NEW IDEA FOR TECH FORUM LAYOUT
« on: September 17, 2009, 08:32:47 PM »
I see we have a new HIGH PERFORMANCE forum. Great idea !  But why stop there?  I came up with a list for other
forums to make it easier to search for the information that you need.  Here's my list.........
ENGINE/TRANSMISSION ( GENERAL DISCUSSIONS )
HIGH PERFORMANCE - ALREADY DONE !!  ;D
BRAKES AND SUSPENSION ( CONVERSIONS AND MORE )
WHEELS AND TIRES ( WHAT FITS WHAT )
ELECTRICAL AND WIRING ( TROUBLE SHOOTING AND MORE )
RESTORATION CORNER ( WHERE ORIGINALITY COMES FIRST )
WHAT'S IT WORTH? ( BIKES AND PARTS )
CAFE STYLE
CHOPPER STYLE
STREET CUSTOM / DRAG STYLE
What do you guy's think ?  Too much ?

Blue I truly appreciate the enthusiasm but that a lot of stuff. I like 754's suggestion in the other thread. We have to keep it simple IMO. ;)

I agree with MR. Keep it simple. Right now I can read all sorts of interesting stuff just in the sohc forum. Don't want to have to pick and choose.

I thought that was pretty simple. You would be able to find what your looking for way easier than scrolling through
pages searching even after you did a search. I belong to a chevelle website, CHEVELLES.COM   Go there and check out
their forums to see how it's laid out. That's were I got the idea for the new layout.   ;D
Once you click on a type of forum above on a blue line click on new posts and see how easy it is to navigate around
and find what yer lokking for.   ;D

Exactly.

The more you divide the forums up into sub-forums, the more sub-forums you have to look through to see if there's anything you can help with or may find of interest, and the fewer views and responses you'll get to any particular thread.

Considering we're already sub-divided quite a bit from the overall motorcycling community, I think breaking things up into even smaller sections would be counterproductive.

I would like the layout to stay some what the same but have a nicer tagging system. Mainly when a owner creates a thread there are some advanced options (drop down selections) where he can choose mainly what it applys to.

Bike (cb500, 550, 750 etc etc)
Tech ( engine, transmission, handling)
style (cafe, bobber, orig....)

This way when you search you can mod your seach based of that..
CB550's
Kansas City..

dont think its a good idea, many posts deal with a variety of themes and would require splitting.

I said it in the performance forum, no need fro so many sub sections, it will make simple surfing harder

Hey, it was just a suggestion. I know some people don't like change, but before you shoot it down go to Chevelles.com and see what i'm talking about. You guy's might be right, as the chevelle site is way more active than this site and
what little activity that goes on here might not fill all of the categories.

You also can't forget the fact that many people who come here for help have no idea what the problem with their bike is.  When confronted with multiple sections in which to post for help they could very easily make the wrong choice, or just decide it's too confusing and not ask their question at all.

This already happens all the time with the "Tricks & Tips" and "Project Shop" forums, where newcomers ask questions that should really be posted in the tech forum.

Thats why we as members should teach them with a response to help them navigate to the correct area.
That is how i learned on the chevelle site. Also a little common sense really helps.  ::)   Maybe a forum for NEWBE'S
to get started.  :D

That avatar is dead now if it wasn't!! :o

Love the idea for the performance thread. Keep it up. :) :)

I don't care how it's structured I just don't want to sift through newbie info to get to things like, Maximum bore, Shock conversions, Good brake upgrades, a list of performance clutches that fit, HP exhausts, performance wiring diagrams, electrical upgrades. ??? ???

I would love a aftermarket parts list with suppliers listed. Broken down by model. :-\

Also a parts compatibility list. For example I just put a set of gsxr 4-2-1 headers on my cb550. Not an exact fit but with a little elbow grease it worked. My $13 worth sorry.  ;D ;D

Naw, the NEWBE section would just explain how to use the forums, giving examples on like where to post certain questions. It wouldn't have catagories like the tech section, just a few examples to help a new member get started.  ;D

I'm registered on a local Jeep forum and there are at least a dozen forums to browse through. It makes it hard to remember what you posted in and where it was.  I'm in favor of what we presently have.

I like your idea Blue, but for me, I like having one page devoted to all bike related issues. I would never click on "Engine" and then, Brakes, and then Body, ect. My attention span doesnt go that deep.

Well get to work then! ;)   Nobody here is getting paid to take their time to consolidate lists like that, and things like that take a lot of time and effort.  I would love to see something like that, too, but I definitely don't have the desire to do it myself.

Be the change that you want to see! ;D ;D

Checked chevelles and find it totally un-appealing, messy and confusing.

With 300K posts in the "4 bikes" forum alone I think you are offending the sohc4 mebers......more active than us?

Car guys drag along the road tons of useless stuff: glass windows, acres of metal sheet, two wheels too much, four living room sofas, not all what suits them suits our zen minimalist sohc's.

An extra performance tech section is more than enough me thinks

Just my suggestion,

TG

I see what you are saying. But all that can be, and should be, put in the subject line.

Some people write terrible subject lines, no clues as to what's in the post.

Ok is there a way for me to create a "Favorites" section in my profile? So instead of thread owners tagging their post to make it easier to sort through threads, it would be cool if I could tag the post and group it so I can return to it later.. Kinda like how delicious is setup..

I would do it but I can barely post photos to the site. I'm useless when it comes to this stuff.

Carb rebuilding, Building a wiring harness to suit your needs, Chopping up your frame to a bobber or some one off cafe. That's where I'm good.

Sorry.

I would love to see the 550's and 750's separated atleast.  I also visit another forum you all know of that has categories dedicated to rearsets & brakes, Seats & tanks.  Makes the navigation much simpler.

Sounds like a poll question to me..... Lets vote on a few categories to add or delete.
