A common malady with copper gaskets, the need to re-torque them multiple times.



And Paul, did you dip the copper in liquid nitrogen prior to machining?
Helps a lot.
If you can keep it cool while machining, it helps a lot too.
create a small trough  made of clay  around the plate to fill with more liquid nitrogen once in a while to keep the temps down, or just pour a bit on before the finish machining.



You gonna send those 64mm's my way any time soon?

I cant wait to see the CRs on your bike, when you get it all set and done I would like to see it run. I hated parting with them but I know that they went to a good home.

I guess we'll find out, won't we? I think i might have to keep the idle higher than normal, but phil (nokrome) is running them on his hot CB750, and seems to have no problems.

Need to get the gearbox off to FBG for the other brent too (waller).    I think I have someone here in town interested in my old pistons, also.. maybe we could both save on a little shipping. let me know what you want for them and i'll pass it along. thanks again for saving my ass!

Anyway, sorry for the multiple responses.. I'm not good at editing all of them into one post. 

Update on the head gasket leak situation: It looks like it wasn't the head gasket's fault, but rather that the threads let loose in the case for one of the cylinder bolts. I have the barrels back off now, and am installing inserts in all 12 to be safe. One more hurdle...

Wow, absolutely beautiful!  I can't blame you for wanting one-on-one time with those carbs.

I decided it would be best to fix all of the cylinder bolt holes, so I bought 12 EZ Lok inserts. I installed half of them last night, but have to pull the engine now to get to the front 6. one more hurdle, but one step closer to invincibility!

I've got a BSA A65 too- have you posted any details of your Thunderbolt anywhere?  With the talent you've shown on your Honda builds, I bet you've got great stuff to show on your British Twin stuff too!

I haven't found anywhere too good. I rebuilt the BSA from the crank bush up, then sold it to buy the norton I have now.. it's still in the shop, but not mine anymore. i need to change my signature. i am about to pick up a '69 lightning though...

I've had no time at the shop this week at all, so I've been putting in 15 minutes or so at a time putting it back together. anyway, I got it on the road tonight, and WOW, does it pull hard. It could be that I haven't ridden it in a while, but it really feels like it has lots more power than before. The dyno will tell, but i'm betting on breaking 75 HP with the displacement/CR bump and the CR29s..


Several times I accidentally pulled the front end up, simply grabbing a fistful of throttle... not little wheelies either, more like WOW I SHOULD SET THE FRONT END DOWN NOW wheelies. damn, I can't wait to get the loose ends sorted out. hopefully this weekend...

406# with 5# of gas and 4 qts oil... 385 dry.

The original owner of the cb750 those pistons came from has been asking me quite often if those piston have been used in a new motor yet or not.
I finally have an answer.



Glad you are able to easily pull a wheelie.
75hp? I wouldn't be surprised, considering that the cb650 gets nearly 10cc:1 hp in stock configuration.
And you have gone a ways past that to say the least.


I have really enjoyed your build paulages, you have made a work of art IMO.
Now go finish the final touches, and ride the piss outta it!
 


How is the kick start? a bit hard, or not too bad?
