Got my 550 for free, well, more like bartered for it.  He was moving and needed help packing.  I traded a day of packing for his bike.  Quite honestly, he didn't have room for it on the truck anyway, so he would have prolly abandoned it if i didn't take it.  It had electrical problems and a few other challenges that he didn't want to tackle.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

In 2006 I paid $300... or was it $350... ??? for a  1975 Cb750 K5 that had been sitting under a fire escape for 11 years.  It was a basket case with +6 over forks and ape-hangers. The PO took off the carbs, tank and misc parts and threw them in a box with some other cb parts mixed in for good measure.  I took off the forks and returned it to mostly stock w/ a few aftermarket parts like a Dunstall seat.  I probably put $1500 into consumables and parts for it since then.  Once I get some machining done to the motor and rebuild it I'm hoping it'll be good for another 30+years.  On the downside, I keep thinking of other things to do to it while I wait to rebuild the motor so it'll most likely take me 30+ years to finish it at the rate I'm going

'72 CB750K     paid $450 for it about a year ago....didn't run - didn't take much to get it going.
Currently it's blown apart, frame etc at powdercoaters - should get by this Friday !!!!
Still have to scrounge a few more parts.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

while filling up my cb 450 two years ago i spotted a heavy cb750  inside the gas stations repair shop.
i asked the shop owner if it was for sale and he said no. the old guy that owned it loved it and would not part with it.
almost a year later i drove by the shop and was shocked to see it outside with a blue tarp over it.
i pulled in and asked again. this time the guy took my number and said he'd call me if the bike was for sale.
about 2 months later the phone rings. long story short- the owner had a stroke and could no longer ride. the shop owner said 800.  i told him i could do 600.   the smoke cleared at 700.oo and i was the new owner of a 77 cb 750k.
my dream had begun.  now it was time to get this lady skinny!
don't take me too seriously.

The guy paid me $50.00 just to get it out of his basement
although it was in 3 baskets and a bucket plus the frame.

It was fun to spend the years of trying different styles from stock to cafe

In my case, I'm scared to add it all up!

Jonesy,
Don't go there, PLEASE! I used to keep my parts receipts, now I just shred them. It's easier that way.
Cheers,
Cliff.

Not to hijack this thread but talking to the wife about needing some parts and her reaction at times reminds of a friend of mine's conversation with his wife. He wanted a new boat, she wanted a new fridge and stove. He got the boat and it was promptly  named "FYFAS".    F**k Your Fridge And Stove.     They are still happily married and still boating. Now that's a woman with a sense of humour. Fotunately my wife has been quite good about it too but feels a new kitchen and bath should be next in line.
Cheers,
Cliff.

i've been thinking about just that, but i think most people just don't wanna think about that. if my wife knew how much i spent on "that dam bike" i might end up sleeping in the shed with it.

Mine was free from my wife's uncle with one exception:  I can never sell it.  So I'm turning it into a cafe racer!   ;D

I try to keep tabs on my builds...
With the bought parts list, and original parts still used.. no problem.

But I tend to loose track when i start selling parts i'm not going to use on my bike.
Some of the bikes I buy end up free(with leftover parts) or nearly free.
I think I like modifying them more than riding sometimes.

I try to stick to a set limit I will spend on a bike.
About 3.00/cc is where i start seriously rethinking the priority of parts I want.
(need is another thing)

Fortunately, My wife has a bike too, so if she balks at how much I spend on my bike I gently reminder her of the top-end engine rebuild, porting, etc. I did to her bike....  ;D

in 2006 i paid $400 for my new 77' cb750k it was like mint when i got it and only needed some tlc so now i fixed it up and i'm back on the road again :)

i got my 76 750f for free! after meeting my then girlfriend's(now my wife) dad, he said something about having an old bike in his garage. i already had my k3 and think that the first time i met my father in law the wife and i were on the bike. he said that his bike was an old 750, i ahd to go check it out. it was parked behind a 70 olds cutlass 4 door that wasnt mobile. i could only see half of the bike. i also really hadnt known what the f model was all about.  he said i could have it if i could get it out. its now mine and in my garage(the shop). ready for me to go to town. cant wait, just need the time.
