Stuck Axle nut
« on: February 24, 2010, 02:49:15 PM »
I am a new rider and just bought a 77 cb750K for my first bike.  I need to get the axle off but the axle nut refuses to budge.  I took the wheel off, tried PB Blaster.  Tried heating it with a propane torch and nothing.  I do not have and impact gun so that option is out.  I am completely out of ideas.  Anyone have any other ideas?  ???

You just need a bigger lever. If you don't care about the butt end of the axle, use a big a-- pipewrench on it. Block it somehow. Get a big pipe on the breaker bar you are using on the nut.

If you do care about the butt end, stick something in the hole, but it will probably bend.

I think...no, it's just too easy.  I'm not gonna say anything on this one.   :-*

you DID take the cotter pin out right?

I think that year has hex both ends,,

Get a proper fitting socket and try a  good hard pull with a long breaker bar.. If that doesnt work, I would grind it carefully and break nut.. mainly cuz if its seized or stuck, it will kill the axle threads forcing it off..

But there may be some part of it left in one of the holes. That is, if you have a castle nut.

If it is anything like my 350F front axle, then you will need an impact gun.  No other way around it.  I bent some very stiff things (<drum roll> and I didn't use my butt end) before I put an impact gun on there.  Go to a local shop if you don't have an impact gun.  Whatever they charge will be easier than the cutting, grinding, cussing, and new parts purchase that you are on track for.

I've been watching this but I'm a little confused.  To get the wheel off wouldn't you have loosened the axle nut?  If it was loose to some point and then stopped, the threads are probably bunged up on the end.  You could try turning it on and then dressing up the threads with a triangular file.  Unless I'm not understanding what's going on here.

Good points. Howd he get the wheel off without loosening the nut?

Not sure on the 77 but on 76 and earlier you can remove the back wheel by pushing, lowering down the chain adjusters and then removing the two metal blocks on the end of the swingarm and slide the axle/wheel out. If you have stock exhaust that is the procedure.

That sounds similar to what I know about, K2 and earlier, but don't you still have to relieve the pinching effect of the axle by loosening the nut a tad?

Dang, another good point! The front wheel will come off without loosening the nut.

Ta da! OP says there was no cotter pin, hence, front wheel.

My suggestion still stands, bigger lever. Set the wheel up on a vice if possible, clamp the butt end in the vice with a short rod thru the hole, and get a 3+ft piece of pipe (cheater bar) for the breaker bar.

Sorry guys, yes it is the front wheel.  I will probably just wait for my buddy to come over some time with his impact gun or just say screw it and take it to a shop.
