cloning roses
« on: May 10, 2009, 11:49:03 PM »
Hey All,
Any one here clone roses? I'm trying for the first time. I've got these Paul McCartney roses that smell wicked and super strong. The plant need's to be moved and i was wanting more. I got some root hormone powder and planting them in the morning. I hope this works I'll never pay for another rose plant again.  :)

hi paul,
i have some experience with cloning, generally just taking a cutting, dipping it in rooting solution and planting it will not work.
usually you will need to keep the cutting in a humidity and temp controlled environment until roots form (usually 2-3 weeks) or they will just dry out
its tricky until you get the hang of it, too much heat and humidity and mold will form, too little and they will dry out
i usually try to keep them around 75-85% humidity and around 75-85 degrees
feel free to ask questions, good luck, let us know how it goes

I swear man, there are the most INTERESTING people on this forum!

If I ever needed to find out about breeding mongooses (mongeese?  :D) or finding out the best way to burn old tires, this would be the first place I'd ask  ;D

Try this.  Take a cutting and dip it in rooting hormone.  Put the cutting in a pot just barley damp.  Put the pot in a clear plastic bag.  Put a stick in the bag to keep the bag up off the cutting.  Blow your breath into the plastic bag and seal off the top. (I just twist tied it and folded the end over again and twist tied it again)  Put it under your work bench or somewhere dark but warmish.  A month later take one out and gently pull up the cutting.  You might find a root.  If you don't, leave the other cuttings where they are.  Try again at 6 and 8 weeks.  If that doesn't work come back here and ask us again or try another kind of plant.  I live in the northwest and stopped growing roses after I moved here.  As a friend once said, roses just look like a wet kleenex on a stick.  It works for me.

Keep this in mind.  If you are taking your cuttings off of a grafted plant you will get the roots of the cutting.  Most grafts are taken from plants with poor roots (subject to rot or desease) and grafted to a good rootstock.  If you have grafted plants you will have to later graft your cuttings onto a good rootstock.

A ganja.  What's a ganja.  Something I saw at the Kawasaki display at the bike show?

I have cloned before, but not roses. I was the most successful by using an alcohol sterilized razor and making a 45 degree angle cut of the stem. I then cut the stem in half, long ways about an inch and shaved the outside of the stem very carefully and dipped immediately into rooting hormone. I planted the clone in rock wool. The best container to use is a humidity dome with vents on top for adjustment. All plants are different but I only had to wait about two weeks under 24 hours of florescent light a day for tons of roots. Root hormone and cloning solution for watering is a plus. The better your "mother" the better the clone. The better clone the better the plant. Good luck, it may take you a few times but you will get it.

Yeah yeah, roses my ass  ;)

Just put the "rose" seeds between layers of damp paper towels and when they sprout plant the new "rose" bushes. The buds, er tops, are probably the best part to work with since thats where the active cambium layers are that sprout roots. (not sure if I remembered the correct terminology-been way too many years) I've heard that 400w metal halide lights work well to "illuminate" the sprouts so you can "see" them easily. Perhaps you should grow indoor hydroponic "roses".

Derek, I might have to come visit again if your experiment works. Rastapumpks. I believe I found the right border crossing this last time too.
