Author Topic: What's the secret of the Master Link clip? (Read 2057 times)

My gosh I think Im going to go crazy. Got my new sprockets and chain today. Sprockets went on in 5 minutes. Chain, 2 hours and still working on it. No matter how much I squeeze with my vice grips, c-clamps, I cannot get this freaking clip on the masterlink. Im squeezing it on both ends and still no success.

Any tips before I convert my bike into a shaft drive?

needlenose visegrips on each end to set the link

when you see the grooves in the posts you know the clip will work

then the clip should slide on

it is directional so the tails face away from the direction of rotation

it shouldn't be that hard

sometimes it just depends on the chain....I got a cheap jc whitney chain and it was real headache...then i replaced the masterlink with a little better quality one and it slipped right on

"Shouldnt be that hard?" hahaha I know. I helped my friend last year with his chain and it only took a few minutes. I think Texaninseattle is onto something since this is a JC Whitney chain...

I'll just keep working at it.

Depends on your chain.
My 530 requires a press to put on a clip and a master link.

You have to be a "chain master" it takes years of school'n to be the master of the chain

on a serious note:

I had some trouble with mine so i bought a rivit type link... only i didnt have a chain rivit installer... so i ordered one... (i have a 630 chain) so as soon as it arrived my master link just went on with no probelm

i think i scared it by ordering the tool

OH ya i did have to get a PRESS its a "C" clamp looking thing but instead of being a regular bolt it has a HOLE in the end of the bolt... to go round the rivit with the notches in it

DONT heat the plate up on a O-ring or X-ring chain....

you need the special tool i think ~~Parts-N-More or Z1~~ has it it was well worth it...

it helps to have the right tools for the job it makes doing it later easier and knowing that you have the right tool for the job makes you feel good and not like your doing it half assed

Heres from the Diamond chain FAQ describing master links, sounds like you have a press-fit side plate:

Slip-fit, the most common and most popular, are provided for general chain applications and allow the easy slip fit assembly of the cover plate over the pin ends. This slip fit construction does not have the same integrity found in the assembled chain and can reduce the chain's working load capacity by as much as 30%.

Press-fit connecting links are provided when the integrity of the connecting link needs to be equal to that of the base chain. This design utilizes pitch holes in the cover plate that are smaller than the chain pins, requiring the user to press the cover plate onto the pins before installing the spring clip or cotter. While more difficult to install this type of connection provides the greatest load carrying capability.

How are the presses different from a c-clamp? I really torqued the crap out that c-clamp. There's gotta be a big difference in tools. I'll have to order a press.

+1 ... I fought for so long buying the Motion Pro chain tool because of the price but so glad I finally did, it's expensive but solves the entire problem. I also went to rivit style masters only ... easy to install and more durable.

the tool from mike is only $5 it was well worth the $$$$ (or $) its basicly a "c" clamp only the back side has a "divit" and that bolt has a HOLE in the center for the link to go through... my chain went on NO PROB!!! with that $5 tool.... heck i coudlnt even make one for that kind of money!

YUP!!!

its for the master link rivit the kind that looks like it goes on easy but doesnt (its actually tappered)

MY X-ring RK chain (630 88link) had that style master link...it came with a regular master link (straight rivit type) but i wanted my chain to be removeable... sorta.... it removes just with some elbow grease... i still have the rivit link but i dont like those.

BELT drive... now thats an idea i would like to see on the 750 if it breaks you can stop by any harley shop and get a "temp" belt to get you home....

No its not...that tool will not do a Rivet master link.

Here is the tool that I have, does everything very well. The rivit links are a 2 minute install and very secure/safe.
