Sidecars?...on a rigid frame chopper? it possable??
« on: June 12, 2008, 07:32:56 PM »
Just toying with some ideas for when i get around to building a chassis for the CB750 engine...i got thinking about the idea of building a sidecar set up kinda like the one shown in Mad Max....But im just trying to figure out how to go about it...anyone have any ideas? Well its that or mess around with the idea of building a SOHC based trike.......either one would be cool if it could be done...

I did a sidecar platform.. snuck it on the street at the shop a few times.. never tried it over 50 mph tho.

I thought of it on Wed, got tubing bent on Thirstday..

started welding on Fri.. had it on the vintage dirt track on Sunday..

go for it..mine was left side..

I'm no expert on the subject, but can't see why it wouldn't be possible. As long as you get the lead, toe in and lean out set right, it should work fine. If it is on a hard tail bike, I don't think I would want too much suspension on the hack. If you are gonna trash the riders kidneys, might as well wreck the passengers also.. :D

As I am learning with my new to me hack, slight adjustments to lead, toe-in and lean out can have a very positive or negative effect on handling. Therefore, I would resist the tempation to simply just weld a hack to your bike. You should have good mounts that can allow for the adjustment of lead, toe-in and lean-out in order to actually be able to drive the thing. Otherwise you just end up with a very cool looking door stop. Here is one place to check for stuff, although I am sure there are many other places around...

I built in about 15 degrees or more of toe-in adjustment.. used no plans....just wung it.. ran it on a slammed stock frame with struts & 6 over swingarm..

Try to keep your overall width at the footpeg to 4 ft or just under so you can get it on a pickup easily.. ;D

754, you seem to be a do it yourself guy ;D http://www.flickr.com

Now no more excuses, lets see what you have ;D

When you are in Flickr and on the photo you are trying to display here, right click on the image, then select Properties. In the middle of the box that comes up is the Address..http, blah, blah. Highlight that URL address and copy it. Come back to your post and paste the address in where you want the picture to appear in the input area. Then highlight it again within the input area and select the image icon above the input area. It will place delimiters on each end of the URL that the software will then interpret and recognize it as an image and retrieve the content from the address you inserted.

If those don't make sense, try these instructions. ;D

Get to that place were you can click on "All sizes" Then holding down control key click on image and take the "open in new window" option. copy the url at the top of the browser......
Go to forum, click on image icon
Then paste in the url from above between the ............... brackets into the forum

One way i have debated going about building a trike was using a sold rear axle from an ATV but i wasnt sure if that would work or not..

Not long ago someone posted a pic of a reverse trike made with a CB750 and an ATV's FRONT axle, so I don't see why your idea couldn't be made to work, given enough determination and money :)

About the only real worry i can think of is the fact there wouldnt be a diff set up...which would basicly leave me in the same situation as a car with a spool rear end..

Sidecar on a rigid? No problem. I'd recommend a sprung seat and a conversation with this guy, he's probably one of the most knowledgable sidecar people in the country.

I ride a trike, honestly it's alot less difficult to ride at highway speed than a sidecar setup, and not as difficult to safely build.
