Ok, so I'm finally back (again  ;)). After lots of moving, working and misc life junk I'm finally able to start on the bike yet again. I have it rolling and running, just waiting on some funds to buy parts (brakes, etc). And now since I know how much you enjoy them, a video for you of the bike running for the first time in over a year   :D

One problem that I'm running into right now though is my kickstand. With the drag pipes I can't raise it and it seems very unstable. Any alternatives that would take minimum modification? I don't have access to a welder :(

Heat it up with a torch, and bend it where it needs to go.

Those Flanders bars?

Looks good.... but the grips kinda look out of place?? Not sure.

The bars are actually 2 separate pieces. I had a set of stock bars off a parts bike that were bent so I cut them up to make those. It's more of an experiment in design right now more than anything, if I decide to go that route then I'll get some tubing and bend it to create a single bar. The grips I had laying around an had just thrown them on there to see what they'd look like.

Wow.... hadn't noticed that.  :D

My opinion?   Make slugs to weld in the ends of the bars. That way there can be no "crimping" of the bar ends at the clamps.

Very cool man.

So I recently traded someone my 4-4 drag pipes for a set of 4-2 that came off of a '78F. I've played with every header/collector combo that there is with this set and this is what I've come up with finally:

Header pipes lined up

Another shot of the headers

This is where I'm scratching my head. The hangers are designed to go on the passenger peg brackets, yet the end of the pipes aren't lined up when there's a bolt through the hanger. Is this how 4-2s normally look when mounted to the bike? I'll get some side shots tomorrow.

On a completely different not, I pulled the exhaust and put my bike up on the lift to pull my forks (they need new seals). Since I already had them off I took one of the apart to measure the tube. I knew that they looked slightly longer than stock, but I didn't realize that they were.....

... wait for it ....

29 inches long!! So now I'm hoping that I have a set of standard forks in storage...... :-\

*Laughs Maniacally*

IT'S ALIVE!!!

Today is a day 3 years in the making  ;D For the first time since I've owned it my bike moved under it's own power. Rode it to the end of the block and back. Still needs lots of work, but I'm excited so I thought I'd share.

Well, looks like I got excited a little too early. Dropped my oil pan last night to check the screen on my oil pump. Once the pan came off I found 2 metal chunks and what appears to be a retaining ring for one of the bearings.  :'(  So last night I unbolted/disconnected everything I needed to so I can pull the motor once again. Gonna throw it on the bench, tear it down completely and see what's going on in there. I know that this forum is gonna be invaluable during this process, making a parts list as we speak. I'll get pictures up a little later this evening of the pieces I found.

I know I've been slow on the updates, but have been getting some work done. Finally got the cases split earlier today and guess what I found.....

Yup, those would be ball bearings  :(

...and the shattered bearing that they came out of  >:(

Other half of the case just looks like it needs a good cleaning.

Upper half of engine that I've been trying to get cleaned up. Thinking about getting all of the parts hot tanked, anyone done this with good results?

So now I'm looking to source bearings (going to replace all that need it of course). Need to start ordering parts on my next check.

Damn bad luck! >:(

These are the times when most would give up.......I would urge you to have patience and do what you can, when you can.

This bike is DYING for some cafe work....clubman's, a 'glass seat with bumstop, and some 4-2's or 4-1 exhaust.

Cafe this bike.....it will love you for it! ;) :D

There's no way I'm giving up on this, if I do I won't have the motivation to rebuild the other 2 motors I have and put them in the pile of parts I have in storage :D.
As for the look, I like the looks of that cafes and am doing something similar but not quite.

So yesterday I dropped off parts at the machine shop. I took them to a very reputable shop in the area that has experience working with aluminum. $60 for the jugs, head and both halves of the case. So while I'm waiting for them to be finished I need to source bearings and start work on a couple things I wanna do to the rest of the bike. I plan on moving my electrics under the tank (except the battery of course) and I wanna fab up a plate holder/brake light. More pics to come soon  ;D

So I know it's been awhile since I updated, been caught up in other things. HOWEVER, there has been good news. Went in on Fri and got the title, tags and insurance for the bike. Have made lots of progress on the bike itself, will be posting pics this evening. I ended up swapping the broken motor for another one that I had lying around the garage. Now I just need to source new tires and tubes (hopefully for less than the $80 a piece that I've already been quoted).

WooHoo!!! Just ordered a new front and rear tire from AMT, $82 shipped for a set of Duros. The reviews on them were good enough that I felt they would work till I could save up for some better ones.
