Topic: 77k carbs

hey guys.  i hear that 77k carbs have adjustable needles and an accelerator pump.  they're PD carbs for sale in on here, and i'm strongly considering buying them.  i want to know how the accel pump works, and how easy these are to fix on a 76k.  how good of carbs are these?  i've had recommendations of PD carbs as a cheap alternative to CR's, so any thoughts here are appreciated.  thanks guys!!

ok, so i got the carbs, i think they were a good buy.  now i need to know where i can get some new 77 carb boots so i don't have to try and revive some old ones?

Try Honda for the the rubber. I have a 2 parts racks, I may have rubber on them.

 I never ran the 29's but did run 77s on an earlier K.. they will have beter response. The downside, harder to get bowls off, and to change needle height is a bit different. Also aircleaner size is a bit bigger

 They have a seperate choke cable, you will need to mount, but it works better than eaty version(has fast idle i think)

 Another plus is you wont need tank indents above the frame rails, a plus if modding frame or running custom tanks.

thanks for this information!  i did check honda for the parts, at least the fiches through bike bandit, and it looks that i can only get #1 and 3, as 2 and 4 aren't available.  i'm not sure about the specifics, but i know 2 of them aren't available.  i don't think fabbing a mount for a chock cable will be a problem, and changing needle height won't be bad once i learn how to do it.  and carbs can't be perfect in ALL aspects, so i'll get over the bowl thing, haha!

dumb question, but you need each individual carb boot for it to fit properly, correct?  as in i can't "force" a #1 onto a #2 or something like that?  thanks

Actually, I think you can flip the two they do have upside-down and that'll be the same thing. I believe I read that on here somewhere, but could be wrong. Makes sense though...

i hope so!!  if this is the case, i'll order 2 of each from bike bandit!  i think the problem with the carb boots is that they all have a slightly different angle, so they aren't interchangeable at all... 

i don't think the inlet spacing on the head isn't different between a 76 and 77 is it??

port spacing is the same, but 77/78 differs on the carb end of the rubber...

so the head end will still be the same between the two years?  if i get the 77's then they'll still fit on the 76's head correct?

well i just snagged a set of 77 rubbers and the air box off ebay, so i'm hoping i can restore them and have good leak free operation!! 

ok, so maybe someone can help me decide which is better.  stock airbox with good air filter, or pods??  i hear the airbox is better and more easily tuned, and i can see why this is so.  pods look badass, but i figure i could paint or do something to the airbox to give it a better look.  any thoughts?

If you spend a lot of time at lower rpms or lugging it you may not like pods. if you run headers, pods and ride in a spirited manner, you will probably like them..

well i ride pretty "spirited" (haha, my other bike is a honda spirit, good pun!)  some roads around home i HAVE to putter around, so i usually drop it down a gear.  i had UNI pods on there before and they performed quite well once it was tuned, granted i was at higher elevation, where all my bikes ran better it seemed...  either way, i enjoy the look, but if the air box will net more gains, then i'll go with that, otherwise, i'll get over the inherent lackings of pods and ride the piss out of her!!   

so i might have a 77 air box up for sale sometime soon, haha

 30 years later when I came on this board, I heard of all these issues , I had never even thought of or experienced.. .. maybe cuz I spent more time near redline than idle..

 Honestly, I did notice slight differences in cross winds or with changing leg positions, but with the gas mileage and performance I got, would I ever go back...not..

well that's a PRETTY strong sign to me to go with some pods...  now the question is, which ones perform the best???  i enjoyed my UNI's before, but they might not be the best now...  i'm going to look at k&n or dynoman's version of them
