searched and searched, read quite a bit about painting the engine, which paints are good, how to cure it etc. BUT, I don't have the time, or the patience to take out the engine for a full repaint.

SO is painting areas doable without repainting the WHOLE thing? Can I expect the paint to last for 5+ years? I'm thinking of doing some touch up work on the points cover, cylinder head and crankcase cover. I degreased the thing, and spent hours on it getting gunk out thats been there for probably more then 20 years  and heres an after photo:

I bought Dupli-color Aluminum Engine Enamel, Dupli-color Etching Primer, a heat gun and Kerosene (I heard that is used to get any grime/grease off without leaving any residue)

I don't really have a plan other then this:

Scrape off any paint that is already flaking, wash specific areas off with kerosene, spray on the etching primer, spray on the aluminum, then heat it with heat gun.

But I still have a lot of questions considering my scenario:

So what are the specifics for getting a solid cure if I'm not painting a base metal-complete engine?
How long should I let the etching primer dry?
Do I even need the etching primer if it isn't all base metal?
Can I just spray the aluminum enamel right over areas already painted with the old enamel and expect it to cure properly?

And my last question: Is touching up parts without doing a complete repaint even a good idea!?  :P

Thanks for any help, my bike is really coming along good!

;D I have done it successfully, but it takes a lot of tape and news paper to mask off each side.

It works to a point.......good luck 8)

^ A very interesting read, how long has it been painted? What was the specific procedure you did?

A year now. still look good.

High heat "aluminum color" on the motor and high gloss black tremclad on the frame bits.

Just get it clean, dry it off and have at er.

Dave,

Are you sure Kerosene won't leave residue?  I always thought it was what our bretheren across the pond call parrafin - which I believe leaves a waxy residue.  If I am incorrect, nevermind - if I am correct, use acetone instead!

Best of luck, and keep us in pictures!

I don't remember where I read it, actually you know what, I think you're right. It was kerosene that is to be used to clean the chain! Not the engine...So maybe I will use acetone, I got a bottle of that at home anyway.

To seaweb11: Did you use a heat gun on the engine in the areas you resprayed? How long does it need to be heated?

I agree it would be easier to take the crank case and the points covers off and paint them individually, but they are STUCK on there, I even bought a manual impact driver and it doesn't help (I'm probably not hitting it hard enough) I'll keep trying though  ;)

Once your done start it and run it = heat  ;D

P.S. Acetone and plastic/rubber don't mix well!
Varsol is my cleaner of choice.

Update!

Well the crank case cover screws came off with the impact driver, but the crankcase didn't seem to budge...I wonder why!? Oh, maybe cause there was a volcanic eruption of mud and ash inside:

Anyway, next is this coil thing, I can't imagine its suppose to be that greasy and rusty, I think the gasket is in pretty poor shape. How can I go about cleaning this now? I cant imagine spraying it down with engine degreaser and a blast of water would be very good for it, unless I be certain I blow it out with an air gun...Seaweb you mentioned varsol, is that a good choice for this coil??

The "coilthing"doesn't look too bad imo.

The crankcase covers and statorcover and pointscover are aluminium. You can just polish those.

I just finished painting my crankcases, it came out pretty good. I didn't have them blasted, I just degreased, used lots of scotchbrite to sand of the loose stuff, and degreased again with acetone.
I then sprayed it with 2 component engine paint. I used a fine spraygun.

I hope you can see the picture.....

This is a big picture, so you"ll have to download:

Thanks for the tip. I think I'm gonna go ahead and de-rust that coil bearing/wheel with some rust remover. Gonna try painting the crank case cover today and heat treat it with a heat gun. I don't know where I'm gonna set it safely and blow it with 500+ degrees of heat...Maybe on an outside grill  :D   Any ideas where else?
