Duly Proud of Her, Ammended to 'NOW We're In Trouble!'
« on: September 02, 2008, 02:27:32 PM »
Labor Day Sunday was the first full day I've had to do something with my wife for months.  We planned a ride around the towns north of us, including a return stop to look for the old Jewish graves south of Mora.

It rained.
And rained.
And kept raining.
From 11:00 AM till we got home around 9 or 9:30 PM it rained.  The only real break is while we stopped for coffee and some dry fleece clothing (and socks for me) on sale in Angel Fire.

Although she's had her license about 1 1/2 years, my wife is still a real novice rider.  I think she has ridden her bike a total of a few hundred miles.  She tends to be a bit nervous and hesitant.  But she gets a real charge from riding.

We started out in the rain.  She led up on the interstate for the one hour ride to Las Vegas, NM.  She kept up a good speed, and her bike isn't really comfortable much above 70 mph anyway.  Northern New Mexico is very pretty, even in the rain.

Shortly after we got on the interstate, something round flew onto my chest just below my right shoulder.  I was about to flick it off as road debris, when I picked it up and saw it was my right mirror!  ::)  I managed to get my right chest pocket open and the mirror into it without losing my camera, etc.  In Las Vegas we stopped at Auto Zone, bought some RTV and duct tape, and fashioned a fix.  It held for the whole day.  I'm always kinda happy with ugly on-the-road fixes.  Somehow I've always associated that with the ride.  ::)

North out of LV in the rain.  I led since I'd been up there once before.  My wife was a bit slow behind me, but kept up a steady pace.  Once we got onto real back roads among the farms and ranches, it was fairly slow riding with the rain and the usual risk of meeting someone's cow or goat around a bend.  We stopped not far from the cemetery we were looking for.  It was pouring rain, by now the rain was getting inside our gear, and we decided to skip the search till clearer weather.   We came out on the 'main' road in Mora, after forging through a blind puddle on the corner.  The next turn north was almost immediate, which led to a quick skid in the mud as we missed it and had to turn round.

The road to Angel Fire is all back road, with quite a bit running through National Forest land.  Rain, mud, lots of curves, and pretty scenery.  We'll have to go back and check out Coyote Creek State Park sometime.

Angel Fire is a hoity toity ski resort town.  We stopped at a shopping center to get coffee at a food market.  While parked, some guy comes up with the usual 'is that a 750?' 'Yep, last year of the SOHC'.  8)  He stood around talking bike with me for about 45 minutes.  'I always wanted one, etc.'  Has a Shadow that he can't seem to get on the road.  While we talked about the 750Four, my wife disappeared into Mountain Sports.  Wants to get warm.  When I finally went to look for her, I see there's a sale.  Uh oh.  Sensibly enough, though, she bought a nice fleece sweater to wear for the rest of the ride, as hers was wet by now.  I got socks (my favorite ropers can't withstand all day in driving rain), and then broke down for a North Face shirt on sale.

Back on the road warmer and drier, through the mountain curves to Taos.  My wife is keeping her slow but steady pace, happier now but still cautious in the road conditiions.  These roads always have a bit of sand and silt and rockfall on them in a steady rain.  Every so often I drop back to let some cars pass and stay close to her.  We've been riding through the mountains in the rain for hours now.  She's getting a little tired, though still game and riding safely and competently.  Actually, she forgets this was 'liquid sunshine' and normal in Vancouver.  ;)  We stopped to look at a map, and I said my afternoon prayers by the roadside in the rain and mud with a glorious view of the mountains and low clouds for my sanctuary.  ;D

South out of Taos along the Rio Grande river.  The river is running high and frothy.  Visibility is fair, but it is getting late and a bit darker.  As my wife pointed out, rain is one thing, dark is another (she's never ridden in the dark), but rain and dark is a bit much.  Stopped for gas in Velarde.  Still raining.  Now dark.  Three guys find their way over to us, 'is that a 750?'  'I had one of those as a chopper'.  The old bike rarely fails to draw admirers.  I get my obligatory ice cream cone, and we're on for the home stretch.  Maybe an hour and a quarter to go.

Wife leads through Pojaque and towards home to Santa Fe.  Raining hard and dark.  She sets a fair but cautious pace.  Very sensible.  Coming into north Santa Fe she stops a bit quickly for a light.  I fishtail behind her with the sudden stop, but my bike stays upright and I stop short of hitting her.  My heart rate certainly jumps though!

Just another ten minutes and we're safely home.  Wet again under our gear, though not as bad as earlier.  Tired and satisfied from a long day out in challenging conditions.  My wife definately earned her wheels as a road warrior on this one!  We had a good day for sure.  Only about 230 miles, but given the conditions, back roads, stops for mirror repair and to warm up we did just fine.  And I have a newly capable riding partner for longer trips.   8)

Love the pics.  Jealous of the ride.  And I do believe you can stop with the "novice" stuff.  I don't think you can be a novice and lead, even if it's just you she is leading!

Point well taken!  And I will tell my lovely wife exactly that tonight.  I DID tell her what an accomplishment her day was, and that she should be very satisfied with how she handled it all.

Great story. I think a thread dedicated to our significant others and their acceptance, assistance, and sharing of the sickness passion would be a prudent thing.

