Alloy rims question
« on: September 02, 2008, 05:49:21 pm »
Been doing searches in the forum for half an hour, not having any luck getting this particular question addressed.

The question: Were alloy rims available on the early models of the CB 750 as an option from the factory?  I'm sure you could have ordered a set on the aftermarket, but were they available from Honda?

The CR kits came with them, right?

Thanks for any assistance.

There were no factory options to the streetbikes. I worked in a Honda dealership at the time in the parts department. There were the CR parts, which were virtually unobtainable. They seem to be more available now than then.  I don't recall if rims were part of the CR Kit, but I think the Daytona CR750s had them, with shoulders.

You are right they were available on the aftermarket. later models had the DID shoulderless rims in aluminum.

I was just a kid at the time so if anyone knows better, I'll defer.

The only 750s that came with aluminum rimmed spoked wheels were the first year or two Autos (19" front, 17" rear).  To the best of my knowledge, there was never a factory option for an aluminum rim on the other bikes.  There were of course aftermarket options. The 77/78 F models and the late autos used Comstar wheels which have aluminum parts . . . .The alloy spoked DID rims used on the autos are identical to the rims used on the first year or two of the GL1000.  They are also identical in size to the DID steel rims used on the 77/78Ks.  Hope this helps.

In case anyone was wondering -
Stock CB750 steel rim complete front wheel - 11.2 lbs
Goldwing front wheel w/ alloy rim - 8.9 lbs
Everything else being equal, the D.I.D. alloy rim on the gl1000 saves 2.3 lbs of precious rotating weight.
I bought a complete pair in great condition w/ 3 rotors off ebay for $175 shipped. The front wheel is a direct swap. Hoping to recoup some money selling the rotors. Still waffling on whether to use the rear rim or not. I need to do more research on pro's and con's of different rim sizes.

Speaking of alloy rims, will the Goldwing/750A aluminium rims work with 750 hubs and spokes for the chrome rims?
Spoke part numbers are different, different length maybe?

The # of holes should be the same but the spoke length should be different. Mine definitely is as my 750f has an 18" rim while the gl has a 17". I understand Buchannans can set you up w/ the correct spoke length.
Does anyone know, generally, if a 17" rim w/ a fatter tire weighs more or less than an 18" rim w/ a more standard sized tire?

My 77 has a 17 inch rim and when I was searching the Automatic I learned that they should work according to one thread.
