I would have done David Silver Spares for $7.50 but I was hoping to get it before this weekend, so I ordered from BikeBandit for $10.82.

I found it at a couple other places in the US for $8.50 or $9 but shipping was $9-$15.

Progress! I'm on a roll.

Frame up on the lift:

Triple-trees, new tapered bearings installed, forks installed, and brake caliper reassembled and installed:

Front wheel painted and unmasked:

And my ace-in-the-hole...

RIM STRIPES!

Front:

and rear:

Rear wheel mounted:

Other side:

I used tapered bearings from Pyramid Parts (I bought them on eBay along with fork seals for three of my bikes). They fit perfectly and didn't require any extra spacers. I had the foresight to order a new lower washer a while back which turned out to be a good idea since the old washer was toast.

I put the outer bearing races in the freezer for a few days and when it was time they popped right into the neck without too much drama. I used a small hammer and a block of wood to drive them in.

I did realize that I left out the lower dust seal, I think it got tossed with the old bearings. Now I'm kicking myself because I see they're only $2 on BikeBandit, and I could have ordered a new one with my front bearing retainer if I'd been thinking.

The stock shocks are just there temporarily until my CB900f shocks come in.

Looking at the list:
Quote
Work left before it's rolling again:
- Finish second fork tube
- Finish polishing valve cover
- Put engine back into frame
- Paint front rim
- Install new steering bearings
- Sand spot putty on headlight ears (filled in old reflector holes) and paint black

- Reassemble front end (triple trees, brake, wheel, fender, etc.)
- Reinstall swingarm (still waiting on some CB900f shocks)
- Reinstall centerstand (sure it's ugly and heavy, but damn it's useful)
- Finish cleaning chain (it's been soaking in Simple Green) and install new master link (lucky find at the hardware store)

- Reinstall handlebars

I started on cutting apart the chain to install the new master link but then I realized it was 11:45PM and people were trying to sleep, so I turned in for the night.

Overall, I'm excited with how it's turning out - the rim stripes look even better than I'd hoped. Let's hope the rest of the bike looks as good.

Well now I just can't wait to go home for lunch-

Rumor is my bearing retainer, clutch lever, and kickstarter are all coming in the mail today. With some luck, the shocks will show up today, too (they shipped via UPS Ground on the 5th, I think 6 days is long enough...). I think the HID kits are coming tomorrow, which sucks because I'm going to be gone all weekend and I don't want $110 worth of HID kits sitting on my front doorstep. I'll have to have my sister stop by and pick it up for me.

I just ordered some SS braided brake lines from Slingshot Cycles, pampadori here on the forums. When ordering from his website, the coupon code "SOHC4" gets you 15% off.

My clutch lever, bearing retainer, and kick starter all showed up today, so I can get the front end put together.

The clutch lever is from a CBX, like the black one here:

It's not a direct swap into the 550's left hand control, so I'll have to do a little re-fitting with the angle grinder.

With a little luck it will be rolling tonight!

Laminar, thanks for the tip on bikebandit.com and davidsilver.  Those'll be a big help - pretty cool to find bikebandit also has the schematics!

Your reassembly is going FAST!  I dig the rim stripes.  Did you paint them by hand, or are they some sort of a pinstripe?

Keep chuggin' - you're close!

The stripes were off of eBay from a seller like this one.

I was able to specify color and front and rear rim sizes, and they sent me precut stripes. I'll toss up a picture of the sheet when I get home. I'm skeptical of their durability but each set came with an extra 1/4 circumference stripe that I can use if it gets damaged.

Here's what the sheet looks like:

This was after cutting off the first 8 stripes for the rear tire.

Well UPS didn't show up with my shocks or HID kits today, and the headlight bucket/chrome ring I bought two weeks ago on eBay hasn't shown up yet, so I did what I could.

I got the front rim reassembled. The new speedo-side dust seal that came with the All Balls wheel bearings didn't fit - it was about 1.5mm too big around, so I just reused the old one. Thankfully I didn't destroy it pulling it out.

Front wheel and handlebars installed:

New master cylinder:

Modified CBX clutch lever to match the brake lever, modified to work with the 550 mount:

I repainted the areas I cut and it's drying now.

I put a coat of rust converter on the underside of the fender to stop it from rusting away, but I think I'm going to have to end up painting the fender black, as the chrome on the back of it is looking to be in pretty poor condition.

I also got my 550f kickstart lever installed:

I didn't get a chance to mount up the pegs and test it yet, though. I might have a buyer interested in the Nighthawk, so I had to give it an oil change and get it running again.

It's a generic master cylinder for a single caliper system off of eBay from Thailand. I got it from eBay seller veloaholci.

It feels good and seems okay, but I won't really know until I load it up and try it out. I'm waiting on some SS brake lines to get all of that connected, I don't want to risk spilling brake fluid all over my new paint twice.

After a long weekend in Arizona, I came home to find that my shocks arrived! Even though it was late, I still had to at least mock them up.

Also, I picked up a CB650 cam last night on eBay. Sorry if I outbid anyone here. It came down to the last two seconds.

Very nice progress!  It's really looking like something.  The box-tube reinforcing looks really beefy -- I dig it  ;D

Ha! Well the auction ended at about 12:30AM my time, so I set my alarm to wake me up a few minutes before, and I'd bid in bed via my iPod. It seems like someone else had the same idea, as there were several bids in the last 10 seconds, the final one happened to be exactly my max bid. $0.01 more and I would have lost it. Of course, last second auctions always get my heart pumping so it took forever to fall back asleep.

awesome build...
i just became a member of the forum and yours happen to catch my eye, glad i checked it out though. definitely a boost of confidence knowing someone else started a cafe build without a welder and many other useful tools. so thanks for inspiration i guess haha.

(being 18 and jobless poses difficulties in starting any sort of hobby lol, but when i start my build ill definitely have questions for you.)

Well, at least I now know who beat me in the final seconds on the CB650 camshaft auction last night!  Man, was I seeing red! >:(

Glad to know it went to someone that's soon to be riding as opposed to my "eternal tear down" stage.

Just a little bit of time to work this evening.

I got the front fender mounted.

I started the wiring and mounted the front turn signals.

The rear shocks are looking good and everything seems to fit in the electric box.

The headlight bucket I received included the chrome trim ring but not the headlight retainer, so I'm still looking for one of those. I installed the HID bulb and temporarily wired it up to the battery, it looks sweet. I can't wait to get it on the bike.

There's another one ending in a couple days. I'll try to resist bidding on it just to raise the final price.

USPS says my brake lines should be delivered today. I also picked up new acorn nuts and washers for the upper shock mounts, and I want to get the battery mounted. I'm limiting what I do around the motor (coils, carbs, clutch cable, etc.) so that I don't have to undo anything to install the cam.
