It did remind me, on a slightly more serious note, of a Ford story I saw in last Sunday's paper. It seems Ford is banking heavily on what they are calling their Eco-boost engine design. From what I could tell from the article, they are small displacement engines, but turbo-charged. I guess the extent to which they are "eco" depends on how often you "boost."  ;) The interesting part was Ford felt that buyers would be willing to pay an extra $5,000-$10,000 for cars with these engines. Umm, not me thanks.

I had the 1988 3.0 v6 Merc. Sable. Both the Sable's and the Tauras' v6 were known for catching on fire. I picked mine up in 1992 after it had caught on fire. Just some hose damage and damage to the wiring harness. I always carried a fire extinguisher with me. I only had to use it once, on the Embarcadero in S.F. right in front of Gordon Birsch Brewery. I saw smoke, pulled over popped the hood, put the fire out. Kinda sucked. Plenty of good times, of course jamming to the tunes of Primus. Saw them at Lalapalooza in 93'.

It did remind me, on a slightly more serious note, of a Ford story I saw in last Sunday's paper. It seems Ford is banking heavily on what they are calling their Econo-boost engine design. From what I could tell from the article, they are small displacement engines, but turbo-charged. I guess the extent to which they are "econo" depends on how often you "boost."  ;) The interesting part was Ford felt that buyers would be willing to pay an extra $5,000-$10,000 for cars with these engines. Umm, not me thanks.

It's the EcoBoost, and a quick Google search will tell you everything you want to know about it. At this time, they're only using them in the Taurus SHO and Lincoln MKS, both of which cost well over $35,000. Both are considered performance luxury sedans, and they're priced appropriately within their category. I'm not sure what makes you think the engine alone warrants a $5-10K price hike.

if i had the money, i'd be standing in line to get a new SHO Taurus, 365bhp twin turbo 6. thats 140 more hp than the 5.9litre mustangs were, in a car that weighs something like 500 pounds less.

I read that part. You'll have to explain yourself. Are you trying to contrast my statement of "I'm not sure what makes you think the engine alone warrants a $5-10K price hike." with his stating that "Ford felt that buyers would be willing to pay an extra $5,000-$10,000 for cars with these engines."?

I assumed that he inferred that much from the article. You assume that Ford stated it outright. Your assumption would hold if the EcoBoost cars weren't priced competitively within their respective classes.

I'm unaware of any 5.9L Mustangs. The 351 Windsor and Cleveland round up to 5.8 liters, but they haven't been used in a production Mustang since the early '70s.

The "big" Mustangs of the early '70s weighed in at around 3600lbs. An '08 GT500 weighs about 3900lbs. The Taurus SHO has a reported weight of 4368lbs. No one in their right mind would ever consider the SHO anything near "light."

I don't. The author of the article was quoting Ford. I wouldn't pay it.

i think it's reasonable to assume it was a typo on bucky kat's part. he knows his muscle iron.

Bored, Laminar?

I just sold my car an hour ago, my one running bike is put away for the winter, and the wife is gone for the evening. So yes.

I don't. The author of the article was quoting Ford. I wouldn't pay it.

It'd be interesting to see the actual quote. As I've said before, nothing I've seen so far is out of line price-wise. If they suddenly tried to start selling a Focus for $30,000 or a Ranger for $35,000 that much would be obvious. But a 365hp luxury sedan for $38K is right inline with (or even cheaper than) Infinity, BMW, Mercedes, etc.

It was more of a rhetorical question. ;)

The fact that you're trying to pick a fight in the humor section kind of says it all.
