the question was larger than 450cc and before the bomber.  was there anything earlier and bigger than the depression era flatheads from rikuo?

It was known about the other big bikes but they never left Japan.
The Black Bomber was only sent to the UK in black, it wasn't a big success, I suppose you could say it went down like a bomb ;D ;D ;D
There was a company in the UK that offered an alternative to the stock bike.
Ken Ives offered on with a red tank and clip ons, I think it was at the same price.

It was a matter of being right, not asking the next question.  but i will keep it going if you like.  (you will have to ask one when you inevitably answer this one though so be ready!

what was the first Japanese water cooled 4 stroke?

If I'm right, here's an easy one (-ish). If not, here's an easy one.

Honda launched the CB750 to an unsuspecting motorcycle world in 1968. In doing so they scuppered the plans of another one of the 'Big 4' who were planning on a bike of the same capacity. What was the company, and what was the name of the project (not the name of the bike) that they started as a result?

I was WRONG...WRONG.. :o

on GL1000..water Buffalo preceded it.. >:(

Actually the question Nick asked was not answered correctly.. It was the Kawi 750 that was "scuppered'..

Then to one up the Honda they CHANGED it to 900cc

Next question, what was the RAREST 750 DOHC to come out of Japan.??

relax Frank, you was right.  the suzy was a two-stroke.  (part II of the Q)

as for your Q, the prototype Z1s were DOHC and 750cc and must be pretty rare???

There were 2 names for the project, one I can't remember (cos I'm old  ;D ;D ;D ) but the other was nanahan or somthing like that, it meant 750 in Japanese and was basicaly a new word, now popular in the Japanese lingo.
Pm me a clue to the other code, see if it will jog my failing memory ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Klark is right, The Z2 was produced and sold in some parts of the world.. I have seen 1 in LA, maybe a second somewhere.

I always wanted a Hot Z1 for the street.. like low 10,s or 9s

With the Z2 you would have 750 reggie and badges, yet be able to put 1300cc or even bigger barrels on it.. great fun for the street.. ;D
