Found: 1976 CB750A 200 miles.

I am new to the forum and to restoring old CBs but I came across this bike and thought it would be a fun project and something that would be fun to zip around town on. It looks like it needs a new tank and a few other items along with a good cleaning. How difficult is it to find parts for this model? How much is too much to invest in a project like this?

It will cost you $1000 to get back on the road.  Average condition it will sell for $1800-2200, if it is rare, really nice, or Bobbed properly, MUCH more.  KingCustomCycles.com

Many of us are not here to make a buck, but to bring these classics back to life.  I know I probably spend more on my restores than I will get out of them.  But that is the price to pay for wanting to restore to original.  I enjoy the ride and the comments people give.  It is fun to be asked to pull over to the side so someone can look at your bike.  Then you hear their stories on how they had that exact same bike in the day...etc.  It is fun to talk bikes with these guys.  Think of it as a great hobby and have fun with it.  The guys on this board are very helpful and also have great knowledge on these bikes.  Be sure to ask questions...and as a side note...we like pics!!!   ;D Welcome....

Just very recently there was a nice A tank on EBay and they don't show up often. They usually only stay there a week. Better search for it. MANY parts are interchangeable but the A has some unique parts. Many parts are still available from Honda as order only. Tanks/body no.

Learn how to use EBay for this stuff. Also use something like this to determine interchangeability.

I use ServiceHonda.com when I spend more serious cash. The 20-30% discounts more than cover shipping.

I use http://www.bikebandit.com/honda/oem-parts to determine availability. If it allows a quantity in the right column you can still get it from Honda. I then order from Service Honda.

Definitely learn how to look up the correct HONDA parts numbers (not Bike Bandit's). If you have determined it is still available then take the part number to your local shop and have them order it to avoid the shipping charges on small inexpensive items. Do not rely on a kid behind the counter to know much about 30-40 year old bikes.

I have a 76 CB750A that I got in May of this Year.  Some parts (Original Muffler) are very hard to find.  I purchased parts from Bike Bandit and Old Bike Barn.  I also went to Vintage Days in Ohio and picked up a rear luggage rack with a back rest, a new OEM oil filter bolt, and a chain guard.  The chain guard was off a CB750F and had to be modified so that the rear mounting hole lined up (1/2 inch short).  I have installed a Dyna S ignition, replacing the points and I replaced the stock coils with Dyna coils.  The flasher unit ($29.95 OEM) I got from Auto Zone for $8.95.  New mirrors and trim I purchased from J.C. Whitney.  I haven't found the correct start push-button yet.  If you plan to ride on the Freeway, you may want to change the stock 48T rear sprocket to something smaller.  I went to a 38T and it reduced the RPMs.  I'm still trying to get use to the Automatic and it's cold blooded nature.  The choke is my best friend.  I have also learned to put my foot on the rear brake a rev the engine a little just before taking off to avoid a dead zone in launching.  Yes, I checked that the fuel pump is working, and I still looking through the service manuals I downloaded from Hondamatic.net.

The 750A are getting quite rare especially outside America, neat bikes I'd love one.
When you say 200 miles, is that short for 200,000 miles or does the bike only have delivery miles still on it???

Thanks for all of the replies. Very helpful. Yea, thought it would be fun to bring this bike back to life but I just didn't want to sink a fortune in it. I don't have any pics right now but if I buy I will post some (if I can figure out how to  :D). This bike really only has 200 miles. It has  some kind of inspection sticker from 1978. The tires were original too I would guess. They are not even dry rotted. They were Dunlop K something or other. Everything is there as far as I can tell which includes a full fairing and bags. The carb boots are as soft as if they came off an 08 model. The story as I know is some rich guy bought it new(along with four other various bikes), rode it for 200 miles and parked it. Apparently he passed away and the family started cleaning out the stuff and that's how I found out about it. The only problem other than some serious cleaning is the tank the inside of which looks like a sunken ship from who knows when! ARG!!! If not for the tank issue I would already have this thing home but I don't want to be stuck with the thing if I ain't got no tank. I'm thinking maybe if I could get it for around $300?? What do you think? Worth it or no?

Even at $500 I would take it, the tank can be cleaned out if it hasn't got any major holes in it, they are best left with gas in them as it protects them if they are left for a long time.
Cleaning one even with rust in it is not hard and there is heaps of help on here for you if you want to do that.
There is a special process where old tanks that can no longer be bought are relined (by you) and they work great so don't let a tank put you off.
Buying another one will depend on what's for sale on Ebay or some wreckers but should not detract you from actually buying this find.
While you wait to find a tank there are a hundred other things to do to get her road worthy again.
Jezz crate it up and send it to me here in New Zealand if you don't want it!
Or if you decide not to buy it let the guys on here know the details and I'm sure it will be on the road again by Christmas.

Agreed, the tank issue is minor.  Go get that bike now before someone beats you to it.  It is a diamond in the rough as they say.  Heck, if you do not want to mess with that tank lining a radiator shop can do it for you.  There is a local shop here that does a lot of work for the cycle guys.  He will clean, etch and line your tank with Red-Kote tank liner for $100.  I sure hope he drained those carbs before he parked it.  That old gas if left in the carbs will require cleaning of those carbs.  Still a good deal for you.  Run, quick, fast, buy... ;D

Sounds like a sweet deal at $300 or even $500. The tank may look nasty on the inside but it is most likely varnish from the gas sitting in it.  As long as the bike was stored with the fuel petcock in the off position the carbs may not be too gunked up.  The disc brakes will need to be dismantled and seals replaced but that's not that big a deal.  My 750F sat for 25 years with a full tank of gas similar to what you have here.  The tank cleaning was the most time consuming but it came out clean as new.  My carbs were easy and I did not even have to remove them.  The brakes cost the most in parts.  Aside from new tires I have put $180 into it to get it running nicely.  Maybe I got lucky, but if this bike was stored inside maybe you can get lucky too.  Pull a carb bowl off and see how clean or dirty it is.

Just a quick FYI, I've had a look at bikebandit.com page searching for a part I recently ordered from Honda -last week- and Bikebandit doesn't show it as available.

FWIW, I ALWAYS order what I need to the local honda dealer. Whatever doesn't come, I search somewhere else. I don't trust anybody else to tell me what do Honda have available except Honda themselves.

With clean-up it then looked like this....the mini-ape-hangers are stock on the 'Matic.....BooHoo...I do miss it !!

 Looks like you have restored both 750 A's and K's. Will the seat off of a '78A fit a '78K? I know the part numbers are different but will it fit?

While both seats hinge on the same side, I don't have measurements for the hinge positions on the A, so not sure....don't have the 'A' anymore....several guys who post here have A's....maybe PM one, let's see, Tomsweb or CBDAVE76....
