Did you do a control test with just simple green and water, but no ultrasonic cleaner?  It would be nice to see the difference that the ultrasonic cleaner makes over just immersion in cleaner.

which cleaner do you have?  i have the bigger one with the heater and timer.  i can't wait to try it out, i've just been too busy with other stuff lately so i haven't had a chance...  but either way, looks GOOD!!  i'm thinking with some soda blasting and the ultrasonic clean, i'll have a nice set of really clean carbs in no time!!

I am the one who originally tried Simple Green and posted the results here. I am looking at your pics. I would suggest you just use SG out of the bottle, let it really dissolve the varnish for hour or so and then use the Ultrasound. Ultrasound is awesome for cleaning carbs, really gets into everything and scubs.

No I have not I did not have a machine. It was cold as hell and I wanted to clean some carbs. The old lady would have killed me if I stunk up the basement with Gumout. I tried every solvent and cleaner I had in the house. Finally I just threw the bowls in a Chinese soup container with 100% Simple Green. I got distracted and came back less than two hours later and they were clean.

If you have a machine and a soda blaster, man, you can make some good looking and running carbs.

that's what i'm hoping for!!  the blasting cabinet to get all the big gunk off, then the cleaner to get everything else!  even the soda stuck in the threads!!  another nice thing about the cleaner is you can use pure water for more delicate parts, or a slight mix of SG and water for things like float bowls and rubber parts!  i can't wait to start working on stuff again!!

The SG unmixed should not hurt rubber, and you can re use it. You can use the water to remove the soda residue.

Thanks BobbyR,the soak in SG sounds like an excellent primer to the ultrasonic,I will take that route next time,(I have 22 carbs to go including spares :o) CHEERS

can you put two carbs in the 2.5L ultrasonic  cleaner at the same time? I'm thinking about buying one, maybe the same one as your or the 6.0 L.

The Yamahaha carb stuck out 1/3 and had to be rotated as they are kinda plump.I will report back if i can stuff 2 Keihin's in as soon as my J.I.S. driver bits arrive.

Hello pz1morton,I picked up the ultrasonic @ Harbor Freight which you can order on line for $79 smackers,Amazon.com has a gallon of the Simple green all purpose degreaser for $10,which is a buck less than my neighborhood hardware. I am gonna try Bobbyr's suggestion of soaking in 100% SG for 1hour-ish and then in the ultrasonic with luke warm tap h2o + a cup or 2 of SG for 25 minutes or so, Cheers.

Just got my new HF flyer.  It's on sale again at $59 till March 25.  Check out Motorcyclist and other bike mags and you should be able to find a 20-25% off coupon.  20% off makes it $47.  That's a good deal right there!!!

I've had the cheap $30 HF ultrasonic cleaner for about 2 years and I am very impressed with it. You guys have me thinking about buying the bigger one.

One tip - DON'T PUT METAL FLOAT BOWLS IN THE ULTRASONIC CLEANER - it loosens the solder joints and causes them to leak

Soak the Bowls in simple green then polish. Eats up all the crap.

i threw some carbs in there last night for the hell of it.  didn't touch either one with anything other than the solution (1:5 simple green and water).  this bad boy is NICE!!!  i threw the heater on and it got nice and toasty in there, probably 120-130 F.  either way, this is what it has the capabilities of doing by itself with NO PRESOAK!!