Sounds like you had a great ride man. And got to see a novice become a full fledged rider in the process. One other thing that should be taken into mind is the fact that the old CB got the attention it needs along the way maybe this ride was a way of telling you not to sell it?

Hey Jonah, I'll pass that on.  Todah!

I'm looking forward to doing a nice loop with her up the coast to Rosh Hanikra, over to the Hermon, south and down to the Kinneret and then over the Galil to Haifa.  I'll bet the Carmel has some good roads... ;D

I assure you, I was lucky even before she decided to ride.   ;D

I just took a seat in to a shop here to have them reshape it for our Sprint ST.  I like riding two-up with her, also;  and this is one of the steps to make that better for her.  OTOH, the Harley dealer just took in a Honda ST 1300 with 17,000 on trade...they're asking $8500 for it... :)

So, my wife (and riding partner! ;D) read the thread and appreciates your comments.  She also got on my case to correct the record.

She has put 1800 miles on her bike since buying it; not just few hundred.

She has ridden at night before.  Her MSF class was under lights (sort of) in the evening.  She said she also rode my old Yamaha at night, which I completely don't recall.  It is true that night and rain were a bit much together.  For anybody.  But she hadn't ridden the Shadow at night, so that added to the newness of the situation.

I told her she should just register and speak for herself.  ;)

In any case, her husband is duly proud of her.  She just got a new Tour Master rain suit.  Looks like we need to go out again!  :D

Well, my wife took her bike to work today (though not the first time), and then to do her errands.  I think a little adversity is good for getting her gumption up afterwards!   ;D

Okay, I hear Dr. Frankenstein's voice saying "I've created a monster!"

My lovely wife is not only getting more confident on the road; she wants to wield a wrench.  She just purchased from my buddy Dave 'I-recycle-bikes' a not running, almost all there Honda Ascot VT500 as a project bike.  ::)

What have I done?!  ;D

(Dear reader, I live in the same town as Medic)

MEdic - I have a new baby (as you may recall) and Sunday was also a rare day out for the three of us.  We took the Trooper up to Pecos before the rain thinking we would hike up to Hamilton Mesa.

This is a fantastic hike through pine and aspen onto a great grassy ridge running deep into the Sangre De Cristos ( and eventually to the Pecos falls, where one can fly fish for Rio Grande Cutthroat at 10,000ft)

Anyway:  It was raining.  We slid up the mud road, fed the baby, walked the dog in the rain.  Slid back down.  Drove up Holy Ghost, parked by the stream and listened to the rain and the stream and ate cheese and bread and good apples.  and mom's milk.

I only tell my one story on your thread because it was a wonderful unplanned day for us as well.

Rainy and overcast days are magic in the American desert.  They are wonder.

Great story and turn of events Medic!! You should be duly proud of your wifes accomplishments -there are plenty of guys who dont/wont ride in the rain and so she has turned into a "real" biker.

You are going to have some great riding adventures!

Best to both of you,
cheers
Andy

Well Medic, I for one think you should keep your wife off of this board! She has already one-upped me today since I drove into work in my escort since it was raining and didn't want to get soaked...not sure if I could handle her regailing us with tales of how she got the VT running so well and so quickly to boot! lol...

Just kidding I think you should encourage her to join the board and post. We seem to be fairly light in terms of participation from the fairer sex (not to discount Hope, Kitsune, MotoBunny etc) and I am sure she could hold her own in terms of contributions.

Greg, that sounds like a great day with the family!  Holy Ghost is a sweet place to just stop and sit.  I'll bet it was largely empty in the rain...just perfect!  Just watch the maniacs on the drive up the canyon...  When you get the F running, we should take our bikes up there.

Dennis, my wife is an enigma.  She belongs to a Shadow forum, but doesn't go on to ask questions about her bike.  Then she turns around and buys the Ascot.  She knows how this forum has been my salvation when working on my K8, and how I just appreciate you all.  I'll tell her to join, and post to Other Bikes, but I can't predict what she'll do.

I suspect the VT will be a long project.  No matter.  I'm hoping she finds some of the therapeutic value in wrenching, along with the practical benefits.

She's a rare bird, that's for sure!  ;D

Sounds like she is definitely a keeper though! It is nice to have a wife who can throw you a curve ball now and then. Just think how boring life would be if you ever got to the point where you could accurately predict what she would do in any and all situations. My wife and I are coming up on 10 years in a couple of weeks and as much as I know her she still throws me off occasionally!

I do wish though that I could get her more into the bikes. I have finally managed to get her out on the back of my CBR a couple of times in the country but that is it. Granted that thing isn't the most comfortable ride (even for me riding up front!) so that is some progress. She is definitely not the type to do ANY wrenching though! Hell, most times I have to pump her gas or she goes to a full serve and pays more!!!

Just when you think it can't get any worse...

My wife usually heads for bed earlier than me.  Tonight I see her lying in bed, one of the dogs already in there, and what is her bedtime reading?  Clymer for the Ascot VT500!  ::)

This is going too far... :o

Of course, she just says 'it isn't as if you had no idea who you were marrying...'  True, but it did take quite a few years to surface.  :D
