Yup Brown's 7 step process. But i had to pick and choose what I sent to them due to budget constraints.

Corbin says they will make for the Fs, but I'm betting its for the DOHC Fs, not the SOHC as they are too close to the K, which they don't support.

But many non-Corbins would make it. Besides those mentioned in other posts here there is a place in Jacksonville, http://www.sargentcycle.com/  that would likely do one-offs.

So we farted around cleaning parts and sizing things up. Made the acorn head bolts from threaded rod, to bolt on the handlebars and did so.

These were "European Touring Bars" pre-drilled for wires. Cannot remember where I got them way back in 1980. They are the most comfortable bar I've ever had on any bike. Best I can tell they are close to the "R" BMW bars. Current bars called "Touring Bars" just don't match the bend

I need to remake the stand I've been using as it's become unstable. So we put the centerstand on with jackstands. That may be all we need.

That allowed me to sit on it for the first time in umpteen years.  Sigh!

So this week will be cleaning parts, masking the engine for painting. Gotta get that done while the weather holds. Fall coming fast.

I thought I had a new 48t rear for the cryogenics. Pulled it out of the box, its a new 45t. Why? So I ordered a 48t and its backordered.

Ron..Jerry..

Thanks for the feedback on Corbin seat..chrome stuff.

Just FYI: I have contacted Corbin about getting a new seat from them (for my 550).  They still will do it..said they still had the original foam molds, et al. to do it.  Only catch is that they won't do it w/o having the bike AND seat pan to do it on (can't imagine why..if they still have all the molds, etc.)..think it's probably their way of saying that they really don't want to do it.  Prices started @ $400.00.

Regarding the Denver Bumper chrome (Jerry)..yeah..it's only a 2-step process (nickle-chrome)..but it looks fine IF they do the preliminary polishing, prep work first (which they didn't do on mine initially).  I believe that the OEM chrome is only 2-step also..which the rest of my bike is basically.  So..I didn't see the need to get 3 or 7-step chrome. Main drawback for me was the redo..extra wait involved.

BTW: I worked in a chrome shop when I was still in my late teens-early 20's (had to be 18 to work there)..know a little about the process/procedure.  The 3 and 7-step (think the extra 4-steps are mainly re-polishing..re-copper plating..re-polishing..to get the finish brilliant-perfect?) don't actually effect longevity/durability.  When I did it..the extra copper step (especially with copper buffing & re-plating) actually made the finished product less durable (though not appreciably..if maintained properly)..reason being that the copper's much softer than either nickle or chrome..and if it's dinged/hit..the chrome itself cracks and peels..because the underlying copper was dented.  I saw many a chrome job crack and peel in the "old days"..when the copper-nickel-chrome process was used commonly.  Just a little bit of personal trivia here.

Ron: interesting explanation on the handle bars you're using..I agree with your assessment. I can never figure how these weekend warriors..with high rise ape-hangers expect to go any distance.  I remember riding a chopper with ape hangers about 120 miles one time..it felt like I had been hanging on a chin-up bar all that time! Practical idiocy..if you ask me.

Looking forward to your next installments on Phaedrus II.

Al:
re: the seat. I'd say your final assessment is correct, they really don't want to do it. When they did mine, the first try was way off. The rider section was actually TALLer than stock and it encroached on the tank and wouldn't close. had to send it back and with Corbin a return can go into a black hole. Took MANY phone calls to finally get it back, though it was corect finally.

re: the bars. no matter how much garish 70s chopper looking stuff I may put on it, it will ultimately be comfortable if nothing else. And that style bar is comfortable.

Well thanks! But I truly hope I ride it into the ground like I did the first Phaedrus. Not likely, as I just don't ride as much anymore, and I've got other bikes I didn't use to have, but that's the wish.

Man, love that rear luggage rack. Very retro looking. Anyone know where I can pick one of these up? Sissy bar not necessary, but rack - oh yeah!

Ventura is now listing the sport rack which I have and the Pack Rack which I thought was discontinued, on their site under "fitments" for the CB750K2+ and the Fs.  However the North American distributor is not listing it. So it will probably take some phone calls and begging to get one.

At the time I bot mine they implied there would not be anymore. But perhaps a resurgence in interest has sparked the supply.

"It was a great day in the shop" to paraphrase Craig Ferguson.   :D

So we got started with stainless steel seat brackets. Not really needed, but they were there and cooler than stock. So i did a little horsetrading with Ted and Thomas at Classic Cycle City. Seems I've bot a fair amount of their stuff and always pleased. SS Braid Oil Lines (Crimped not clamped), chrome dip stick, and other stuff. Great people to work with.

The rolled part of the clamp was slightly too tight for the pin to slide thru, nothing a little nudge with a flat screwdriver wouldn't cure.

So we put in the battery box and tool tray. New chrome button heads and fender washers on everything under the seat.

I'm thinking I'll ditch the seat latch altogether, maybe use magnets to hold it closed. Don't want to hang the ugly latch on the side of the frame.

Came across the driver footpegs, chromed but leftover from Phaedrus I. Left side rubber shows the signs of spirited riding in my earlier days, though i can still do it on my FJR, when the rear shocks are set on soft.   ;D

Only the left side is worn though as the muffler is the limiting factor on the right side.   I'll need to disassemble the pegs and clean them up, maybe rechrome. But I wanted to mock them up because...

It would give me someplace to put my feet, while mugging for the camera!

The cylinder was mistreated years ago, don't remember how but I had busted a fin.

