powdercoating an oil tank
« on: October 30, 2009, 05:18:09 PM »
Hello all.
I'm going to send frame, swingarm and other black bits to powdercoat. I don't know if an oil tank can be powdercoated too, or if with the high temperatures involved on the process, the inside paint of the tank would flake, or if it should be powdercoated inside too.
Thank you.

there shouldnt be any paint INSIDE the tank.

I thought they were painted inside from factory.

I would just paint it separate from the rest of your bits going out for powder.

I sent mine out for powdercoating and had no problem. Just taped everything off really well.

I was thinking cost over need.
How often will your oil tank get hit with a stone or some such thing?

I don't think they're painted on the inside, wouldn't oil eat that away over time?

And as far as cost, if you are going to have a pro do it, I would think powder coating would be cheaper.  If not it should be, the materials are much cheaper.  Now if you were going to paint it yourself...

Since I´m sending the whole frame and all the black parts to be powdercoated, one more piece won't increase the price too much.

I have had a couple of oil tanks powder coated in the past and both looked great afterwards. The tank on my K1 was done last year with a load of other parts and as you say, one more part in a pile will not add much on. The coating people normally mask everything off real well too.

May be worth saying to them that it is an oil tank and could they mask up before grit blasting as you don't want that in your tank. Real pain to clean.

Cheers
