Maybe...
« on: March 09, 2009, 07:30:41 PM »
..some of you here can enjoy this picture. And maybe, just maybe, one of you can perhaps shed some light on the vehicle. It's been my background for a long while now, and I'm violently in love with this car. Take a minute to soak in all the details.

I've attached a link to the the full size image as well, as I really think it deserves it. Check it out.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ss4DQN01YyU/SV0ETWCgI8I/AAAAAAAABIo/JVfvNlwjAGI/s1600-h/2008_Road_Trip_1_146.jpg

So, besides the obvious, what can you gather from it?

I've developed a bit of a fondness for these types of machines. And I think it speaks to my motorcyclist side, open to the elements, everything needed to make the vehicle run(presumably fast, by the looks of this one), stop, and turn, but nothing else. Shoot, if I lived in a dryer climate, I'd drive something like this thing everyday. Not to mention it's just about one of the coolest flats racers I've seen.

So ok, supercharger I see, love the gauges, inline looks like, someone mentioned somewhere else it might look like a diesel, possible, I have no clue honestly on the powerplant. But dig on the rivets holding this thing together, like a WWII prop fighter decided to make offspring with a T-Bucket. What does that frame look like? Possibly hand made, again, I don't have enough information about the picture, and I'm not good enough at identifying vintage car parts. What do you folks think? Imagine if you were trying to build something similar, what would be a list of parts to compile? Not including hand made parts, which I can visually see there is a lot of.

It's a straight 8 petrol motor, it's not a diesel as it has a ignition distributor.

It may be a good idea to bring it to this guys attention, Keith is big into salt flat racing, here's his profile, you can PM him and ask, he may know the car.

Yea I'm an idiot. It was mentioned somewhere else and seemed logical only because of it's apparent chunkiness, little did I know that I just wasn't paying attention...

looks like a t-bucket with the "t" part removed.

obviously a z-ed frame. or maybe not. might just be axle over frame in the rear. was a big thing in the 50's. my grandfather had one.

body looks channeled so might be a straight frame after all. yep.... I'm a moron.

could that be a packard straight-8 Sam? with dare I say it...... a supercharger?!?!?!?!?!

woooooooweeeee that would be nice!!!

great looking machine for sure !
Could be '32 Ford wheels with their (juice brakes).
Outer body is definitely from a Model A --see gas cap on cowell (sp?).
Dual Strombergs.
Old school, as they say, but right on target.

Could it be a cut up rumble?

Spelled "cowl" - per Dictionary.com. Had me going too.

well the body is probobly late 20s but id guess not much is original.... The wheels are model T or A, can never remember. the doors are custom built as well. Those seats are "wwII era" bomber seats. or knockoffs. you can get em a bunch of places, like speedway motors. thats a 4 spoke "sprint car" steering wheel, which may or may not be original. probobly not since originals are rediculous in price. probobly a 3 on the tree trans, maybey early 60s as there still dirt cheap converted into a floor shift. that beehive oil filter is worth stupid money if original, even a re pop is several hundred dollars. it may be a straight 6 truck motor from an industrial vehicle. not a lot of top end, but tons of tourque. since there seems to be a lot of military influence id say the motors from an military vehicle. king bee headlights?

I'm not the owner nor his father...just a photographer that's shot it numerous times and come to know the owner a bit.

I wrote a bit about it on landracing.com: the rat's registered as a 1930 Ford (Model A) roadster.  I asked the question kinda pointedly cuz the body looks more like a roadster pickup, but that's not how it's listed.  Go figger.

The wheels are (I think) 30-31 Model A (19") in front and 35 Ford (16") in the rear.  The motor' s a straight 8 Packard with a McCulloch centrifugal blower on it.  A couple of years ago the owner (who really does some high quality fabrication work) told me that he couldn't run much boost cuz it'd blow oil out everywhere if he did.

Not positive on the transmission, but it's a top-shifter 3-speed (I think.)  The gauges are plumbed inline, at least the oil pressure and boost.  Frame's handbuilt and yes, it's Z'ed.  Btw, first year for hydraulic brakes on a Ford was 39...not to bust anyone's chops, but just for the sake of accuracy.  I'm not sure if that's the year of brakes on it, cuz 39-48 are pretty similar.

The owner's father who was referred to owns this rat:

This one's a Model A sedan with a Pontiac I-8 motor and 7 Strombergs on a log manifold.  (Don't tell anybody that I told ya, but at that cruise night, only 3 of 'em were connected to the linkage.)  It runs a Hydramatic trans and has the radiator mounted in the rear cooled with an electric fan.  Interior's upholstered in license plates.  The builder's known as Little Billy and both he and his son are affiliated with the As*hole Garage in Salt Lake City, Ut.  Their motto is one I've been using forever: "Better'n it Wuz."

Thanks, man.  Yes, I do plan to be at BUB as well as the Streamliner Shootout.  And if things go as planned, I'll also be at the Cycle Fest at Miller Motorsports Park to shoot that event.  I'm not gonna have press credentials for the World Superbike race, but I'll be there as a spectator.

I'll be the old fart drivin the red Suburban. Come say hi if ya get a chance while yer out on the salt.

Don't need much boost when you used to pull trains.  :D :D :D

Sigh... the days when big motors were put in gigantic cars.... I miss em.
