untitled frame? who cares...
« on: March 18, 2009, 10:50:58 AM »
I bought an untitled frame before, all I did was swap out the plate on the neck and viola! it's my bike!!
Nobody in the DMV office is going to give a sh!t, they just want your money.

When I titled my cafe, they didn't even ask to see the bike, it could've been an unsafe wreck with a wooden frame, and no lights.

or is that just in my state?
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Wait till you go to a biker party, with a roadcheck..

and get to see your bike swinging to & fro, not too carefuly slung.. as the towtruck drives away... :o

personally I could not bother to try to ride on the road a  bike that is not clean... let alone put money or time into it..

IL doesn't even check engine numbers. Which I have several titles that used the engine number instead of the neck number!!!  :o

Our biggest thing here is making sure that the title isn't a salvage. Other than that you technically could place any plate on any bike and as long as it's relatively close.... the cops here don't check jack.

I always liked it when we used to ride through roadblocks in WI and have a little Kawasaki 305 title with a giant 1493cc kz1000 motor in it. Made the cops go...... whaaaaaaat??? ;D

biker party with a road check.   ???  WTF

if i ever end up at a biker party where cops are checkin' bikes... i'll just turn around and ride the other way!  does this happen often in canada?

also, i don't think he was saying his bike was unsafe... just not the same VIN as it used to be  ;)  no problemo here!  tell me how anyone would ever know the difference!?... as long as the job is done painstakingly well.

That's no biker party I would care to attend. I say go for it, most agencies could care less with bikes of this vintage. I personally like to have a title, makes business a lot easier.

he wasn't saying the bike was unsafe, he was saying the way the tow truck driver slung it up was.

I have a set of letter and number punches, so if they wanted to go by engine numbers I could change them in a jiffy with a dremel and sandblaster.
looks like its OEM when its done.

you can put the vin plate on but the frame number is also stamped into the neck on the other side.

I don't know about other states but the "legal" path to getting a title lacking bike back on the road is really not that big of a deal here. Which is fine by me since I can ofter use it to knock down the price much more than the time/effort of getting the title is worth.

And for the roadblock checks, I almost accidentally stumbled onto one while on my way to Sylvan Beach in NY. Considering I had no high-low/kill switch/horn/signals I decided to find an alternate route. I did always wonder what would have happened.

Yeah I should have said bar mounted kill switch. The key is not exactly in an easy to reach place. Oh, and my throttle did stick once with that bike  ;D

Fuzzy has the right idea, having a data tag not match the numbers beside it, is not hard to pick out.

Re-stamp? most number systems on a lot of bikes have odd fonts on a few numbers. The bike squads here tend to figure those things out.. besides if the think they are iffy, they just take it away. If it turns out kosher, you might get it back in a year..

Usually they acid test the engine numbers, any underneath tend to pop up. Any molding or paint over the numbers, no problem, they just strip it off.

The RCMP has a special squad that usually follows the bike clubs around, the 1%ers.

I dont know how you could ride a bike & not end up at bike events? Also I was a director of A.I.M. for a few years, you tend to attend parties that you put on.. at least most people do..

Maybe some of you stick close to home, but I sure dont need any grief over numbers when I am 1500 miles from home..

you were the director of Aol Instant Messenger, what's that have to do with bikes?
 :D ;D ;D
and why would I ride my bike 1500 miles, when my car has A/C, heated seats, and a supercharger?

special squads? acid tests? what is this, C.S.I. miami? Is that douche bag Horatio there too?
I'm full of zingers today ::)
I bet this is how it goes-
they see a guy on a bike with an out of state tag and they say "hey lets go see if we can screw some cash out of this guy. and while we're at it, lets f#*k the locals too!
then they all hi-five and make out.

cops are like mattress salesmen, dirty, low down, no good scum bags.
I pretty much keep to my self, I don't do shows, and there's no reason for cops to mess with bikers out here if they're just "riding within the law". (not smiling)

sorry, I ranted again.

Maybe that's what it is,  make sure if there's cops around, you NEVER smile.
They're like the T-rex in that respect- they can't see you if you're not smiling.

He's such a poser. That's all he does is pose. Sometimes its a single handed pose, sometimes its a double handed pose. When he is feeling brave, he'll remove his sunglasses prior to posing.
My wife loves that stupid show.

 Back to the title debate.
Personally, I prefer my bikes to be completely legit. If its 1500 mikes away from home or 1500 feet away from home, a "shady" bike could be a problem just waiting to happen. I would have left the VIN tag on the correct titled frame and put all the stuff from the non-titled frame to it.
Even doing that is shady, but less shady than moving the VIN plate to the untitled frame.

what if your titled frame was twisted, and all you needed was a frame?
I don't agree with the "laws" that get you in trouble, even if your not hurting anyone.

I say "laws" in quotes because of my strong desire for a zombie apocalypse, and the collapse of civilized government.
