Look what I found today...
« on: January 18, 2010, 05:24:44 PM »
 ;D ;D ;D ;D

I got a text in response to one of my wanted ads yesterday "I got a 79 CB750" I ignored it since it was a 79. Today he put an add up for it and the grainy picture showed it to be a SOHC, probably a 77 or 78.

Called him up. Loaded a ramp and headed over there, I think I got a deal..

Thinking its maybe a hot engine since the bike has all sorts of goodies. RC 4-1, nice shocks, fork brace (The good kind that clamps onto the for legs), air forks, drilled rotor, hot coils, some older electronic ignition, and ports feel really smooth. Also came with 4 milk crates full of stuff. Oil coolers, another head, pistons carbs etc...

Allright, gloating over, anyone know what carbs are in the 2nd to last picture?

Great find Shin but don't you find it odd that they spent all that $$$ on parts of the bike and it has a gaffer taped seat? ;D
Looks like a set of CB650 carbs in the background of that second to last shot, not sure about the others, they look....old.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Are the carbs VM28s (smoothboore) off a Z1?

All up a pretty nice little find, hopefully it does have more go-faster bits in it!

Actually, I think I got my numbers mixed up  ::) VM29s maybe? Here's a pic of a VM29 smoothbore http://www.z1enterprises.com/images/parts/29mm-Smoothbore-carbs-side.jpg from this good VM carb guide here: http://www.z1enterprises.com/reference/z1-carb-guide.aspx. If you don't use them, you could probably sell them off for some OK money.

There is a also a thread with some really good comparison pictures of Mikunis, but I can't remember now who it was that posted it or what the thread name was. Try searching on VM or Mikuni.  :)

Fishead posted the carb pics and knows them well.

Those are not early Z1 as I sold him a set and those are not the same.

I am pretty sure the carbs are from a Z1 around 76, 26mm (that seems small?)????

at least compared to these http://www.beezeees.com/resources/carbs/z1-carb-guide.aspx_files/1976-26mm-carbs-side%202.jpg

Over the next couple days I am going to try and identify all the parts I can, so if you think you know your sh!t, stick around  ;D

I have a set of VM26s and thought the same thing to be honest, so went out to the garage to check them. The bodys are very similar, but the bowls are different. What you have has a flat vertical section on both sides of the bowl, which seems to match the VM29s..?

The easiest way to tell the VM 29 smoothbores from the is the extra castings in the venturi (Air filter side). Most VM 29's also have a removable plug in the bottom of the bowl for easy jet changes.

VM 29's shown in 1st pic

VM 26/28 look like the 2nd pic (No extra castings in the venturi)

The 29's also have the little square cast into the side of the carb boby (as seen in Z-1 link).
Your 1st pic looks like it may have the square casting in them and they look like accel pump carbs.

The Beezees link shows the side of the 26/28 cars without the little square cast in them.

Let us know what you have.

Pretty sure they are the second ones, VM26/28.

Anyways here is the first round of photos, The chain adjusters look goofy and I dont understand how they work yet with the swing arm. I am not as familiar with later k7 k8 stuff so are these the stock adjusters/swing arm?

Are the "air forks" just caps? Can I run these on my 550 front end? (Same diameter?) Same with the fork brace? Anyone know anything about these shocks or about this dyna electronic ignition? I have to make some room and then fab up an engine mount for my engine stand before I can take a look at the motor. In one of the parts bins there is also what I think is an early KO cam R1? Its looks pretty hot compared to the stock cams I have seen but it has some light surface rust. Is it ok to bead blast?

Sorry for all the questions.

Bike is a 78K, motor seems to be very very late in the production run. Why would anyone do all these great work to something as ugly as a K8  ;D

I can not wait to dig into the motor. I forgot I already had a mount for a 750 motor welded up for the engine stand! So now all I got to do is drop the motor.

I am not really sure what to do with this bike. I could probably part it all out and maybe keep a few choice parts for a 750 build... Anyone want to trade a runner for a hotted up bike and 4 crates of parts?
Just throwin' it out there.

Another question, the rear rim is stamped D.I.D. Is this a stock Honda item? I think I remember reading something saying DID made the rims for honda or something, I dont know.

Also trying to determine the work on the ports...

Those marzocchi's are awesome - that bike has all sorts of kit on it. I'll be excited to see the piston measurements!

If you have the Smoothbore adapters for the Mikuni's, I would run the Mukuni's that you have.(most Mikuni Accel pump carbs, like yours, are 28mm) The SB adapters are a little longer than the OEM Honda units.

There is a set of carb boots in one of the boxes, but they were rock hard. I assumed they where just stock boots but I will double check. Are those SB adapters still available? I will probably have to get some new ones me thinks. I really like the idea of running those and I hope the adapters are not a lot of cash! I will have all day today to dig into the bike, seeing as how I just learned I was laid off...  ::)

Thanks for the info guys, this might be the start of the 750 I have always wanted to build. Just need to find a early K frame now.

P.S. The R.C. pipe is for sale

Sorry to hear that, well kinda  ;D

Cleaned my work space today so I will try and get into the motor soon.
I dont know what I am keeping yet but here is some of the stuff I know I will be selling off.

1 stock master cylinder.
Oil cooler and adapter plate
R1 cam, which I think is from an early early 750 bike (KO-K1?) looks pretty hot. I have to blast it to make sure there are no pits and to make sure its usable.
Oil pump
Pistons (later kind with the raised center)

The SB adapters are still available. If the carb boots you have DON'T have a Honda Product code on them they are probably SB adapters and may be worth the effort of "reconditioning" them (winter green oils, etc).

If you have the Smoothbore adapters for the Mikuni's, I would run the Mukuni's that you have.(most Mikuni Accel pump carbs, like yours, are 28mm) The SB adapters are a little longer than the OEM Honda units.
Pic of the adapters and a set of VM 28's.

There is a set of carb boots in one of the boxes, but they were rock hard. I assumed they where just stock boots but I will double check. Are those SB adapters still available?

The SB adapters are still available. If the carb boots you have DON'T have a Honda Product code on them they are probably SB adapters and may be worth the effort of "reconditioning" them (winter green oils, etc).

So your saying these are expensive...  ;D

 Last I checked, about $150.
