I did determine out on the road it is too loud. My buddy was on his superhawk which has just about the loudest available aftermarket pipe on it and he couldn't hear his bike. Thats a 1000 cc too, and I would prefer to not have it any louder than that bike since much past there and the local PD begins to harass you. I am going to start with a longer header and I may even make it standard single mount just for now so she can have the bike. I may fiddle with a more complex muffler over winter for it. So I can make it under engine still. So the plan will be to use the can on there now just move it further back.

Sure sounds like a good plan. Yea, you don't want it too loud..

Today has been about success and failure, I made silencing tips for the exhaust and now it runs better and sounds perfect. The fail is that the front caliper mod I was planning will not work at all, the caliper is too wide even if I space out the rotor  :-[ So off to the wrecking yard to hopefully find a suitable replacement.

I am not sure that is a failure as much as it is a project adjustment!  ;D

So I visited the local wrecking yard and came back with a filter  ??? oh and a good condition replacement caliper for the stocker. Came with pads too! Woot now all she needs is a brake bleed and I fingers crossed will be in the clear!

One last "project adjustment" to put in 120 and 90 main jets just in case I am lean (probably am).

Then out for a "beat the snot" out of it ride to bring to light any problems. More to come people, thanks for the support everyone!

The brake bleeding kicked my ass back and forth for a while I overcame.  ;D

that is exactly why anytime I am doing any sort of project work one of the first things I buy is speedbleeders for the brakes. I LOVE those things and I HATE bleeding brakes!!! I even bought 4 for the Dart.

The rear brake stay arm came loose and as soon as I applied the rear brake that whole assembly sheared off. I am glad it happened to me. I know for sure I put the clip in so I don't know what happened. Maybe the clip was just about to break and I didn't notice. At any rate I repair it all and now all I need is a new clip from the hardware store.

...is it too late (or too early?) to suggest some kind of voodoo cleansing ritual/exorcism/sage smudging?

almost Kit, bike goes to Seattle tomorrow night.

Just a few little things to tidy up today, then load it on the trailer and send it up.

Its funny the things I didn't change are the things failing ironically.

Oh, I wouldn't find that ironic.  I have great faith in your work.  I'd have just gone over all the old stuff with a fine tooth comb, too. :D

Maybe the things wrong should be called "textbook Murphy" the things looked at are fine and the things not are not.

My statement above was because of all the flack I received on other forums about how the bike wouldn't work and wasn't going to be safe in the areas I modified. Which I can't refute with certainty, but I can say so far it seems like it is doing great. After a few thousand miles I will know for sure. That's why I find the irony in the things needing my attention.

I think it's funny how people can point out the grave design errors in what's-his-name's 330-wheeled 750 conversion, errors that would get someone killed (or at least make the thing unrideable) and get booed and shot down for being hyper-critical, but when it's a good, solid looking modification made by a capable fabricator, the criticism is heeded more and thus given more validation?

I don't know if that makes sense.
Anyway.  I believe if *you* trust your work, you know what you're talking about.

Well steel doesn't usually fail all at once. It slowly fatigues under the load type of repetition so on the shock it won't just one minute be fine and the next broken. There should be stress fractures first then play and as the play gets worse eventual failure. All that to say if what I made to hold the shock is indeed not strong enough anyone who watches carefully should notice well before there is even play. Even if they make it to extent that the assembly has play a keen and wise person would/should stop to investigate. Now aluminum on the other hand can all the sudden just fail but that isn't what I built here.

Actually when explaining this on a few other forums I kept asking myself "Why do I need to explain myself? I know how this stuff works."

Anyways I am happy the bike is finally ready to be ridden for a while. I need to work on my bus and finish my sister's Jeep project. So there probably won't be another bike build for a week or two  ;). Maybe I should sneak that project on here and call it the thread "The war of the wheels"

Ha, well I trust you've learned your lesson:  Even "little" projects can be worthy of their own threads.

As for sneaking the other thread on here, I'm sure you can slip it in the open forum or something.

I always feel happy and sad at the wind down of a build  :) :'(

It will probably look wicked awesome on the trailer, like it is headed out to the races. I should paint a number on it as a joke.

Well, not "final" since it will be back of course later for all of the detail work, but I do have the shots of it on the trailer.

If you are really feeling like you need another project I suppose I could send down my ugly ass toad of a CX!!!

Lord knows I won't get around to working on it anytime soon....I have been riding it though but now with a busted speedo and a busted tach it is getting a little harder to judge speed. Ofcourse it's not exactly like the old CBR where I could be doing 160km/h and only feel like I was cruising at city speeds!!

LOL, yeah that is my 65' Sundial Camper Bus project/daily driver. Someday I may break away from bikes long enough to actually do something with it. Although my78k is going to send me his cx so...  ;)

Cool!
Is the Nighthawk her's as well?

I see she has the Scorpion's Pink Paradise helmet. One ebay seller was closing out a bunch of them for cheap earlier this year. If it weren't going to void the warranty you could buy one and then repaint it to your tastes...
2 yr warranty voided if you modify or paint the shell.
Skullskins to the rescue...?

Your little sister's smile says it all.

How cool must she feel riding around on that bike?  Cafes aren't too common, much less with a chick at the controls.
