midnights college budget build.....(updated:02/18/2010)
« on: December 09, 2008, 04:38:13 PM »
Hey guys, I am relatively new here. I recently bought a CB750F that was as termed by a member to be a "Bitsa." The bike is a 1976 CB750F with a 1978 CB750K motor in it. One of the original owners did a four corners ride and blew the original motor out and replaced it with the 78. The carbs are from the 76 F and various other things were swapped with 78 parts.  The bike was bought as a non-runner for $450. The non-running part was quickly fixed the day after buying it. However, I was having idle problems that are possibly due to carbs. So in that spirit, I decided it would be a good bike to do the whatever I wanted to do to it as it doesn't hold any value as a numbers matching bike.

The plan (now):
- I am currently in college and away from home where all my metal working tools are. (grinders, welders, plasma cutter, acetylene torch, etc..) So for the time being the bike will be getting a once over and all the parts cleaned up. I will be doing a top end build on the motor and carb rebuild so that the bike is ridable and looking better than when it was bought. I will be making my own seat, adding clip-ons, upgrading the master cylinder to a newer model one. (my master cylinder is leaking like a faucet and have heard horror stories of rebuilding them). Stainless braided brake lines will be added ( mine are rotted and cracked). as well as doing some other little touches that will make the bike look better.

The plan (future)
- Completely tear down the bike for a second time and do a complete all-inclusive build on it. I will chop all unnecessary brackets off the frame as well as weld in new bracing. I plan on upgrading to either a CBR100RR or R1 front end including brakes. I will also either adapt a Rear end off of one of those bikes or make a new rear end to utilize the wider set up and braking. Wire wheels will be fitted to keep with the theme. Once the frame and suspension is take care of the engine will receive a COMPLETE rebuild. I am still up in the air if I want to do a complete hotrod engine (836 kit, lightened crank, CR carbs, cam, flow the heads, etc.....) or do a mild build. I am leaning towards the hotrod engine to go with the suspension. Once that all is done I will do lots of body mods. I will make my own seat pan, rear fender, front fender out of carbon fiber And will do a carbon fiber overlay on the tank. These parts will not be bare carbon, they will be painted with some carbon showing through in some pattern. Other things will be added to the list once I start riding it and figuring out what I want to change on the bike.

I have worked on cars my entire life but this is my first build on a bike. I will be looking for help from you guys when I run into a problem with part interchangeability and just help in general. I look forward to sharing the first "college budget" build with you guys and eventually sharing the "all-inclusive" build with you all.

Let the picture posting begin.....

How she looked when I bought her.....

The problem....

The teardown...

My new favorite tool...

I am currently on the cleaning and reassembly process. I will get some pictures up later of the cleaned up frame and where it stands right now. I have to order order my carb parts (hondaparts-direct) and top end gasket set (Cycle-exchange). I will be going home for the winter break so progress will come to a halt until I get back on the 5th. hopefully I will have the gaskets and parts ready to go when I get back and I will get her together quickly once the motor is together.

Tell me what you think.  Cheers!

This build should be sweet! This is very similar to what I have done in the past and am doing now. I look forward to seeing it progress.

the "college budget" one will be a nice looking bike but will not be the full on "all-inclusive"  build that i have planned for the bike. i wish i had all my stuff here so that i could just build it the way that i want to. some times you cant have everything you want.

As far as the high idle...it's probably air leaks around the carb boots

Sweet build gotta ask though What was the red bike shown in one of the pics? Also just a suggestion why not look at running a GSXR front end on this? Take a look at Squirleys build on here. He used a Gixxer front end and an HD hub and was able to run spokes and have modern suspension and braking with not that much work as compared to doing an R1 front end.

That was another idea that i was given. the carb-head insulators will be replaced hopefully fixing that problem.

Dark rider... that is exactly what I am looking for. I have been doing research on what front ends swap the easiest. I didnt know that the GSXR front end swapped easier. I will take a look at squirleys build and see what he has going on.

as for the red thing in the background..... that is my ride to classes.

40mph - 85MPG and pretty dang fun to flick around in the corners due to its low weight. It will be getting a big bore kit sometime next year probably. should do around 50-60

Good luck with the build.  As a fellow college student and bike builder it does take time.  It usually seems when I have time to work on the bike I have no money, and when I have money I have no time!  Looking forward to watching your build.

I hear you on that Kmart.... Its going to be a little while before i get all the parts I need to do the build. so I want to have a bike that looks good and runs good to hold me over till then. Not to mention that when you ride or drive something and you are thinking about modifying it you always think of things that you wouldn't have when you are riding it.

Another broke-ass college student for the win! And I agree, the cheap impact driver has saved my life and sanity countless times.

Good luck with the rest of the project!

When I got my 750 running for the first time I couldn't get the idle down. I believe the carbs were running out of gas and was pulling air in through the bowl vents due to a stopped up petcock.

But I noticed as soon as the idle hits 2000rpm it jumps waaay up, I think because the spark is advancing.

You may want to check and see if the spark advance is stuck or sticky.

Now that is a sweet find. Take this as you may...but i think that bike would look great if it was redone in the same paint scheme as you got it. Perhaps replacing the neon green with british racing green with the white stripe down the center.

i cant pull my self to do it. its going to be mostly black. when it gets the money put into it that it deserves it will be black with carbon fiber showing through and red accents breaking up the transition.

Looks good man, keep it up. I also am a former college student, but I didn't have a garage. I had to haul my dirtbike up the front stairs into the house I was in.... it sat in my bedroom ha ha ha. I probably have a pic of it in my bedroom somewhere around here. I can definitely relate to the time/money issue.

Thanks for the compliment.... I just recently got a garage so I'm a lot happier. I'm used to being back home where I have a huge 3 car garage, heat, exhaust vents, any tool you can think of at my disposal. I look forward to doing the full build and sharing it with you guys.

I may be wrong but that motor looks like an F not a K since it is all black unless someone painted it or did honda start painting them all black?  Good luck with the build by the way, I'm also a poor college student trying to get my own project going.
