Which carb synch tool should I get?
« on: March 17, 2009, 09:45:24 AM »
Alright, the cheap Motion Pro carb synch tool I got a while ago sucked (literally). I want to synch my carbs with a decent tool that will be fairly accurate and durable. I don't mind spending more for the more expensive dial set if it is worth the extra moolah (it is about $100US more than the morgan). Which do you guys recommend I get?

The dial-type are cool, but calibration is always a concern.  The Morgan has most of the same advantages (no mercury, compact, can be packed away, etc.), without the calibration issue.

I've heard good things about Morgan.  You can get it to your door with a set of brass manifold adapters for $93 right now...

Am I missing something on that last post . . . . "delivered to your door now. . . ."

But really, where can you get them? Between my son and I, we have four bikes that all act like a sync job is in order.

got a deal on mercury sticks that someone had bought and never used.

as for the other sync tool.......

.... had a long skinny screwdriver. found a nutdriver with a hollow shank. cut nutdriver handle down so screwdriver would reach screw.

Morgan............if you want to be SERIOUS about synching your carbs. Gauges are finicky, mercury is BS,homemade manos are about as cheap and backwoods as you can get. If you're Serious..spend the bucks and get a Morgan Carbtune...you won't be disappointed.

i've never had a problem w/ the motion pro... i have yet to use my mercury free version that i got for christmas but, i'm sure it will work the same.

do you mean to say you sucked mercury into your carbs?  that sux!

a buddy has the morgan non-dial kind... worked well but i saw no real reason for it over the motion pro.  it tells me exactly what i need to know.  just don't rev it to the moon!   ;)

this was posted in the response section for the motion pro device...

rid your gauge of air bubbles
Hi.. I too have a Motion Pro manometer (an Hg type) and have experienced these little bubbles. .they're either air or suspended gasoline that condense from vapor introduction. purge the tubes with air until the fluid and air bubbles are gone from the metering tubes. this is basically like resetting them. they'll never migrate out of the tubes due to specific gravity and surface tension, but will once moved to the fluid tank. whether you chose to blow into the rubber line or use a VERY low (in both pressure and flow) compressed air burst, is up to you.

not trying to convince you... just help

No Heff,

I got the motion pro with the glycol solution (blue in color) in them. The last time I tried to synch the fluid just went up , up, and out (rpm's didn't bust 1000). Needless to say I was not happy so I think I'm going to go with the Morgan.

I'm pretty sure if I had Hg in my tubes it wouldn't have been sucked out too due to higher specific gravity. Someone said in a previous posting that Motion pro will send you replacement fluid for free (wonder why?) but I figure the same thing is gonna happen. Maybe I'm wrong.

threadjack?  what threadjack?

do you think the problem is user error or blue stuff vs. mercury?

No, someone else (edit: Iggy) compained about the same thing happening to them when they used it with the glycol solution. I wouldn't say user error, I followed the instructions.
I think because Hg is a lot more dense than a glycol solution it would take a lot more pressure to suck it out the tube. Also, why would Motion Pro offer you replacement fluid for free? I think they got a lot of complaints just like what happened to me.

...... look through the socket end and if you see colored plastic handle at the other - hollow shaft.

Xcelite and Indestro also have hollow handles to within about 1/4" of the end. The Stanley needed the handle drilled.

Happy trails.

Dude, Carbtune dude. Carbtune.

Fun with the Motion Pro on start with all four tubes in the 4 - 1 manifold for calibration. SUCK!

Carbtune unsynced

Synced

20 minutes... maybe. Carbtune.

Also, yes, get the brass fittings. The nylon ones are short and almost impossible to get on 2 and 3. I scavenged the brass fittings from the Motion Pro. 2 short and 2 long for 1/4 and 2/3.

I finally called them up and requested the free fluid, the guy recommended I calibrate the fluid in the lower third of the register and hook up a hemostat or some toher temporary clamping mechaism upon start up or throttle blips.

I'll give some free juice one more shot with some cut-off clamps. Who knows, might work?
