my weekend ...doh
« on: June 02, 2008, 08:16:55 AM »
Well I recleaned the tank with the works coated with two cycle oil and put the new petcock on ....took it immediatly to the gas station and filled it....Tank looked pretty good and gas looked great coming out...one thing I did notice is the oem petcok has a filter over the filler tube, which the preious two petcocks I had didn't. Well put it on...it wont start so seems like my carbs are clogged agian from the rusty crap that reformed. The inline filter wasnt even that dirty still free of junk only a couple tiny pieces. I cant believe the carbs would have got gunked up that quick I only took it around the block and back to my shed when I noticed the tank had rerusted agian when I looked in when I got it back to the shed. I checked the plugs they were dirty so I sanded them down and turned it over a couple of times with plugs out to try and shoot any dirt of stale gas out... So I guess I am looking for some insight here.. do you think the carbs are real bad or what I could do...or am I staring down taking the carbs off again and recleaning them....it ran good for the 5 min . ride before the shed now it wont even start.....

I don't think that flash rust from the tank will clog up the carbs.

I've never had good luck with sanding plugs.
Get new plugs and try again.

Agreed...for the few bucks it may save you a ton of time and energy looking for other causes.

One thing I have learned from here (and in particular from TT) is be methodical in your approach. Doing any trouble shooting with an unknow part (in this case fouled plugs) will only slow you down and lead down another rabbit hole...

I forgot one thing....I took one of the bottom screws out of the carb to see what the gas looked like that was in the carbs and nothing came out.......This is an important piece of information as even before my grandfather cleaned them...dirty crappy gas would come out and that was running a dirty tank on it for a while now nothing. :o

So...
You aren't getting fuel.
Find out why.

Unhook the fuel line from tank to carbs. Turn on petcock. Fuel come out?

If not, find out why.

If it does, check the other carbs too. Could be an issue with the carb interconnect hoses.
No.

There is gas coming out of the tank and the hose that connects to the carbs. I took the screw out of the carb closes to that line....so I am thinking it has to be blocked.

yeah he stated it above, maybe its sticky float prob, if not it would be good to put on the list of things to check. Ya know thats the way mechanics work on things, its a process of elimination. ;D

How cleaned were they?

Anyway, take off the bowl on that carb, and actuate the float by hand. See if it dumps fuel as you drop the float, and stops the flow when the float is lifted.
No.

Sure sounds like there was some gas in the float bowls, it burned off on the 5 minute ride and now nada.

Definately check for the sticking float situation mentioned previously and also make sure that your Grandpa use the correct float height setting AND that he didn't install the floats upside down ;)

Gas should DEFIANTELY come out when you open the drain screw.

not sure though the gas looked really bad when I drained the tank before I cleaned it....I am going to have to check the floats but I have a bad feeling the carbs are clogged and with a new baby girl three months old it is fun trying to make time to get this thing fixed. I want to use it commute this year.

Oh yeah brother, you will get spurts of free time, use it to your ability. I have two step kids Katlyne-8yrs, Seth-7yrs, and two of my own Joey-5yrs, and Abigail-2yrs, and i get a minute or two here and there to play. The wife is laid up with a broken ankle right now too so i get all the house duties plus an acre of yard to mow on top of taking care of the garden. So like Tony Little said " You can do it!"  :P :P ;D ;D ;D

Did you use an acetone rinse after rinsing the acid out to remove all the water?  If you don't get all the water droplets and vapor out it will flash rust even with oil coating the tank.  You have to work fast once the acid has done its job.  Rinse with warm water 3 times then rinse 3 more times with 2 cups of acetone.  The Acetone binds to the water and takes it along when you dump it out.  Each rinse of fresh acetone absorbs more and more of the remaining water.  The more rinses with acetone the better the chance you will keep it from flash rusting.  Once your last acetone rinse is done immediately pour in a gas/oil mix and slosh it around well.  Don't wait for the acetone to dry all the way before pouring the gas/oil mix in or it will flash rust.  I did my tank back in Feb/March and it is still perfectly rust free.  The whole operation from start to finish should take you less than an hour, just have everything staged and ready.  Also try to do it on a very dry sunny day.

maybe that is where my problem lies....I thought just just washing it out a couple times with gas would be ok.

I'm having a similar problem.  I took the petcock off and took the tank to be boiled out, they did that and then coated it w/ the 'Red Kote' product that's blue.  It somehow made the fuel hole narrower so I couldn't use the in-tank fuel filter with the petcock (constricted it so nothing went through) So I put on an in-line and went home happy.  Bike started getting iffy on starting, then sputtering and coughing.  I put on a new filter (old was filthy, just gritty etc inside, with what looked like little bits of cloth or something n there, too ???)  turned on the gas and... maybe a teaspoon came out, no more.  That was it.  I jiggled, wiggled and tapped.  Not an air bubble, no, it's f*cked.  So now I'm trying to figure out a way to drain 3 gal. of fresh gas without wasting all of it so I can clean out the petcock again. Any suggestions?

Sounds to me like you've got float valves sticking. Takes about 15 minutes to take those bowls off and another 5-10 to pull the floats and valves out. Won't hurt and it's fairly painless... Then again, I've done it about 10+ times in the past week.

but wouldn't the petcock still let gas out, even if the float was sticky?  Even totally disconnected from the carbs, nothing flows. :-\

Take the tank off and turn it upside down! That really solves the problem of having a few gallons of gas in the tank... You really need to remove the tank to do any serious cleaning of the tank/petcock anyway.

As for the OP. If clean gas is coming out of your tank don't worry about a little bit of flash rust in the tank. You know from the petcock up you're golden. And if your g-pa cleaned the carbs it's probably not gunked up too bad in there either. But I bet the hose from the carb to the petcock is gunked up somewhere... It doens't take much stopage to keep gas from flowing from your tank.

I was shocked to find some white stuff in my petcock did as good a job at keeping gas in the tank as the petcock itself. I mean, not a DROP came out.
