And the idiot award goes to....
« on: July 29, 2009, 01:10:28 PM »
Me.  I bought some new terminals and plugs from Z1 (awesome stuff, looks totally original) and when everything was done, I removed the battery tray and cleaned it up with some fresh rattle black.  Put everything back together and plugged everything in and turned on the ignition..... No headlight, no taillight.  Also, the fuses where getting RED hot. Spend a half hour diagnosing when I realize I switched the rectifier and fuse plugs by accident. (They're both 6 pin and identical).  Sure am glad I didn't start it up.

So, any challengers? Let's see what you got.

guys,

some sites run free IQ tests.

suggest that you visit them and see that you are within reasonalbe range before going near to a bike again.

dont worry, did my share of REALLY stupid stuff, but that was before the internet, so i couldnt check how stupid i was in real time.

how about leaning a bike on its side to weld a broken footpeg, then while welding with the mask on, start to wonder why so much heat is coming from the welding spot. turns out that a little pool of dripping fuel caught fire.

dont know how I saved it to this day.

I changed my front tire and cleaned up the brake parts a bit, then put it all back together.  A while later I noticed that the brake dragged, but only when turning the wheel - straight forward, no problem.  Couldn't figure it out, and what an annoyance every time I took it anywhere, I'd get brake squeal around every corner!

Finally, I got sick of the noise and had a little extra time, so I went to take it all apart and figure out what I did...

What I did was NOT TORQUE THE FOUR FRONT AXLE NUTS!!!! Nuts were slowly unscrewing themselves and giggling in a fiendish manner.

Should I so readily admit my failures and shortcomings? Maybe I get the idiot award for posting this... We'll see.

I bought my bike and all was fine for about 2 weeks, when it just started running like crap. I mean, like overnight. I was sure I had carb issues. All the symptoms were there, so I removed them, rebuilt them and (after waiting a week to get new seals) put them back on. No dice. Same as before.

Oh wait! You mean you actually need gas in the tank?! Turned on to reserve, and it ran great.

BEAT THAT!

Well, look at the bright side...at least you rebuilt the carbs with some success, which isn't easy to do some times  ;D

I kicked my 80 XS850 over and over for about an hour. Then tried bump starting it with several friends.

Checked everything, battery, gas, carbs, hoses, gears, tires, everything.

After we were all tired and about ready to load it up on the truck, my little 10 year old brother flips the kill switch and it fired right up.

Ever since I started my project I have been in a hurry to get it done.  I recently got the motor running, it ran ok but not great.  I checked dwell multiple times, along with timing and could not figure it out.  For some reason I rechecked the timing a couple of days ago and found #2 spark plug boot was off and just arcing to the head.  After I put it back on and rolled back on the throttle it sounded great and ran just as it should.

Boy that was a hard lesson learned. ;)

You've all got a long way to go to match my level of ineptitude.  This forum is littered with many of my momentary lapses of reason.  Be on the lookout in the "project" forum for my 400F motor teardown today.  To say it didn't quite go as planned would be an understatement.

my recent knucklehead move - i picked up a '77/'78cb550 project in pretty good shape, got it home and did my usual checks: starting, shifting, compression, spark were all ok.  did find part of a ring when i checked the oil pan, tho.   :o

so i replace the ringset on #1, adjust the valves, clean the carbs (idle circuits on #3 and #4 were plugged, choke busted, main plugged on #1, float on #1 twisted, etc.), clean/set the points, set the timing w/my meter and try to start.  good spark, but nada.

after fretting for a day, i remembered a TT post; " to run, all you need is compression, fuel and a good spark at the right time".  happened to be riding my enduro bike on some knarly stuff (see avatar) when the lightbulb in my noodle came on and i raced home.  yup, seems i forgot to check that i was on TDC/compression when setting the valves. had it running in 10 minutes.  Zoom! ;D

I was really excited to finally vac sync my carbs, got a big fan, took care of all the other items (timing, points, etc...) plugged up the fan, got the bike cranked over, synced them in very nicely.   Sounded great!   Decided after many beers and mosquito bites I was better off riding tomorrow and called it a night.   Rode it (tried too, at least) the next day and it was AWFUL!   Weak, stalled out, no idle, no fire on #2 and #3.   I was perplexed for days, turns out it sure helps when you screw the vac screws back into manifold after you remove the sync hoses.   Lucky I didn't lose them in the dirt.   Ever since I've always worked with a light colored towel under me and the bike (since I don't have a garage), helps little fasteners and parts stand out.

There have been many more learning experiences, but there all worth it. ;)

The very first time I rode a SOHC bike, it was my ex-girlfriend's father's cherry '75 CB400F.  I think it was even the first time I had ridden a road bike at the ripe old age of early 20 something.  He told me that the battery was not the greatest and not to run it down trying to start it.  I started it right off and took off down the long driveway and took a right.  I ripped through the gears and got about 2 miles away when it just started to bog and then quit.  I then ran the battery down trying to start it.  I didn't even get a chance to call him from a nearby residence when he came down the road in his truck.  He shows up and turns the fuel on, kick starts it, gave me that "why do I let you #$%* my daughter" look and he rides it home while I ride home with the son in law.  In silence.  My girlfriend liked me and the mom liked me but those old boys had it in for me bad....  I don't miss my 20's at all.

