If you had 21 days vacation...
« on: March 30, 2009, 05:35:45 PM »
In my job I will be working 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off.  That's about 2 weeks.  Used right I could have 21 days off.   I figure a long bike trip is in order. I need suggestions on what to see. Cadillac Ranch?  http://www.libertysoftware.be/cml/cadillacranch/crmain.htm   Carhenge? http://www.carhenge.com/  Tail of the Dragon? http://www.tailofthedragon.com/
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

There are many great places to visit.  Maybe try not to cram too much into one trip.  Pick a few destinations and go.

I personally would like to see the Hoover Dam, and maybe some of the desert cliffs near Utah.  Maybe squeeze in the Grand Canyon, and Meteor Crater in Arizona since I'd be in that neck of the woods.  Also leave open some spur-of-the-moment site-seeing time.

Although... you have 21 days... that's a long time!  Jeez, you could do a cross-country thing.

Cross country is the idea. I used to be a truck driver and most of my time was spent east of the Mississippi. I've been to a few places some 15 years ago on a family vacation, Mount Rushmore, Carhenge, and the Badlands are three I can remember. I would like to make the west coast and see something I haven't seen before.

BTW, I live in Indiana.

Cross-country is easy in 21 days.

In 2001 I took 12 days from Boston to San Francisco (4000+ miles). In 2004 we did the Easy Rider SOHC Trip going from LA to Grand Canyon to Monument Valley to New Mexico/Colorado to Texas/Arkansas/Louisiana/New Orleans and back to Boston, MA - 5500 miles, 16 days on a CB750K4.

Go on you know you want to!

cheers
Andy

You could hit the west coast and the Pacific Coast Highway.  I think it starts in Washington or Oregon and goes through California along the coast.  Here is a Wiki on the California part.  Looks beautiful.

We did 4900 miles in 14 days this past August. Year before 4300 miles in 20 days. If you travel fairly close to home I'd suggest a loop that will let you sight see all along the route. If you plan a farther route I'd suggest 1 way balls to the wall and the other way a slow sight seeing ride.

One suggestion from Indiana might be a fast ride along I-70 to the Rocky Mountains. Zig zag your way through the Rockies (MUCH to see), cross over from Glacier Park to Waterton Park in Canada and ride the Canadian Rockies then head home along CA1 and loop around the Great Lakes.

Don't know that I'd try the pacific Coast Hwy from IN with 3 weeks but it's doable. That's be one helluva loop that I could help you with.

East of the Mississippi for 3 weeks, cruise around the Great Lakes, cross over in Canada, work your way over to Maine and visit New England. I lived in KY most of my first 47 years and in Colorado since and have found that western US riding is SO much more superior. Open roads, open spaces, less people and traffic, way more grandeur.

Something to consider also, instead of having a set well know destination sometimes some of the coolest places are the remote, barley traveled back roads. You would be surprised at what you could find.

Hwy 191 from Clifton to Eager in SE AZ is one of the most fantastic motorcycle roads in the country.  It rides form hot, terrible badland country writhing and twisting up into Pine then Aspen meadows.
The area around ShowLow is great for it's open meadows and aspen forest, and all of Southern Utah with names like 'Canyonlands', 'Capitol reef', 'Zion National Park', 'Arches' (some towns in Utah are dry, bring your own potables).  Blanding and Moab Utah carry you into the Rockies: Gunnison, Telluride, Crested Butte, Summit County... Heading up into Yellowstone, Glacier, Banff, Calgary.

Make sure its a summer ride  ;)

Go left, then take 2 rights.
Let us know when you decide where you end up going.

I have only flown over the west side of the Mississippi, so I can't give  you any good advice.

Make it a point to NOT hit any interstate on your trip. Too much beautiful two lane out there begging to be ridden.

I would just like to point out:

With a schedule like that theres really no limit to where you could go.

Literally around the World.

All it would take is pre planning. Specifically finding somewhere to store your bike till the next time your off and transportation back to your home/Job.

With a two week schedule....you could talk various people into short term storage. Bike shops, board members etc.

Then you go to work....come back...pick up ya bike and ride some more.

See everything before you die  ;D

I know that! As a trucker I got lost a few times and ended up on back roads and saw some interesting places I would have liked to explore, mostly abandoned buildings.  Stay off the interstates...  I don't think I could do that for the whole trip.