A little JB Weld, my first experience. I cleaned the edges of the wound to get it to mate up as well as possible. Sets up in 4 minutes, clamp applied only a slight pressure, cylinder padded with a thin piece of wood shim, seems to be a good repair.

Went ahead and took the opportunity to glue the acorn nuts to the threaded rod used on all the handlebar clamps, top triple tree clamps, etc.

Got out my head gasket, bot many years ago. Wondering if any engine builders out there are familiar with this brand "Klingerit 1000". Its been stored between two pieces of cardboard for many years, doesn't seem to have any issues. Going to use it to make a template to mask off the top of the crankcases for painting.

Finally (3 weeks) received a 48T sprocket from Motogrid.com, though it was in a Parts Unlimited pckg. Needed it to complete the box of stuff going to Cryogenics. Including the tranny and cam, mounts, etc.

Lot of things interrelated with other things, holding up progress, though i always have something to do.

Poured a concoction of pea gravel and steel nuts into my gas tank and shook it up to dislodge the rust. Very effective. Ready for a treatment. Then I'll be glassbeading it along with the oil tank. The gas tank needs repainting, long story. But I've forgotten about the oil tank as well. So should it be black or send back to popwder coating for gold treatment? I'm leaning towards gold.

First time removinmg a gas cap. Drove out the pin for the cap. Ground off the head of the screw on the lock as it was beyond function.

But once ground off, it came out easily.

More later...

Yeah when I saw the picture, same thought, its small. I'm a short 5'11", 160lb, only slightly heavier than when I was riding it regularly. The rear wheel is part of it, at 140/70-17. But you know my FJR is a /70-17 as well.  So its all perspective.

Haven't had much time for my Hawk lately. ITs like the CBs in that they can be extensively modified and are a lot of fun, but down on horsepower next to its modern peers. They have a single cam, 3 valve motor, in that beautiful chassis, massive twin spars with a single sided swingarm. It takes a lot of work to get the engine up to a stock Suzuki SV650, but they're more fun when you do.

That's a good example. Mine has a 5 gallon carbon fibre gas tank, lower bars, Corbin seat, and a few "sleeper" engine and suspension mods.

i'd love to do a hawk someday. i think the africa twin is related. anyway, i've gathered they (engines) have potential.

5'11" short? i remember when that was tall! i'm 5'10-11" for pete's sake! it's those darn growth hormones in our beef!  ::)

have you taken measurements of those bars? i have 400f bars to put on but you say yours are comfortable.

Yes, some people have shoe horned African Twins into Hawk chassis. But you can get the same bang if you're willing to weld up your crank, with a stock motor bored to the max and all tricked out. About the same money, and less non-traditional hassle. The Hawk crank is the weak link for max power. You can get the rest of it to work even with the limits of the heads.

By short 5'11" i meant not quite 5'11". Though you'reright I think the growth hormones in the Big Macs have re written human size at least in the US. My 2 nephews were both over 6'4" at age 16. Tall parents for sure, but gee whiz.

My bars are 28"W; 5.5" pull back (with the control part of the bar level) and 2.5 rise, again with the control area level. I actually have it tilted down a bit.

Closest I've ever found since are Flanders pieces, especially the BMW R bars, except they are too narrow. http://www.sideroadcycles.com/index.html

i think the width, 28 over 24, adds to the comfort for me. Wide shoulders.

The 400F bars are pretty straight, narrow too,  IIRC. My wrists need a little pull back.

And so it is as I feared. My gas tank leaks.   :(

Lesson learned. When I started this project the first thing I had done was the paint job. I cleaned the tank with muriatic acid. Man was it clean. But I had never heard of flash rust.

I had the tank painted purdy, then the project got stalled and it sat on the shelf for MANY years. When I picked it up I could hear the rust bits sliding around and the paint was bubbling.

Tonight, I cleaned it again this time with Milkstone product (phosphoric acid dilution) recommended by VJMC member. Let it sit with several gallons in it and leaks appear along the seam edge.

So, I have WTB in the classifieds and I'll be sniffing around ebay. K3+ tank, left side petcock, fewer dents the better.

THat's the b - -ch, this tank has NO dents at all.

Thanks, I'm getting over it. There were other issues with the paint job and I'm actually kind of glad to just trash the whole thing and start over. Still purple, but different. The painter and I just weren't on the same page and I was happy to have something with his name on it so I didn't hold out for what I really wanted.

Onwards and upwards.

It took a while, several searches that resulted in finds in other languages. But I found the source of Klingerit gaskets.

https://www.klingeruk.co.uk/pages/about

I have no idea where i came up with this gasket. It is exactly 67mm, my piston size. Maybe Arias provided it, or the machinist that did my cylinder and head work. Nevertheless, Klinger has cred, so I'll be using it.

FYI: I cleaned the tank of rust, first with pea gravel and nuts (of the boltand nut variety) to get the big chunks out. Then with this:

It was recommended to me by a VJMC member. Mild solution took the rust down to bare steel internally.

I left the tank with several gallons of solution in it and with in minutes the bottom seam began to leak from several places.

Totally my fault. I left the tank untreated on the shelf for many years and condensation cycles caused serious rust that went all the way through.  So I'm on to finding another tank.

For those who may never have taken a gas cap off, this was my first. Photo of grinding screw head off is in post above. Once the head of the screw is off, this piece will slide out the side, bring the shaft of the screw with it.

Once off we can see the nastiness beneath it. The painter had agreed he would remove the cap for me. But he didn't, masked it off and sprayed. It may have been too much to ask of him to remove the cap, but he should have told me. I'd made other arrangements.

But the tank is now trash so bygones.
