Andy750's movie list
« on: May 21, 2008, 03:48:37 PM »
it has recently come to my attention that our fine Scottish-in-America friend Andy750  might profit from some intensive absorption of our fine American customs and cultcha, such as it may be.  and what better way to do this than watching American MOVIES!!  (god forbid, i certainly wouldn't want him watching television....except perhaps a select few reruns from our childhood.)  now we wouldn't want him to give up a perfectly good motorcycle season so perhaps we can help him with a 'to-do' list for the cold winter months when they return.
so come on people, sing out!  what's YOUR list of good american movie and tv entertainment to help out our good friend andy??  and for those of you from around the globe, what is the quintessential american movie to you?  we don't have to list the Academy Award winners...just a good ol' roundup of films that might be helpful.
frank's suggestions, in no particular order:

American Graffetti
Jaws
Caddyshack
Terminator 1
Halloween
My Cousin Vinny
American History X
The Graduate
Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction
The Usual Suspects

I'd like to lay claim to "The Road Warrior" but give the Aussies their due.
Thank-you all for your contributions and cooperation.

All excellent choices so far. I would add another hockey movie; 'Miracle' with Kurt Russell.

If ya like classics anything with Spencer Tracy.

We shouldn't forget that Andy has been inspired by American movies for years -- Easy Rider has been a life changer for him   ;D

Somewhat  ;)

Wow thanks for all the movie suggestions but what do you know Ive seen most of them....I was a huge movie buff when I was back in Scotland. This was one of the reasons I wanted to ride around America and see most of the places I had seen in the movies (like in Easy Rider I went to the 'diner" location and many other spots/followed the same route in the movie etc etc). I like to go see the locations (Dances With Wolves -Badlands) to get a sense of what the movie was trying to convery....Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Devils Tower, WY. etc etc...Texas Chainsaw Massacre....riding through some desolate spots in Texas - fast!  ;)

cheers
Andy

andy - and here i thought you travelled so much because you heard of a great diner "just down the road"!  one thing leads to another and whaddya know, arizona is just around the corner.  good food is a wonderful thing!

it struck me that we yanks oftentimes speak in a verbal shorthand, referencing verbal touchstones that are picked up from movies and some tv shows.   not that there's anything wrong with that! (seinfeld).    but perhaps i just need to get out more!  ;D
now having said that.....a few more good flicks for the road

Die Hard
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Casablanca
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - or any spaghetti western with Clint  (ya, i know where they were made..)
The French Connection
RoboCop

one or two episodes of Gilligan's Island - but only so one could answer the question without hesitation: "Ginger or Maryanne"

and how many episodes of "The Three Stooges" would be considered mandatory?

To answer the Stooges question: all but the ones with Curly Joe... the gay Stooge. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

If you want to annoy intellectual snobs in conversation take note of the latent social commentary in 3S's films. Classism, the Depression, role of the sexes, the plight of the whipped cream pie.

Another example of either/or, two-valued thinking.  To me, the obvious answer was always "both." ;D

I tried to pick ones that weren't/aren't household names but still very good. How about:
Pleasantville
Always
Avenging angello
Blue Thunder
Blind Date
The Crew
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (OK not great, damned funny.)
Fifth Element
The Frisco Kid
Gunshy
An Innocent Man
Jeremiah Johnson
L.A. Confidential
The Last of the Mohicans
Raising Arizona
Red Sun
Rustler's Rhapsody  (Maybe funnier if you grew up up with early TV westerns, like Lone Ranger, Cicso Kid,  and that ilk)
Shattered
Sneakers
Suicide Kings
Sunset
Lloyd... (SOHC4 #11 Original Mail List)
72 500, 74 550, 75 550K, 75 550F, 76 550F, 77 550F X2, 78 550K, 77 750F X2, 78 750F, 79CX500, 85 700SC, GL1100
