Try a bulk plan for sovent or Varsol.

That type of partswasher is pretty dirty, compared to say the Saftey Kleen type.

I think they are hard on pumps anyway and low on volume... low price..short life..

Thanks, 754. Mine is the floor standing HF model, more like the Safety Kleen type, but it's still Low Price... and probably Short Life. Anyway, I'm so used to cleaning parts by brush in a plastic concrete mixing pan that I'm not sure I'll ever use the HF parts cleaner.  ::)  RR

Mine is a floor stander.

It's this guy only the colors are darker on the one pictured...  http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=7340

The pump is really simple and will be easy to replace with a nice GE or similar when the time comes. It's okay for the chicks I date.

I've got one like that in my garage Ricky, I've had it for 18 years now and it still works fine, I've used Kerosine, diesel fuel, kerosine/diesel fuel mixed at 1:1 and even some Kero/Diesel/Solvent cleaner mix over the years and it works great. I'd be happy to use a solven cleaner "neat", but it's really expensive compared to Kerosine and Diesel fuel. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks, Terry. I may try it with diesel. It's not doing me any good just sitting there and I'm not going to drop $100 on cleaner!   :o  RR

What I meant was Bulk oil plant in my last point.

Let me explain the dirty part, has to do with where the solvent sits.(not whether its on the floor)

On my SafteyKleen type. The parts are washed in a sink, the solvent then disappears thru the drain. IT THEN PASSES OVER A MAT, ON A SHELF BELOW..but above the solvent. This traps metal and some of the coarse dirt. The solvent is below, probably a foot or more deep, the pump pickup above the bottom several inches. This means that solids can settle out and not be recirculated.

The cheapos.. all the solvent sits right beow the parts, pump aint 3 or 4 inches up, so it recirculates a lot of mung thru whatever you are trying to get clean..

Hope that explains it a bit.

I used to rent from Saftey Kleen, got expensive. :o

Then I bought mine at an auction, think it was 150 -170 ish

But auction prices can vary, my neighbor has bought 2 at auction in the last year for under 100 each.. the last one was the bigger model for around 60 bucks, taxes in. :o

Generally if an auction is well attended, price will be higher. Todays economy though, tends to be softer on prices..

170 bux was a fraction of what I paid Saftey Kleen Corp!

The bad news...

1)   Rods and pistons are Christmas tree ornaments.

2)   Crankshaft is... Well you all saw it.

3)   Cases are obliterated, but 'could' be repaired with a great deal of effort.

4)   The head needs 11 helicoil's, upper surface is warped and needs .012-.014 taken off (yeah...) and the springs are shot. It has OEM Honda retainers, a distorted stud channel, stock sized valves and 72mm of chamber bore. So it will make a nice boat anchor.  :'(

The not so bad news...

1)   The block is in good shape other than the sleeves.

2)   The .395 Norris cam is in good usable shape also.

All that adds up to mean that a Cobra rebuild is out. Sure I can build a 1000cc with an RC bigblock and a vintage race cam, but to call that a Cobra would be dreamin'.  :-\

I'm going to finish the build I'm working on of course, but I'm not sure what direction I want to go. I'm thinking more and more about an 836, and that's pretty standard stuff around here. Not really worthy of this thread.

Sorry to let you down, I know you were looking forward to it as much as I was. This thread has been epic and I appreciate everyone's interest and well wishes.

 :)

Really unfortunate. Same thing happened to a big-block motor a friend bought recently. Virtually nothing reusable.

I've sent you a PM on another matter. Thanks. RR

I always hate being the bearer of bad news. :( The positive side is that Mike may be able to finance a good amount of an 836 build by selling that RC block. A good 836 build can get you almost as much HP as those old Cobra motors....just ask Sparty. ;)

H'mmm, hoping you weren't going to ask.
We scuffed in some new tyres for the weekend early on Thursday, and me being a tight ass I stuck a hard on the back for the rest of the days practise.
Now Pat (my passenger) has rightly pointed out afterwards that the fact our old girl was lighting up badly at "Honda", "Siberia" and "MG" should have indicated all was not well. But oh no! I gave it the berries through the sweeper, drifted off and put it down the the full length of the gravel trap adjacent to Gardener Straight.
Pat broke a thumb, copped a lot of gravel rash and a nasty gash in his knee.
But he was more upset at shredding his leathers and trashing his new helmet.
The rest of the day was spent at Wonthagies shiny new hospital.
#$%* happens.

Cheers,
Brian
