Tholey's Day 2 bike find/ project!
« on: May 06, 2008, 06:48:55 PM »
I am very excited to post about this bike.  It is a 1972 with a full day 2 treatment.  By day 2, I mean the bike is not original as the day the owner bought it, but rather it has all of the correct mods of the era.

I bought it from a heck of a nice fellow and he loved telling me about his long relationship with the bike.  his brother bought it from the original owner in 1973.  A year later he bought it from his brother.  After gravitating towards the cafe look (this guy was ahead of the coolness curve in my opinion) the bike started morphing into the picture above.  Mods include an 836 kit installed by BJ- Owner of Mongomeryville Cycle Center when he had a small shop on County Line Rd. circa 1977 I beleive.  If you are from the Philly area- it helps with some history.

The bike has not been modified since the late 1970's, and was put into storage around 1980.  In 1989 the bike was legally put back on the raod, but only ridden three times.  I then purchased the bike, and it has not run since 1989.  The bike a cool time capsule!

What do you think?

It looks very interesting but I think we need some better photos - too dark to really see anything. Great looking tank/sidecovers though and it sounds like you found a gem.

good luck with it!
cheers

I then purchased the bike, and it has not run since 1989.

Are you telling us you've owned it for almost 20 years and it hasn't run?

Or did you just get it?

I'm thinking it's the latter.  Cool find.  Need more pics.

More pics will be posted after I get them in the daylight tomorrow.

I just got the bike, but the history is accurate from the long time PO.  The bike was fired up in 1989 once, so technically it hasn't run since then.  The PO is a real die hard bike guy and did a great job of moth balling the bike.  I'm sure it won't take much to bring it back alive.

Here are some other pics.

Cool little art work on the custom fender.

Marzocchi shocks and if you look hard, it is a Kerker.

Better!!! I like that front fender - very nice.

How are the shocks on the back? They look the business  ;)

So what are your plans for the bike? Looks likes it going to be a fun ride!

Thanks for the extra pics.

does the bike still have the centrestand ??

what length are those marzocchis - I have a set but I think they are 14 1/2" centre to centre, and then will not be really useful for the centrestand ??

nice unit though - gotta ask    how much  ??? :)

I can measure the shocks and see.  I did put it up on the centerstand already, so I can say it doesn't have an issue.

The bike has not ran in a long time, so i can't say much about the shocks, but the PO said they were a nice (but expensive) upgrade back when hne rode it.

I need to pull the plugs and oil the cylinders (just out of general principal- it turns over with the kick).  I want to install a stock airbox and put a battery in, then fire it up.  I don't know what I'll do with it, since I have a 750 I like.  I actually would like to get either a nice KO550 or a CB175 or CB200.  Until I find one, I'll probably keep this 836 as a second bike.

I found the bike on CL and was the 2nd person to call.  The 1st guy couldn't get there, and I was next.  The PO told me there were literally 30 other people interested.  Fortunately the guy kept to his price.  I think I stole it at $500.  There will be some work ahead needing new tires, chain etc.  All-in-all I'm happy.

Consider a fork brace.

On the stock front fender the bracing was part of the fender.

Looks like your fender is held on with 2 hose clamps.

my bike is a 75F model, and if ok can you measure your shocks - and was it really difficult to get on the centrestand or came up easy ?
thanks for the reply   :)

Nice bike, I would say you stole it!  Love the shocks, might want to take those off and sell them separately...

I checked the shocks, and they appear to be stock lenght.  I had this bikeon the center stand, and a parts bike on the center stand.  Both measured about 13 1/4" from center to center.

It should be real easy to get it on the center stand then!  I actually like to install the lowering kit on 750's and have never had a problem putting one up on the CC.

To you guys checking this thread, I did post in the wanted section regarding the bracket for the speedo.  Has anyone ever installed K3 gauges on a K2?  I have not looked them over enough to say if they are the same.
