Fastest Motorcycle on the Highway !
« on: November 29, 2009, 11:25:43 PM »
Just found this, not sure when it happened..
A guy in Utah, named Ken Merena, somehow convinced the police to close a section of Highway so he could attemt a record run..

He ran  241 on a turbo Suzuki.. but he is dissaponted that he did not beat the Bonneville record 265 mph ( that has been broken)
Pretty darn fast for the highway, 4X the speed limit..

Amos ran a 1 way of 270 this year on a sit up bike..

What the guy trying to do this on pavement , he may, or may not be realizing...

IF he ran 270 on the asphalt he may only run 255 on the salt.

His timing equipment may not be as accurate/or recognized by the world.. as the Bonneville timing setup..

The amount of time & knowledge, being used at Bonneville by probably at least a dozen others trying for the same goal..

Which is all OK, if he is very very good at it, after all Amos did go the fastest, and he still has to move a car out of his garage to  work on his lSR bike, .. but what he accomplished is the culmination of YEARS of work, an VERY GOOD help...

Don't post much, but have to disagree.
http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/SQUID
Ken Merena looks to be geared up, got all the necessary approval, and is achieving high speed legally and as safely as possible at that speed.
If you know anything about the salt flats, they are just as unforgiving as a stretch of highway... its a fine layer of loose salt for crying out loud!  Only good thing about the salt flats is a level surface for miles (not to be read as un-bumpy or un-grooved).
So... there aren't any birds at the salt flats?... Granted, there aren't many, but they are there.
Please, save the squid comments for the idiots, that I'm sure you see nearly every day, riding around with their helmet attached to the back of their bike while in flip flops and shorts.  Unless of course your going to lump every single racer in your squid category to fit the 7th definition in the link provided.
Sure, 200+ is dangerous on a highway... its dangerous at Bonneville too.

This guy is probably wayyyy safer than all the folks hitting 175 mph on a public road, with other traffic, less safety gear, and no ambulance waiting...

Ever been in that country/county?.. Old Scrambler, myself and another fellow all on 73 & 74 cb 750S, rode that 50 MILE STRAIGHT STRETCH.. .. it is fairly flat.. and smooth..

We got passed by Chris Carr on that stretch.. :o

I am amazed they let that guy try it, but Tooele County has 2 of the finest Motorsports facilities in N America.., it really is motorsport oriented..

I find it hard that only I see it like this. Picture it, the salt flats have been used for decades. This guy uses a stretch of public road and even though it is closed down, it will draw more publicity. Now I would not normally care but given the freaks running around trying to protect everyone from anything dangerous or fun, I am sure how you can see what would happen if this went bad. A big media #$%*storm over how motorcycles are too fast and blah blah blah. You can also bet not one word would be said about his gear either.
It shouldnt matter where it happened but the very rare occasion of a stretch of road being shut down draws attention.
I could be over reacting but given the crap on tv and the big deal people have made about smaller things than this. There is enough public sentiment against bikes and I would hate from some person doing something like this to buy the farm and make things work.
If it was 20 years ago and there were less pc junk and protect you from yourself garbage, I would help they guy build the freakin thing.

If your concerned about Motorcycle image.......

Consider advising against loud pipes.....I assure you the public image of motorcycles as dangerous is firmly planted.

One guy splattering himself down the highway (or salt flats) isn't going to affect that much.

Tiger Woods backed his car into a tree at 2 in the morning.....who cares if a guy no ones heard of bounces down the road in Utah. Hell thats how Evil became famous....crashing  ;D

When was evil times? Oh yeah, back in the 70s! Like I said, times have changed and people go off the deep end on stupid stuff. I have gotten so tired of the group madd, that I have thought of creating one called damm. Drunks against Mad Mothers!

As for one guy splattering not being a big issue, a few years back some yahoo did this on a MN hyway. He was clocked going over 220. It made the news for a few states around and he did NOT biff it.

I also dispute the loud pipes thing with people too.

The MN rider made the news, mostly due to being ticketed for a speed only the cop felt it could do..

Nearly everyone else did not believe it, thus the endless discussion..

The Utah guy, an attention whore.. does not sound like it

Actually 754, you are wrong. but so was I. The guy was clocked with a stopwatch. So the speed was timed. So it was not what the cop felt he was doing or could do. The rider was ticketed for going 205. I was off on the speed.

It was a honda litre bike. A cbr1000 model, not sure the exact designation but top speed on those in 04 was about 170-175 range. A few mods and 200 is easy.

Scott Guthrie helps Jon Amos out with tuning, I believe..

I met Jon in August, not a real glitzy bike.. small ordinary trailer, works on it at home.. its humbling to see what this guy has done when some people show up with workshops in semis, and seemingly unlimited funds..

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Also motley, did you miss the 7th definition? Read it again.
