Rear Rim Size
« on: September 22, 2005, 06:49:22 PM »
Hey Guys,
Did all years/models of the 750 have 18 inch rims on the rear wheel? A couple of the manuals I've checked seem to indicate that, but mine came with a 17 incher. Ay ideas as to what it came off of?

I think the 77/78 "K" came with a spoked 17 inch rear wheel fitted with a 4.50 x 17 dunlop as per the goldwing
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

so i apologize for bringing this thread back from the super dead (4 years?!) but i was wondering if a 17" rim/hub from the 77/78 K would fit on a 71 axle/swingarm?

Not stock sir. . . 77/78Ks and the spoked wheeled autos all use 17 rims as stock.

Wouldn't that make it a 78 A then? and not a K?

Huh??  Reread please . . . .Your 78K has a non stock rear wheel if it is an 18". All 77ks and 78Ks came stock with 17" rear spoked wheels.  The auto's (750A) used spoked wheels (17" rear, 19" front) for at least the first year and I believe at some point (78 maybe) switched to Comstars.  The auto's spoked rims however were alloy DIDs rather than the chrome steel DIDs used on the Ks.

So I'm not actually that worried about what size the rim really is, I'm mostly just concerned if the hub (drum brake one) and associated axle bits are the same. Will it fit onto my 71 axle correctly? i feel like this is a dumb question and that the answer is yes, but i wanted to check before i bought the wheel....

No answer, but suggestion is to go to a vendor site like bike bandit and compare part numbers. Sometimes you can get such an answer.

If the model years are far apart, sometimes there are updates to the part which are not material, but change the part number and that doesn't help.

That was a good suggestion that i hadn't thought of. I went to bike bandit, and they are different part numbers. other stuff is too, including the axle and spacer things. So I'm sort of concerned. Would it be possible to lace a later rim to an earlier hub? they are all a 40 spoke pattern, but do they have different spoke angles or something weird that would prevent it from working? thanks! Ned.

If you buy a rim and spokes to size from a vendor like Buchanans and tell them what hub you are lacing it to, they will drill it appropriately and cut the spokes to the proper length. Other than that you're on your own.
