77 CB550 Oil Pump Leak????
« on: January 09, 2010, 11:33:03 AM »
I pulled the cover and noticed I have an oil leak that appears to be coming from the oil pump. Looks like quite a bit although only a few drops per week. there was a good amount of oil in the recess on the cover. SHould there be an oil in this area? I wouldn't think so...

I called bike bandit and Z1 and both are out and the oil pump is a discontinued item and no aftermarkets.

Question is, would replacing the "O" rings solve the leak???

How much of a pain int the A$$ is it to fix??

Should I be looking for one from a salvage yard??

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sniper,

Replacing the rings should do the job.

Replacing the oilpump may get you into a better (temporarily), but might also get you into a worse position.

Cheers, Rene

Having the same problem, I was told that leaking oil pump seals are quite common. Replacing the "o" rings should cure it.

Thanks for the help. Bike bandit had the O rings so I ordered them. Hopefully that does the trick.

youll need an impact driver to loosen the screws, if it still "phillips"replace them with allen type heads, loosen the counter sunk cover ones whilst the pump is still on the bike.

Are you sure that it isn't oil thrown off the chain?

I'd thoroughly clean the general area, then use talcum powder liberally where you think the leak is coming from. Then run the engine & see what comes out.

The two "normal" leaks are the oil pressure switch and the oil pump cover that Honda dont sell the "O" ring for, you can only get the 3 between pump and crankcase which rarely leak.

Some time ago i put a lot of time and effort into sourcing a replacement for the cover which i sell as part of a set of 4 (3 x pump to crankcase + 1 x pump cover)

Majour part of cost is postage, if you want a set PM your address and I will tell you how much---Dont forget I am in the UK!!

I had the same issue a couple of years ago. I replaced 2 (or was it 3?) o rings with o rings I bought at Canadian Tire. I also replaced the orignal bolts with hex head bolts. It hasn't leaked a drop since (not there anyway!). Total cost of repair was something like $4.

There is a fifth not listed as it can not be purchased separately from the pump assembly. Member Elan sells a rebuild kit with all 5 o-rings needed.

The fifth that is not available separately from the oil pump is the same as the two used in early 70's goldwing oil pumps - which are available from honda. The part number is 91305-426-003.

I tried several different 45mm o rings under the oil pump cap, but the leak persisted until I ordered the correctly sized 47 x 1.2mm honda goldwing o ring.

Hi. just following up.i had to drill off the cover plate as the heads stripped out before they would budge. I replaced with allen head bolts. but when i tightened down the left side engine cover, the bottom oil pump cover allen bolt cracked the engine cover. as the bolt head was too proud. I guess that is why they originally used countersunk bolt heads. Job done now and oil tight. Thanks.Mike

I also appear to have run into the same problem with an oil pump issue as you. Took off my cover and just heaps of oil in the recess of the cover. I posted about it recently and was informed of a member here, name is Elan. He sells oil pump rebuild kits on eBay for $42.00. Just thought I'd give my two cents on the matter. Good luck. I'll make a post about the process and how it goes, but from what I hear the screws are a pain to remove without stripping. Has anyone had any luck hitting the screws with PB blaster or some other kind of lubricant in an attempt to make the removal of the screws easier?

My 72' came with the same problem when I bought it. I had our parts guy order all 5 o rings and after one of our mechanics installed them, problem fixed. But, like jonda500, they had to order the 5th ring from a 73' goldwing. Your parts guy is going to look at you funny when you tell him what you need...lol!

I have a leaky oil pump on my 75 CB550f and just order from Vital Motor Parts an oil pump rebuild kit for $43.00 off of eBay. Just thought I'd share that you can still buy the kit.
