What is that? Whoa look at those!! How the hell??
« on: February 02, 2010, 07:25:11 AM »
So i ended up getting this beauty this past weekend after all of your peer pressure  ;D

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=64649.0

And i went through it a bit last night (had to take the bags and fairing off to get it in the basement) and found some interesting/confusing stuff.

Underneath the trunk, there was a black box.

In this box there was this:

After a little head scratching, i think it is a little air pump that at one point in time connected to the front and rear shocks.  The thing weighs about 10 lbs and is stuck under the seat (that is topic 3).  Does this mean that neither the front or rear shocks will work without this monster hooked up and running? Any of it worth saving?

And my last problem:  I don't have the keys to this bike.  I have tried the keys to my other K8 but to no avail.  I can't get the seat unlocked.   Besides it being killer looking (sarcasm), smelling like donkey piss, and hiding a nest of some sort in the battery box, i would really like to take it off.  I know the lock is held in by 2 screws (that i can't get to) and i have no idea if the hinge is welded or bolted on on the seat.  Anyone have a good way popping this lock?  Drill it out maybe??

They aren't very tough locks... I popped mine open with a thick flat head. I tried lubricating, cleaning... I had they key, it just wasn't going anywhere so I resorted to brute force. By brute force I mean I tickled it with the screwdriver and it opened.

Get the number off the ignition or seat lock and you should be able to get a replacement key.

Air shocks.  Neat!

Yeah i did a search and saw that mentioned somewhere, but the problem is there is no ignition to speak of and i can't see the seat lock #s......so i guess its going to have to be project tickle.

Wow, front and rear adjust, back in the day.. :o

Them horns are very loud, you may have to pop the end off the compressor and oil up the vanes, on the air horn.

Ifyou are planning on changing out the lock, you can get a can of keyboard duster (air in a can) turn it upside down and stick the straw in the hole. And continue to freeze the sucker. Should help ease the pin breaking. Worked for me... I already had a new lock, so it didn't matter that this method broke more than just the pins... Still needed some "tickeling".
I bet that pump runs those horns too...

Thanks for the tip.  Yeah, there was definitely one of those black little air hoses running to them.  I can only imagine....

horns had their own compressor, otherwise the bike would rise, when you hit the horn..

The lock numbers are hidden on late looks, you can see them after you get the lock off.. some Honda shops have a box of keys, may let you pick thru if you bting the bike..

Had horns (triple!) like them decades ago. I used the compressor to inflate my campingmatras.
I don't like the way they're mounted though. Push the button and you risk going backwards all of a sudden. Over 120 km/h horns in that position will affect steering.
Bike seems to have belonged to a stuntman anyway. I suppose the compressor in the rear operates an ejectseat for when things get too risky.

I saw it here first (of course) but I removed the seat on my K7 from the hinge side. I'm going from memory but I think the hinges are held in place with a cotter pin. It took me some finagling but I was able to get needlenose pliers up there and pull the pin, then slid the hinge out.

Haha yeah.  The thing weights an absolute ton.  There would be no way to right the ship if it started to lean.  Eject button all the way.

Yeah, there's no need to destroy anything to get the seat lock "unlocked".  It is just a spring-loaded catch that pops out and catches onto the (also spring-loaded) pin attached to the seat.  Some manipulation (tickling haha) should enable you to unlock it, remove the lock, and maybe take the lock to a locksmith who can make you a key, if all else fails.

Yeah thats how it was on my other K8 that had a stock seat, but this monster has a king and queen aftermarket.  I have no idea how it is attached and there really is a birds/squirrels nest right under the seat where the battery should be.  I can't see anything.  I am also slightly scared of what i might find in there.....did i mention it smells like a urinal?   haha

I guess i should probably try to clean that out and look around before i start hammering things.  Thanks

oops, missed the pic of the second compressor...

the lock still has pins (or at least they came that way), and unless your trying to pick it (which would be fairly easy as its only 4 or 5 pins) it would be pure luck to get the pins to line up with a screwdriver. not saying it impossible but... if it was that easy who would need a key, just break out the leatherman.

Nope, I'm not saying to pick the lock at all.  I'm saying that the latch is nothing but a spring-loaded bit that can be pushed back with a screwdriver or some other sort of twisted wire, etc.  We're not talking about Fort Knox here, just a simple latching mechanism.  It might be easier to get at it if the seat hinges are removed first so the seat can be moved around.  For that matter, it might be possible to get a wrench in there to undo the nuts that hold the latch in place.

As for having keys made, I've seen locksmiths do it on the spot at the auto impound lot in maybe 30 seconds, tops.

ha-ha,

reminds me of a clapped out h-d rat/bagger that had triple air horns from a freight train mounted onto the front fender.  was at americade a few years ago parked on main st in front of a decked bar.  deck was jammed, and owner would wait until some noob would walk up and admire the horns.  would usually blow his hat off when horns were tripped by remote control.  much laughter and back-slapping, then waiting for the next curious foole. ;D
