Tiny touch ups
« on: July 22, 2009, 05:30:56 PM »
I noticed the other day a tiny chip in the tank paint. The spot has rusted but it is roughly the size of something really small. The tank paint, while not the best in the world, is original and still shines. Is there a quick touch up I can do to remove the spot of rust and cover the chip?

go to NAPA and get a black paint that matches and primer, both in the little touchup applicators.  Break the head off a match and put a bit of 600# sand paper over the end.  Smooth that chip down to bare metal.  Touchup with primer.  Let it dry and gently rub over the area with 1500 until it's smooth.  Use the black paint.  Let it dry and use the 1500, then a couple different rubbing compounds, then I use NuFinish and buff with that to a glassy sheen.

do you know if it's original paint or if not, what kind of paint it is?

Whatever you do don't be tempted to just slap some touch up paint over the rust like some cagers do.  Gotta remove all the rust or it'll just keep burbling away inside until you have a hole.
