Mike, same here.

A gentleman? Always. No excuse not to be.

As to the other, I've done my share of scrimpiinig and shortcutting on projects. ITs a luxury, like a toilet in the shop, to have a fully funded project and not worry about the cost (too much anyway). This is my legacy piece.

Although granted I'll have more in it than a good used (or new) Hayabusa, that's not the point is it?    ;)

Check your PMs.

I am interested in the calibration of your speedo... Any chance of getting a discount if we send in two? Remember I am going with the 18" front as well.

Ron what about using a 400F speedo drive? I use one on my wifes 550 that has an 18" front.

as of planning a 18" front wheel I would like to get more detail about the calibration as well.

400F speedo has a smaller/thinner housing. Not sure if the axle is same with the gl1000 axle OD. I guess calibration makes sense comparing the cost and hassle of purchasing a 400f speedo + washer costs etc.

I don't know, we could ask. This shop was recommended to me 10+ years ago by the VJMC. I sent them my 68 CB77 SuperHAwk instrument which is a speedo/tach in one large oval instrument. It was seized up from sitting 25 years. They brought it back to life, but it was pricy.

Still I don't know them well enough to refer someone else. I'm willinig to take my own chances.

Now you tell me!    :D

I have no idea if that would work or not. I have to have the speedo reconditioned (nternal tune up, new case, new face) anyway, so it just makes to recal from the instrument side.

But that would be interesting to know if the cb400F drive would work.

Recal: Taking the instrument apart and reoiling, changing faces etc is a common DIY activity documented on the forum. I've taken one apart to practice. I could do it, but I'm not as comfortable working on them as someone whose had hundreds apart. So I asked Foreignspeedo if they could do it (I knew they could but just checking) as they are K1 instruments and fairly valuable.  They said sure. Just do this routine (push it 52" 9.5" and count the revols of the speedo cable. Give them the number (23.9 BTW) and they take it from there. Sounds like they do it all the time.

In googling the process I found many other shops that advertised the service. Lots of car guys do it, as they change wheel size on customs, rods, etc.  I don't really know for sure what they do. Change a gear, make a part? I don't know.

I bot cases and faces and rings from Lecram. I'd ask him if he could do it, but I'm hesitant to ship a NOS K1 tach out of the country.

Someone will ask about price from ForeignSpeedo. Recondition the instruments is $85 each, incl disassembly, clean, lube, install parts supplied by owner, reassemble. I'm assuming the recal is as much as $100 more, frankly I didn't ask. $50 would be a deal.

Boxed and ready to go, maybe Mon/Tues.

Pulled all the case studs out. They were routinely 3/16" shorter than the APE studs.

That'll help getting the old base gasket off.

I may be out to lunch on that 400F drive, I now remember I use a 400 speedo on that 550 too.

It was easily spaced to fit, but that might be the easy part. Using Ron's method of rolloing a certain distance would tell you something?

Well either way I ordered a 400f drive for $20 shipped off eBay. I will take it apart and compare it to a 750. Maybe the gears will be different? Hopefully it will work. Sorry for the hijack Ron.

That would be an interesting factoid if it works. In my case I need to recondition the instrument anyway, cracked face, pitted body and all.

As to the hijack, this thread is as much for sharing info as my build, at this point. Let us know what you find.   :D

The 400 of course uses an 18" front, the speedo gearbox is certainly geared differently. Question is in the speedometers gearing. Cheap thing to try. Actually I think I have that info in my shop, I'll take a peak later.

Wow, interesting stuff. In fact I have a CB350F fender on my front as it is arced for a 18" wheel, but looks exactly like a CB750 front fender, stays and all.

It does look like the 400F speedo drive will need a shim.  Had I known all this I might have taken a different approach. But since my speedo had to come apart anyway...

Your research leads one to think the instruments may be standard internal and the drives are different gearing.

Following the tracking, my instruments are not to SanDiego yet. Spent a day in a warehouse in IL. But soon.  Here's a before picture.

The tach is brand new OEM. But since I've got to change the face of the speedo, I'll have the face of the tach changed to match. Using K0 faces, so they'll be a different color, and the redline will be 8500. To the consternation (I hope) of CB750 aficionados.

The speedo will get a new replacement cover from Lecram and new crimp rings.

Turned the heaters on to knock off the chill. Had to cut them off, Too hot on lowest setting! Yay! Can't say too much for InfraRed shop heaters.

I'd put some longer period S&W StreetStroker shocks as the sidestand was just too long and the thing stood too straight. Now with the adjustable sidestand, I can use any length I want, decided to put the shorter S&W chrome bodies (new still in box!) back on. They are shorter as can be seen.  Gotta stay true to the "chrome whore" build theme as much as possible. I'll get the springs chromed someday. This was not as quick an operaton as could be. Had to remove the rack and turn sigs.

The Street Strokers were a tad shorter than stock. so these and the 17" wheel and 70 series tire really chopped it. Too much I was thinking initially years ago. But time has passed and ground clearance be damned. With the onset of my neuropathy, lower will be better.

There was a recent thread abut installing fork springs tight soils up or down. Many threads before that even. Not as contentious as an oil thread but differing thoughts. Even Progressive instructions say it doesn't matter. But on the original S&W chrome body shocks ca 1970s, the spring (supplied by Progressive, see print) can only go tight winds up.

Just for the sake of looking, see the "S&W" etched into the body? No "Monroe" These are pre-merger. Cool

So whilst waiting for MRieck to work his top-end magic, I  had to swap out the too short (though HD, of unknown origin) with APE studs. And remove the base gasket. It was in very good shape after lifting the cylinders. But at this point, no chances, its coming off. With the studs out it was a piece of cake and came off whole.

Ahh, the 400HP APE/Crower rods and KA Performance tension er.

Cleaned the surface with thinner and acetone, ready for cyls. Cleaned and chased the stud holes, threaded in 8 studs. Called it a day.

Called Foreign Speedo, they got the instruments and my list of demands. Said they could do it.

Eggsited!

Thanks, I meant to ask this on your thread. Are your instrument covers chromed or is the black real shiny, reflecting the flash?

Now that I know more about covers, it seems to me they could be chromed if one wanted to?

Do they go over the original ones or do you disassemble the clocks and replace them?

I know Z1, I'll go there and back track in your thread as well.
