Good question. I have always wondered if their was a huge difference...

Where did you come across Wide White Walls in 18'' & 19'' sizes ?
The coolest WWW is from Avon, but their Gangster whitewall only comes in a 16''  >:(

some front tires have a design or pattern made especially for fronts...many don't..front and rear paterns are the same...I would suggest looking at the tire pattern you are looking compared to the rear.. then use your own judgement...I've run front tires on rear with no problem...if it make ya feel better you could talk to the tire maker and ask their opinion ;)

If they have a direction of rotation arrow, use front tires backwards on the rear.

A rib tread won't work too well on the rear. Back in "the day" it was common to use rears on both ends, and a few popular tires like the K81 were made with arrows with both front and rear rotation arrows.
If your tire has a block tread pattern then it should be acceptable for the rear.
