( and may need to get a new battery after all, i let the little B&D charger that I bought go for about 3hr and it still wasnt fully charged...anyone know how long this should take?)

Taking its own sweet time to charge is a good sign.  The nearly dead battery that charges in an hour or two are the ones you need to worry about.  Giver 'er over night
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Well done!  Based on your symptoms (needing to hold throttle open to start/run, won't idle, 1&2 not firing) sounds to me like your carburetor slow jets are clogged.  :)

I would agree here, I think a carb rebuild would be an excellent idea.

The reason for putting your hand ver the carb while turning it over is to maker a suction that will pull fuel through the needle valve and could clear an obstruction. I ran lectrons on our Jr dragsters which had a finiky needle and seat. I used this trick several times to clear a leaking carb after starting it and finding fuel leaking from the overflow. ;D

There are free manuals in the FAQ section. You should just start reading the FAQ section. I have read and read FAQs just to absorb it all.
