Paul....the only thing I'd say is mill off the original handlebar clamp area on the upper triple. It would clean up that area nicely.

I think the red can work if done right.  Is that the color red your shooting for?  I think it should be slightly darker.  Maybe a little more blue in it.  The red in the pic is a little too bright candy for me.  I think every comment about the tail getting some color, whatever color you choose, is on the money.  Especially with red, If you don't accent the tail than the red on the tank is gonna look wonky and random.  I dig your idea concerning the lines of the tank and the fairing.  Could be interesting.

i'm working on that. i hate the clamp halves just sitting there doing nothing.

I think the red looks pretty sharp.  I think a little colour on the tail would go a long way complementing the colour on the tank.
Joe

i think i'm just going to paint red along the curve if you're looking at the rear of the tail. there definitely needs to be some red accent further back, i just haven't decided where yet.

Black is ubiquitous and fades into the rest of the bike, blah.  I think the red is fitting on a Japanese bike and will look smokin' with your jacket.

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel about black on the tank. It's either red, or no paint at all. Funny, didn't think about the red and black jacket..  :D

I haven't seen that particular japauto 750 before, no.. I like how the line where the tank cuts in follws the tail of the fairing or vice versa.

Please do. Doing something bike-related in January would be good for the soul.

I just think since the rest of the bike is black and chrome(ish), the red would look out of place. A nice high-gloss black with those white Honda Wing tank emblems you used to run would look cool and kinda bring it full circle.
But, certainly go with what you like.

And, yeah, WTF with the handlebar bottom clamps? I never could understand why you hadn't gotten around to those with all the down time you had with her.  :P  ;D

You haven't been riding?? The weather's been quite forgiving I think, especially considering that the rest of the country is under a blanket of snow.

Yeah, yeah... I've needed to fix that top tree forever. Chalk it up on the endless "to do" list.. got one side of a spare cut off, then the bandsaw blade broke. Need to cut the other off, then do some milling and welding.

Hey Paul, Little late getting in on this. Seems like you are going with the Red and I was hoping you would, as I was reading through the different posts. Glad you and your bike are getting the attention there in Oregon too! That bike is really something else, can't wait for the final part of THAT build AND to hear how it does on the track. 8) I'm rooting for ya! ;)

Not entirely by choice.
I don't have anything ridable at the moment: Sold the running XS650 to get an '83 GS1100E (needs front & rear brake pads & a new rear rotor); the little 250 ninja is still mostly in boxes and the CB500 needs a whole BUNCH of frontend work after I had a little unplanned agricultural experience last October.

Maybe I'll get to the GS this weekend.....