My brain is a bit foggy with paint fumes (yes I'm wearing a mask, but you still get a wiff here and there) so I can't remember all my bone headed moves. Whenever I feel particularly inept, I just remember that there is at least on biker out there significantly more inept than I. He put NOS in his very expensive and pretty new GXSR, and if that wasn't bad enough, he then posted it on the internet seeking help. For anyone who isn't aware, NOS is an energy drink, it says so in fairly large letters right below the S.

Oh, one that does come to mind, was getting ready to start my build, got the battery in, hooked up the cables, went to start it and......nothing. Spent half an hour checking different things for continuity and such before it dawned on me I really should insert the key, set it to ON and then try hitting the starter button. I was sure glad no one was watching that piece of brilliance  ;D.

Ok, when i was young and stupid {just stupid now  ;D} i was up early to go to work, my old honda had an 850 kit and didn't like starting with the electric start on cold mornings so i would just kick it and it usually started first kick. So my old boots were split across the sole just in front of the heel, when i kicked the bike my kick starter went through the split in my boot and i couldn't put my foot back on the ground, the end result was me lying on the ground with the old Honda lying on top of me and i had to stay like that till my Dad got up to go to work {about an hour later... ???} by that time i had cooled down and saw the funny side of it all...... ;D ;D

I actually have a couple.
One day I was changing the oil, and adjusting valves at a friends garage, and one of his tenants walks over to talk to me while I'm under the bike.
I look up and see right up the half shirt of this braless gal. The most wonderful 18 year old BOOBIES  :o I have ever seen.
We keep talking as I'm adjusting the valves (All the while I'm getting a great show). I finish adjusting the valves and she goes off to do something else. I take the bike out for a test ride and hear the most musical noise of valves hammering the pistons. I was so distracted that  I completely screwed up the adjustment on 2 of the valves.
I also ended up having 3 wonderful kids with that hottie.

Next idiot moment. My bike was backfiring through the carbs. I kept putting off fixing it.
One cold (27 F) morning I'm kicking starting the bike. I hear a couple of backfires through the carbs but it starts. I'm warming up the bike and notice that there seems to be a bit of smoke. I look down and it's coming from under my seat. Open the seat and what do I find? An airfilter quite on fire.

Moral of the story is, boobies can be distracting and fix problems before your ass catches on fire.

Hey Mick,  you're still fairly young, compared to some of us.  I won't address the stupid part, other than to say no more so than some of us...  my big on was getting the wire on the regulator wrong.  Could ride 30 miles, and if not home by then to charge the battery, had to make that emabarassing call to Martha and ask her to bring me the other battery  :'( :'( :'(

How about failing to properly tighten the lock nut after setting valves on a CB 360 twin??  a few days later, the engine suddenly started tapping & running funny, then it simply quit. It seems valve adjuster screws do not combine with timing chains well . . . .OOPS!!

Fast forward a couple years. Same bike.

I am getting ready to start the replacement engine the first time. after hooking up wiring, I started up the engine. It ran great but the battery went dead quickly. After some testing, i realized I had mixed up the stator & rectifier plugs. If you have ever done this yourself you probably know that this will discharge the battery through the stator. The parts & wiring survived with a bit of tape . . .

Let's see, the list is long and embarressing :-[

I fitted all 4 carb floats in upside down and wondered why the bike wouldn't work. :D

I spent a whole afternoon searching for an electrical fault before realising the kill switch was "ON". >:(

I bent the internal drive chain guard so it actually hit the chain as it went passed and thought I had a destroyed gearbox. ;)

I fitted 4 new carb isolators and the bike ran worse? My mechanic found I had not seated the isolators correctly and they were letting air in by the bucketload....$130 later! :o

I was so anal about my new gas tank paint job I only put a cup of gas in it to test and then blazed off into the countryside and ran out of gas! :-X
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I've told this one before, but it's a new thread, so wth.

*sigh*
This is the first bike I've ever worked on, so I had loads of misplaced confidence before having the Fear scared into me.

I did the valves.  Myself. Sorta.

I'll let that sink in for a second before sharing the full repercussions.

Ok.  So.  I think I set them all at TDC 1 instead of TDC 1 then TDC4 respectively.  I know for sure I didn't torque the locknuts down enough.  For the rest of my errs, I will never really know, but on a hot summer day, next to a friend's house, on the dry grass, I decide I'm going to use a squirt of ether instead of fuel to get the engine to start, because, toiling away in the sun, I've done pretty much everything else.  To my (continuing) surprise and amazement, it turned over and coughed a little, but ran.  I wanted to repeat this marvel of my own undertaking, so I squirt in more and more ether.  This is about where  the engine backfires and coughs still-burning ether into the airbox, thereby igniting my filter.  OMFG. Thankfully the tank was off, and I was able to find the garden hose by the house.  :o

The lasting effects of this valve adjustment were two bent valves and the ensuing top end job.  Oh, and MX continually reminding me of how I called her while she was in the OR telling her:
" *static, static, the bike was on fire.... static, static... ok now."
"Moderation in all things - especially moderation. Too much moderation is excessive. The occasional excess is all part of living the moderate life."

2tall, what amazes me is it would run at all. I didn't think a gas engine could run diesel, guess I know better now.
